The rain did not dampen the spirit of all the teams which competed in the first Annual Relay by the Sea held at the Sea Girt National Guard Training Center. The first finisher was Joe Donahue of Point Pleasant who completed the 15K course ahead of some pretty strong teams. The first Men's team was a team led by Gary Krebs backed up with Jeremy and Kevin Gaine. The first women's team was the two some of Karen Charles and Adele McDonough. Adele was also the first individual women as she competed in two categories - as befitting a JSRC Prsident. The first Mixed Open team was Two Runners and a Slow Guy - the slow guy was also slow in coming up for his award. Other category winners as well as complete results will soon be posted - as son as we can dry out the finisher's cards. Runner's were treated to a great post race barbecue courtesy of the Monmouth Ocean County Elks Handicapped Children's Committee. Special thanks to all the Boy Scouts and Ocean Township High School led by Brian Washkowski who were responsible for course marshalling the course and the Girl Scouts who braved the rain to hand out lots of water.

In a truly emotional event on the evening of Thursday, September 11th, Tim Mahoney of Belmar led 150 plus runners from the Jersey Shore Running Club in a Memorial Run down the boardwalks of Belmar, Spring Lake and Sea Girt. The run was to memorialize all those lost from the area on that tragic day just two years ago.
Mahoney who is a New Jersey State Trooper addressed the runners at the start and said "What tonight is all about is run, remember, reflect and resume". He asked all the participants to not talk during the "run" in order to "remember" and "reflect" on the 9-11 tragedy and all those who were lost. The runners then commenced with the reading of the first group of victims from the area lost on 9-11 at the start on the Boardwalk in Belmar. All the participants had a chance to read the name of one of the 145 victims.
In a solemn run down to the memorial in Spring Lake the runners did not talk and kept a silent vigil in memory of all those fallen. They then stopped at the Spring Lake Memorial and another group of names were read. The only sound was the reading of the names and the gentle ocean breeze.
After leaving flowers and flags at the Memorial, Mahoney led the runners in one big group on a solemn run again in stark silence down the Spring Lake Boardwalk and to the Memorial on the Beach in Sea Girt. At the Memorial in sand on the beach the runners took turns reading the final group of names and tears could be seen on the faces of many of the participants.
The runners then one by one placed the remaining flowers and flags around the Memorial. After a few words of thanks and encouragement and hope the runners "resumed" their lives and raced back to the start in Belmar. It was truly a unique and special event.
