They
say time passes quickly when you are older and I can testify that this is
definitely true. Sixteen years ago
I was 44 years old. After being a runner for seventeen years, I was planning to
run my first marathon. My nephew
(unofficially as the son of old friends), Russell, was four and that same year
we started his “running career” at the Shore Athletic Club’s Lake
Takanassee Summer Series race for children (photo on the left).
During rides to and from the race we had talks about how we were 40 years
and 4 days apart, both celebrating our birthdays in October. He expressed interest in my marathon training.
How many times around Lake Tak would equal the marathon’s 26.2 miles?
Don’t you get hungry? What
if you have to go to the bathroom? His
interest and curiosity were so great that we made a pact – When he was 20 and
I was 60 we would run the New York City Marathon together.
Well,
the time has passed and in 2007 on October 12th Russell will be 20
and “old” Aunt Liz will be 60 on October 8th. (see photo above on
the right) In the intervening years
Russell was a regular at the Lake Tak series and went on to run track and cross
country for Red Bank Regional High School.
He was a member of the first place NJ State Indoor four x four hundred
relay team in 2004. Now in his
sophomore year at Wake Forest University, Russell is still running regularly and
anxious for us to uphold our pact. I’ve
kept up my running with a lot of help from my friends in the Jersey Shore
Running Club (JSRC). The long
training runs at the regular JSRC Sunday group runs out of Bodman Park in
Middletown, have kept me ready to run my next marathon.
I have completed thirty or so marathons, including that first Marine
Corps, Boston, New York, and Venice. Despite the fact that I am very much older
and slower, I am still ready to uphold my part of the agreement.
So on Sunday November 4th Russell and I will run the ING New
York City Marathon. He will
definitely have to wait for me at the finish, but I plan to make a good showing
and celebrate with pizza from Val’s tavern.

A
beautiful morning for the runners at the 25th Annual Run Thru Deal Race.
The race included a preliminary 1 mile race and then featured the 5 mile race

Casino on the Ocean.

Stephanie was last year's JSRC Triple Crown Winner and she is off to a fast start this year. Holding the finish tape were Tom Morrison and Mary Moriarty.

Volunteers are welcome to assist with Bag Stuffing for the Trick or trot Race. We will start the stuffing at the Windmill across the street from Seven President's Park after our regular Tuesday night run on October 23rd. Be there by 7 PM.
Runners were "treated" to a challenging course (was that 3 -5 miles?) at the annual Rat Race. The runners were transported from Shark River Park to some Industrial Park several miles away and made their way through trails and muck and mud, under the Garden State parkway via some unmarked tunnels, along a stream and had to forge a running stream to get to the finish. The first finisher was Bob Horn who completed the advertised 3 - 5 mile course in about 2 hours. Runners were drizzling in after 3 or so hours. (Was a long 3 - 5 miles). After the run everyone made it back to Bar Anticipation for the traditional post race party. The course was not certified.
The JSRC will again be at the Finish Line of the NYC Marathon as we have been for the past several years. Our assignment is to handle the "Celebrity Finish Area". We take care of the celebrities, their family and friends after they finish.
In past year's Lance Armstrong, P Diddy, William Baldwin, David Lee Roth, Football great Lynn Swann, NY Ranger Hockey Player Mike Richter, Model Kim Alexis, Tennis great Yannick Noah, "Sting's" son, several Governors and others have come through the celebrity area. Mayor's Guiliani and Bloomberg generally stop by to congratulate everyone as well. Watch this web site for information on some of the celebrities scheduled to run this year. Some of the celebrities you would not recognize in their running gear.
We still have some openings for volunteers for this year. We will have a bus available which will take the volunteers directly to Central Park and bring you back. All volunteers will get refreshments on the bus, at the Marathon and on the return. Cost of the bus will be a nominal $5 to $10 to defray the cost of the bus. Volunteers will also receive as we have in the past NYC Marathon gear such as a windbreaker or Rain Jacket and Official NYC Marathon T-Shirt as well as all the autographs that you ca get.
Te bus for the volunteers will leave from the commuter parking lot of the Red Bank Exit of the Garden State Parkway Commuter Parking Lot at about 8 AM and if necessary make a stop at the Cheesequake Service Area. We should return by about 6 PM.
Its a fun day in NYC.
