9-11 Tribute Run at Holmdel Park

In conjunction with our regular Wednesday evening Club Run at Holmdel Park, we would like to invite any and all interested runners to join us this week for a low-key tribute to the victims and rescue workers involved in the 9/11 tragedy. We will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a moment of silence, followed by our normal five (5) mile tour of the park. We would encourage all participants to wear red, white and blue and/or carry a flag while we run, so that we can display our patriotism and remember all the victims of last year's tragedy. Perhaps we can get some of our vocally talented fellow members to lead us in a rendition of "God Bless America" before our run begins. Just as a reminder, we meet near the main pavilion in Holmdel Park at 5:45PM so that we are ready to start at 6:00PM. Other details can be found on the Group Run page of the web site.

"Let Freedom Run" Race

Dear JSRCers,

I'm trying to get some club interest up in a 4 miler to be held September 14th, 9:00 AM in New York City. Check out the Race Calendar for all the details. The course will go past the site of the WTC and end in Battery Park. I was hoping we could get a good JSRC turnout (a sea of safety orange), and take the train up, ala NYC Marathon. This will be a memorial/tribute to the almost 3000 INNOCENT PEOPLE MURDERED last September. Anyone free the 14th? Thanks! Barbara Brennan (babsrunr2@aol.com)

NYC Marathon Bus

Anyone who is planning on doing the NYC Marathon should be planning on their transportation. The Central Jersey Road Runners Club offers convenient Bus transportation to the start in Staten Island and return from the finish in Central Park. They have a meeting place in a building directly across from the finish and serve refreshments and other amenities. Its just about the most convenient way to go. The busses leave from Cranford just a few minutes off the Garden State Parkway. To get further information visit the CJRRC Web Site. It is suggested that you sign up soon as the buses generally fill up fast.

Marathon Training Programs

If you are doing NYC or any Fall Marathon an excellent way to get ready is with a group. The Club has several options available for training. All paces and abilities (from sub 3 hours to 5 hours plus) are represented so you will always find a group to run with on those long runs. There are plenty of water stops and great refreshments at the end. If it is your first marathon you can pick up some excellent pointers along the way. Why not give it a try this Sunday? Get more information on the Marathon Training Page. Also - if you are doing a Fall Marathon consider getting one of the Club's distinctive Orange Singlets - it is a great way to stand out in a crowd so friends and relatives can find you. Get info at the JSRC Gear Page.

Youth Cross Country Series

The Shore AC has announced their Fall Youth (14 and Under) running program at Holmdel Park starting on September 1st. It is an excellent program. Get information on the Kids Running Page.

Club Teams Excel in the Big Apple

JSRC Men's Veterans take 2nd in NYRR Club Championships

Our Vets did it! We accomplished what we wanted despite being challenged by injuries, heat , and humidity. Running through the "soup" masquerading as air in Central Park for 5 miles, the Vets team took second place overall (unofficially) and moved into second place overall...nudging GNY into 3rd place. We also widened our lead over the fourth place team (SIAC). Overall, Taconic Road Runners, the perennial champ, remains in 1st with 121 points, we are 2nd with 91, GNY is 3rd with 89 and SIAC is 4th with 75. Remainder of the field is too far back to worry about. Remember this is our first year of racing as a JSRC Team. We now need to lock in the award by fielding teams for the remaining 4 races! Our top finishers were: Bill Scholl(29:50), Tom Hall(30:06), John Shavel(31:38), Dave Sauls(32:40), Russ Stallone(34:14), and Mike Anstadt(34:40). They were backed up by Jack Cheer, Jerry Convery, Bill Dunn, and Ron Cohen. JSRC Masters Hold 2nd Place.

The news on the masters front. Unfortunately we lost our frontrunner Bob Bythell to injury and, hopefully, it's nothing serious and he'll be back healthy soon.(We need him for the upcoming 5k!) But, we still managed a fourth place finish! With double points, we did not lose ground to anyone. Central Park TC remains in 1st with 126 points.(another perenial champ) We are second with 95. West Side Runners (WSX) sneaks into 3rd overall with their first place finish and now has 68 points. Staten Island drops to fourth place overall with 60. So, bottom line, we retain our 27 point lead over the (new) third place team!!!! Well positioned with four races to go!!! Our top scorers were: Mike Mooney(28:29), Bill Scholl(29:50), Tom Hall(30:06), Cliff Russell(30:22), and John Schavel(31:38). They were backed up by Jeff Neis and Tom Mulvaney. Overall, great effort by everyone in VERY trying conditions!!! We should all be proud! NEXT RACE SEPTEMBER 22ND - XC in Van Cortlandt Park. Let's put it on ice, so we can make reservations for the NYRR Awards Banquet!

Broadway Classic

My name is Joe Mirarchi, and I am appealing to all the runners that I have met at various races and events I have participated in over the last five years. As a member of the Long Branch Volunteer Fire Department for over thirty-two years, I have witnessed the destruction of property and injuries to human lives. In January of this year, the fire department witnessed the life of one of their firefighters taken at a fire scene. Robert Feeney, a firefighter with the "Phil Daly Hose Co.", collapsed while operating an engine and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Bob leaves a wife, plus four children of school age, and a "Children of Bob Feeney Education Fund " was developed and being handled by the "Phil Daly Hose Company" of the fire department. As one of the co-chairs of the "Broadway Classic 5k Race" on September 28, the committee decided this years proceeds from the race will go directly to support this education fund for Bob's children. I have been working on sponsors to cover the expense of this race, so I ask all my fellow runners to PLEASE participate in this great cause, as each entrance fee will go directly to the fund Thank you!
