The 12th annual Little Silver Classic 5K was a host event for 238 road racers on a weather-perfect Sunday morning of September 25 and like its neighboring town of Rumson which presents the Rumson Run Five Miler in early May, has the local high school for its staging area. Little Silver has Red Bank Regional and Rumson has Rumson-Fair Haven Regional. Both events start their races on roads adjacent to the schools, meander through traffic-protected scenic streets, and finish on the schools tracks.
Another thing in common this year is the winner: Rob DeFilippis, Neptune, boys head track coach of Red Bank Catholic High School won on Sunday at 15:35 (15 minutes and 35 seconds) and he won Rumsonâs 5 miler at 25:24. His goal at Rumson was to cross the finish line under a 5-minte mile pace â€" he didn t make it. He tried again at the Spring Lake Five on Memorial Day weekend and at this annual event, which boasts of being the largest race in New Jersey, he also missed but was faster at 25:13 (4th place overall), missing his goal by 14 seconds.
Sundays goal was to get in under 15 minutes he didnt make it. And if he were still looking to beat a 5-minute mile he still missed but not by much. His pace time at Little Silver was 5:01 that pretty close! He didnt appear to be disappointed though and his $100 money prize might have soothed any negative feelings.
Coming in runner-up position was Jeremy Stratton of Parlin at 16:34 and third was Fort Monmouth Daniel Gundersen at 16:53, each receiving $50 and $25 respectively.
Top three women finishers that received the same money prizes went to: Megan Philips of Brielle at 19:06 (11th place overall), hometown Kristy Niro at 20:26 (19th overall) and Sandy Santigo 20:28 of Eatontown (20th overall)
Among he Club Finishers were:
