Brodsky a Survivor Jonathan Brodsky and Chris Frey traveled to upstate New York in late July to take part in the escarpment trail race. The race, which is 18.6 miles from Windham to Hunter Mountain, is considered to be one of the most rugged short course trail races in the east. It contains over 5000 feet of major climb and descent in addition to other short climbs. One section, which climbs over 1000 feet in less than 1 mile, can better be described as rock climbing than running. There is minimal aid and the runners must carry their own supplies. As an added degree of difficulty, the runners encoutered humid and rainy conditions for the duration of the race making the course treacherous on the slippery rocks. Virtually none of the over 200 competitors finnished without at least one fall and some drawn blood. Despite these conditions, everybody enjoyed the race. If you can qualify (you need to have done a 3:45 or better marathon or have completed any of the major trail 100 mile races within the previous year), it is an adventure not to be missed. As a related note, Chris had qualified many times but most recently he had completed the Vermont 100 in under 24 hours only a few weeks earlier. The pictures depicts an easy part of the course. His next race is the+Garden State 50K/50M on Sept 17 in Manasquan Reservoir.

One of the most spectacular and scenic Marathons is Big Sur held in April. Dawn Ciccone is in the process of organizing a trip. Contact her to express an interest or help with the organizing. You don't have to run the marathon - the trip will be worth it.
The Bradley Beach Race held this past Saturday is turning into one of the larger Jersey Shore Races. With a field of about 500 runners the sun shined brightly for the runners at the start. Cool ocean breezes made for a pleasant run along the beautiful ocean side run which was spectator friendly with the runners passing by the start midway through the course. Motivational music was blaring on the course and got the runners going and there were plenty of awards in all major age groups.. Complete results will be posted here soon. The Men's and Women's winners (husband and wife) are shown here on the left and right respectively. Congratulations to Rich Held and the entire Staff of Volunteers who put on a terrific event. The Race was a prelude to the big Belmar 5 Race to be held this coming Saturday, August 26th. Registration will be open all week long starting at 6 PM at Taylor Pavilion on the Boardwalk in Belmar. Get more information from the official Belmar 5 Web Site.
