Rat Race Rocks

Club Members Posing with "The Big Rat" Before The Race

The second Annual "Rat Race" was held at Camp Zehnder in Wall Township on a beautiful sunny day. A very unique event with very unique participants. Running through a course set by Carlos Morillo and marked with flour along the way, the runners had to navigate through challenging terrain to include briars, thorns and other obstacles. The finish was just as unique with finishers coming across the finish line from three directions. Apparently each group took a different course. Jack Cheer shown in the accompanying photo was the winner and was congratulated by Race Director Bill Scholl at the finish line. Jack is the two time champion, as he also won last years event. Most everyone made it to the finish.

The JSRC Camaraderie

Dawn Ciccone

There are so many joys in running: the fresh air brushing your face, the warm sunshine hugging your shoulders, and the exhilaration you feel when you push pass the finish line. I never take these things for granted, because, as runners, we all know that it can be taken away with one wrong twist of the body.

I have been blessed with two PR's in one week, the Jersey Shore Half and The Deal 5 Miler. What I find most motivating and valuable at all the races is the camaraderie of our club. We are a team supporting those ahead of us as well as behind us, and even those on the sidelines. It is the JSRC that makes running not just a sport, but also a family of friends. Just thought it would be nice to acknowledge us and say thanks!

Sunday Runs are Going Strong.

Since January 2000 a lot of folks have passed the 100 mile and 500 mile goals to receive their JSRC 100 Mile patches and JSRC Gloves. Folks who achieved the 100 mile goal include: Diane Cheer, Jack Cheer, Randi Cohen, Dave DeMonico, Joanne Dreicer, Jane Erbe, Lori Ann Fugaro, Jack Giegerich, Joanne Osowski, Rene Stene and Jim Owen. Those who achieved the 500 mile goal include Charles Hayden, Susan Kofod,John MacGillivray, Debbie McNish and Peter Sabat. Although we don't have a token official recognition Marty Dugan, Raman Lakshmanan, Cliff Russell and Kathy Soto each have over 200 Sunday Runs (~ 2000 miles) to their credit! Bill Michalski, Larry Murphy and I each have over 300 Sunday Runs. Larry has the most runs with a total of 356 as of October 1st! I encourage all members to give the Sunday Runs a try. There are water stops (courtesy of Mike Anstadt, Pat Dorgan, Marty Dugan, and Bill Renna) good food and good company to get you through those long winter months of running. - Liz Ireland

I read that Dawn Ciccone and perhaps others will be running the Big Sur Marathon next April. I'm sure that anyone running there will have found the web site already, but there are some great photos from the last two years at www.bsim.org. If Dawn or anyone else wants to know details about the race, I'd be happy to share info since I ran it this past April. I've been running more than 17 years, and Big Sur was the greatest running experience of my life. I can't say enought about how phenomenal the race is. If anyone is interested in hearing more about it, please Email me and I will give you more information.

Marathon Training Update

UPDATE- Manasquan Reservoir Sunday Training Runs Start at 8 AM

Since we are getting close to M-day, I would like to set up a "Marathon Pace Run" at the Manasquan Reservoir so everybody can lock into their marathon pace. The logical date is Sunday, 10/08/00 at 8 am sharp. (The major conflict is the LBI 18 miler). The idea is to run 5 mile loops at your marathon pace, with 3 minutes breaks for fuel. I will try to have "pacers" for the main paces ie. 7:30, 8::00, 8:30, 9:00. (If you are faster than 7:30 pace, you don't need a pacer!) This worked pretty well last year, and is modeled after the NYRRC pace runs. Let me know by email if you can make it; and whether you can be a pacer. Thanks, Jerry

Garden State 50 Miler

Chris Frey

Congratulations to Robin Rossow for holding a great race is past weekend. Starting off with a pre race dinner to end all pre race dinners on Saturday night and finishing with a beautiful day on Sunday. The pre-race dinner had everything from grilled eggplant to a made to order pasta bar, Chicken in couscous and delicious curry meatballs.

I was running the 50 mile option along with club members Jon Brodsky and Johnny Rodriguez. We planned to run to the turn around in Manasquan in as close to 4 hours as we could. Our goal was to finish between 8:30 & 9:00 hours. We all met at the Manasquan Reservoir on Sunday morning at 6:00 and waited in the cold for the start. The thermometer in Jon's car read 47 at 5:45. Sue Foley was running the 50K and Jerry Convery was running 20 miles, although he could have just kept going and finished, he chose to just run 20.

The race started with a loop of the reservoir and out onto a local road that sent us to Allaire State park. In the park we did a loop of the orange trail. I usually run at Allaire on Sunday morning, so this was my home course, not to mention a beautiful 6.8 mile loop. If you don't run at Allaire, you don't know what you are missing out on. We came out of the trail and headed down Hospital road to the Edgar Felix bike path. The bike path is a bit boring at times, but we were able to see many of the 50K runner's on their way back and also pass some of the slower runners who were still on their way to the turn around. On the bike path Johnny and I split up from Jon and decided to push the pace a bit. We ran through Manasquan and around Stockton the lake near the Armory and headed toward the beach. During this section, we began to see the 50 mile leaders on their way back and took note of who we thought we could catch. We also figured out that we were running in the top 10 and that gave us both motivation to keep pushing the pace. We made it to the turnaround on the Manasquan boardwalk in 4:05. This was on target with our plans, now we started to think about how long we could hold our pace and see how many people we could catch. We ran back up the bike path and back into Allaire and were still feeling strong. Going into Allaire, someone at the aid station told us that we were running 7th & 8th and the next runner had about 5 minutes on us. We both decided to put the hammer down and see who we could catch on the trails.

We caught our first runner in about 10 minutes and caught 2 more before we got done with the loop. At this point Johnny was running like a man on a mission and I could not hold his pace. He took off and I hooked up with a great guy from PA named Pascal. We ran the rest of Allaire together and stayed with each other all the way back to the reservoir. At the reservoir, to finish, you run a clockwise loop that forces you to pass the finish line once before you actually finish. This stunk, there is nothing worse than crossing the finish line after running for 7 plus hours only to be told "one lap to go". I was on my own at this point and not more than a mile into the last loop I ran into Johnny who looked like he got rode hard and put away wet. I asked him if he needed anything and he just looked at me and said "go get 3rd." I didn't know if he was in fourth for sure, but it was almost over and I could smell the barn. I ran most of the loop and walked the hills (after 45 miles, there ARE HILLS at the reservoir. I remember all three!) I finally rounded the last turn and saw the finish line banner ..and the guy in 3rd. I couldn't catch him fast enough, but I finished in 8:21. a PR for me of 40 minutes. As a bonus I was first in my division (mens open). This only goes to show that there was soft field at the race. Johnny finished in 8:30, first 50 & PR. Jon finished in 9:19 (PR also). Sue Foley ran the 50K, her first and finished 2 overall in the women's Masters Div.

A note worth mentioning, during the run and starting at about mile 8, we were trading places with Annette Henry, from Toms River. She was recently featured in the local paper while training for the Lake Placid IRONMAN. We stayed within eye contact all day, trading places back and forth. She maintained a strong consistent pace all day and won the womens race with a time of 8:30. This is one tough girl.

Thanks to all of the volunteers. I saw Mark Griggs at a few spots and we noted other club members along the way directing traffic and giving out aid. This was a great race over a great course. Hopefully Robin will hold it again next year. If you like the marathon, try the 50K. It is much more fun and a good tune up for your first 50 mile run.
