Airline Relay

Some pilots have come up with an idea that has taken on a life of its own; an employee run between Boston and Los Angeles carrying the Stars and Stripes as a show of American resolve, and in support of the rescue cleanup of the aftermath of September 11. The run will be a 31 day relay style run, 24 hours a day being run by the employees of American Airlines and United Airlines, passing the Flag from employee to employee. I am helping out Mike Burr on this project. It's in the ground floor stage, but will move rather rapidly as the run is planned to begin in Boston on October 11 (marking one month after the tragedy, and will proceed through NYC, Washington, D.C., down the East Coast through Dallas, Ft. Worth and arriving in Los Angeles on November 11 (Veterans Day). Proceeds will benefit all the victims of the tragedy. What I need (and QUICKLY) are some volunteers along the way. I'm finishing the route plan stages, others are getting us sponsers, and the national PR thing is just starting. Besides volunteers for the actual run,(the more the merrier, more bodies equals less miles each) I also desperately need some bodies for some of the admin/logistics in each state. If you can help out Email me: Lacorteft@aol.com. Thanks Frank LaCorte -->

NYC Marathon Volunteers

The Club will again be helping out at the Finish Line of the NYC Marathon. Due to security requirements we must provide names to the New York Road Runners Club well in advance. This will certainly be a very memorable event. The number of volunteer slots is limited. First priority will go to those who volunteered last year and after that on a first come first served basis. If interested please contact Phil Hinck at 732-571-2162 or email him at phinck@home.com.

Jersey Shore Half Marathon Volunteers

We will be helping out Shore AC at their Half Marathon on October 7th at Sandy Hook. We will be working the finish line and other assorted duties. This is one of the long standing and premier events at the Shore. If you are not running and would like to help out contact Phil Hinck at 732-571-2162 or send an email to him at phinck@home.com.

Seaside Half Marathon Volunteers

Cross Country Series Starts

All Welcome to be on a Team and Support the JSRC

The club placed 5th at the first race of the 2001 Shore AC fall cross country series held in Thompson Park. It looks like those group runs at Holmdel Park paid off for us. We narrowly missed catching the host team, Shore AC, which was made of mostly of JSRC members "bribed" to run for the Shore AC. The winning team was HoHa (Hoboken Harriers). Surprisingly, Sabrina and Joan were not there with HoHa!

The series continues every Saturday through November 3. Next week's race is at Tatum Park in Middletown, starting at 9 AM. If you would like to run for the JSRC team, please contact Dave Zurheide at DRZurheide@aol.com) We welcome all runners regardless of your pace. Team size is unlimited. But we would sure like to have a few of you who can still run 17:00 for a 5K join us.

SHORE AC CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE

RACE #1 - THOMPSON PARK - 9/29

(approx. 3.2 miles)

Dave Zurheide

Many thanks to the devoted club members who turned out at Thompson Park to help us finish a respectable fifth place as a team, only 10 points behind the Shore AC. Our own 24 year old Jeff Logarzo led the charge with his impressive fifth place overall finish, beating out many seasoned cross country veterans. With a few more of our top runners, I am convinced that we "could have been a contender." Under the Shore AC's convoluted scoring system we had all components covered - open, female and masters. We even were credited with bonus points for our second woman, and for 50+ and 60+ (thank you Jim Sullivan) runners.

For those of you that missed the race, Thompson Park was a spectacular setting for the event. The course was challenging and interesting. It included some sandy sections, many rolling mowed fields, a few winding turns through the woods, and a beautiful lake alongside. All of this took place in a remote portion of the park that most visitors do not usually see.

X-Country Teams

Support Your Club - Get on a Team Now

We have some runners committed to the SAC X-Country Series but could use more to succeed as a team. The key to a good showing is a diverse group, including a few of our topnotch runners. I have contacted some directly, but as a fairly new guy to the club, I do not know most of the membership. In addition to top notch runners we also could use masters and especially women runners as often the team that wins is the team which can fill all the required slots. You don't need to be fast to be on a team - all are welcome. Consistency is often more important than speed.

Holmdel Group Run Update

Due to the arrival of autumn and progressively earlier sunsets, this coming Wednesday, Sept 26, we need to start running by 6PM sharp. Holmdel Park will be closing at 7 PM. Starting Wed, Oct 3, we will start our group run at 5:30 PM. I anticipate that we will have to suspend our Holmdel Park runs after the Oct 17 run. Of course we will commence these again in April. We are also investigating a winter course on the roads in the Holmdel area. If anyone has an idea for a safe course with convenient parking and a bathroom available, please contact John

Bayshore Thanks

Thanks Bayshore Classic Volunteers On behalf of the Bayshore Community Hospital, I thank all of the many JSRC members who came out and volunteered to make the 2001 Bayshore Classic successful. Despite the tramatic events of the week, we had the best registration in over 6 years for the event. Thanks for showing that JSRC is a great club that strives to help the community in many ways. As a retired career firefighter, and a volunteer firefighter in the City of long Branch since 1969, my concentration during the "Long Branch Classic 5k race" was saying prayers for all the brother firefighters who lives were taken. We have never in the history of firefighting experienced this enormity of lost brothers, and the impact will always effect all involved in this great profession. The positive that has been brought to light; and I feel our citizens really didn't know what we were all about, is that when everyone is running out , we are running in to help, and when you think about it, that's what we are all about, helping others!

-----------------------------------------------------

In light of the recent world tragedy, and I say "world," because it has affected each and everyone person on a global magnitude, I too had to consider the fact that running, at that time seemed frivolous, selfish...I decided to try it and see how it felt.

I ran because it was a release of my grief...a celebration of my survival and freedom of a life that I too often take for granted. In light of all of this, things that are really important in life have overshadowed those superficial things I use to think were important - and running is one of the important ones - it is a release, an statement of gratitude for the healthy body God has given us. I for one will be running NY in all my stars and stripes!

ON MONDAY - there were people fighting against praying in schools.

ON TUESDAY = you would have been hard pressed to find a school

where someone was not praying.

ON MONDAY - there were people trying to separate each other by

race, sex, color, and creed.

ON TUESDAY - they were all holding hands.

ON MONDAY- we thought that we were secure.

ON TUESDAY - we learned better.

ON MONDAY - we were talking about heroes as being athletes.

ON TUESDAY- we relearned what hero meant.

ON MONDAY - people went to work at the World Trade Centers

as usual.

ON TUESDAY - they died.

ON MONDAY - people were fighting the 10 commandments on

government property.

ON TUESDAY - the same people all said "God help us all"

while thinking "Thou shall not kill."

ON MONDAY - people argued with their kids about picking up their room.

ON TUESDAY - the same people could not get home fast enough to hug

their kids.

ON MONDAY - people picked up McDonalds for dinner.

ON TUESDAY - they stayed home.

ON MONDAY - people were upset that their dry cleaning was

not ready on time.

ON TUESDAY - they were lining up to give blood for the dying.

ON MONDAY - politicians argued about budget surpluses.

ON TUESDAY - grief stricken they sang "God Bless America."

ON MONDAY - we worried about the traffic and getting to work late.

ON TUESDAY = we worried about a plane crashing into your house or

place of business.

ON MONDAY - we were irritated that our rebate checks had

not arrived.

ON TUESDAY - we saw people celebrating people dying in the USA.

ON MONDAY - some children had solid families.

ON TUESDAY - they were orphans.

ON MONDAY - the president was going to Florida to read to children.

ON TUESDAY - he returned to Washington to protect our children.

ON MONDAY - we e-mailed jokes.

ON TUESDAY - we did not.

It is sadly ironic how it takes horrific events to place

things into perspective, but it has. The lessons learned

this week, the things we have taken for granted, the

things that have been forgotten or overlooked, hopefully

will never be forgotten again.

On MONDAY - pray and be thankful.

On TUESDAY - pray and be thankful.

On WEDNESDAY - pray and be thankful.

On THURSDAY - pray and be thankful.

On FRIDAY - pray and be thankful.

On SATURDAY - pray and be thankful.

On SUNDAY - pray and be thankful.

Way back in late winter, early spring I became intrigued with the idea of doing Mountain Masochist in October. I'd heard a lot about David Horton's races, and I thought it would be a great way to wrap up the ultra racing season. But after getting the crap kicked out of me in Vermont, I started to think that maybe a nice flat marathon would be an easier effort for the fall. I amped up my fast training a little, and started getting pumped to run a PR. Chris did Atlantic City last year, and he liked it because it's close, so I signed on. But everything changed last week. This attack was like a knee to the stomach...it knocked the wind out of me. I was in a fog for days. And because I have a family member who was so closely touched by this tragedy, it made my training seem rather unimportant. I ran early Tuesday morning with Chris and the girls, and didn't go out again until Friday, and that was a pretty uninspiring workout. But after running around in Allaire all weekend, helping set up for Garden State, I realized that what is important to me right now is not a marathon PR, but to be in the woods doing something I love with people I love. So I'm going. (Wanna' come?) Atlantic City may be a fast course, and convenient, but it's not the Blue Ridge Mountains in the fall, with 200 other crazies and 50 miles of killer hills. I hate to sound maudlin, but I just feel like if I don't do this now, when I'm in really good shape, I may never have the chance again. So, I guess, if anything positive is to come from this senseless act, hopefully it will be a renewed sense of urgency to enjoy and appreciative the incredible gift that is my life. Peace everybody. I love you all.

I also ran the Philadelphia Distance Run. Originally, I was not going to because of the horror of the week and because of the overwhelming grief and sorrow for my brother, Michael, and his wife, Natalie. My brother was missing for a good while on Tuesday; he works just a few blocks from the World Trade Center. When he finally called, it was such a joy and relief to us all. Only our relief was short lived. We found out that Natalie's brother, Tommy McCann, was one of the missing NYC fire fighters. My heart is broken - I think of my nephew and that he might never get to know his uncle.....I can't bring myself to giving up hope.

But I did run the PDR - wearing a singlet on the back of which was written "In Honor - Tommy McCann, NYC Firefighter, Sept. 11, 2001"

I can't tell you how many runners said to me "God bless Tommy McCann." And I do believe he is blessed - if God has taken him home. But we are blessed also - for having among us so many brave and compassionate men and women. And I commute into the city now knowing it is not the same city as it was a week ago - it is a much stronger one.

------------------------------------------------------

There is good reason we call ourselves the land of the free and the home of the brave. Each of us has the right to follow our dreams where they may lead. Every human born in or welcomed to this country by our promise of freedom can do as they choose. My friends don and Jean Peterson lived this good life. They raised a large family, helped in local charities, led productive careers, worked in the church of their choice and were fellow runners. My business helped them relocate when they moved to Spring Lake in the late 80s. They immediately became good neighbors and friends with all the people they met. They started using the boardwalk every day and soon were asking about the local races. During the summer of 1994 they trained for and completed the Sea Girt 5k. I saw them finish that day, toghether near the back of the pack but happy with a good effort. I would occasionally see them at races thereafter enjoying the experience. Now they are gone. No one will ever know what happened before that crash near pittsburg in which they perished, but the consensus is that the passengers of that flight went down fighting. I saw the Petersons fighting spirit as they trained for that first race. I know in my heart that they lived the words we hear all the time, 'land of the free, home of the brave,' heres to lives well lived and a farewell to fellow runners..

---------------------------------------------------------

Just wanted to give you the results from Colts Neck. There was a solemn demeanor over runners that would ordinarily be festive and loud, but we all needed the release and the distraction if even for a brief time. Following a moment odd silence, the race began on a beautiful, yet sad day.

---------------------------------------------------------

Today is a day of "mourning". The losses are so great and has affected everyone of us. I too pray for those who have lost a loved one or are still waiting to hear some news.

-------------------------------------------------------

Just wanting all of my American cousins and friends to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time of terror.I can not imagine how the family of the affected are coping with this! I just want all of you to know that here in Montreal and the rest of Canada is in complete shock and sadness over this! I work in a high rise and my company closed down today due to the shock and sadness. One of my coworkers knew people who worked in the trade center but at this time everyone is ok.I pray that you all are not directly affected by this and your family and friends are safe and sound at this time. God Bless, Love and Prayers

---------------------------------------------------------

There is little doubt we all are feeling the same emotional war going on inside. On the one hand, we want to hit someone, but we don't know who. On the other hand, we want to cry out loud. We should allow ourselves to grieve. If you want to cry, please do. If you want to scream, feel free to let it out.

I run with the Sneaker Factory on Tuesday evenings out of Morristown High School. This past Tuesday, a handful of solemn souls showed up. They decided to do a light workout on the track. I couldn't. I needed to run hard. I ran the hills behind Morristown court house alone and, as I climbed up Skyline Drive, I glanced to my left. There, where the top half of the twin towers used to wink at me, was a cloud of smoke. Just a flat horizon and a cloud of smoke. Volumes were spoken by what wasn't there. I stopped. I wept. I began to crunch out the remaining miles.

As I later cut through a park path, a young couple was there with their young son. The boy was about three years old and was playing energetically. The father stood there staring at him. The young mother was sitting on a bench and looking down. As I passed, she looked up and gave me a weak smile. I gave her a nod and a slight wave and kept running. In hindsight, I wanted to stop and hug her. I wanted to tell her not to worry.

We will survive. We will stand up and join hands and be stronger than ever. We will make this world a better place for her young son. That is true, my friends. We will survive this horror. We will come back stronger than ever. But we will never forget the images that have been burned into our memories. As a matter of fact, we shouldn't. As in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, the sleeping dragon has been awakened. We were fat. We were complacent. We are now awake and alert. They tried to knock us down. But instead we stood up. May God bless each of you and your families. The positive drawn from this nightmare is we are now given the opportunity to reset our value systems and appreciate what is truly important in this life.

Go hug your loved ones and Pray for those who can no longer. Go for a long, hard run and let your tears get lost in your sweat. But never forget. My God, teach me how to forgive. I don't think I can do it alone.
