The Start of this Year's Navesink Challenge 15K

The parking lots were overflowing at Bodman Park this past Sunday for the Annual Navesink Challenge.  With about 600 or so participants this was the largest field in the races short history. The weather was near ideal with temperatures in the high 40's at the start and up to 50 as the 15K runners finished.  The wind was not an issue as the course was well protected from any gusts.

In the 15K for the men a new course record was set by Craig Segal of Holmdel shown finishing on the left in a time of 51:13 followed by Dave Slavinsky of Point Pleasant in a time of 53:52 and then Edwin Sena-Duyan of New York City in 54:47.  For the women it was Amanda Marino shown about to break the tape of Jackson (age 18) coming in first in 1:03:14 followed by JSRC's Karen Charles of Belmar in 1:04:03 and Sara Amitrani of Middletown in 1:06:09.

In the 5K it was Chris Horel of Middletown shown finishing on the left in 17:20 followed by Jason Robbie of Red Bank in 18:15 and then Ken Shatzer of Middletown in 18:32.  For the women it was Megan Guiny shown breaking the tape on the right of New York City in 18:47 followed by Catherine Satzke of Fair Haven in 19:36 and then Caitlen Dorgan of Red Bank in 21:26.

Lots of random awards were presented by Race Director Dave Zurheide and many of the runners went over the the Outback of Middletown for the post race party.

"I wanted to also drop a note that this was an amazing place to run - beautiful and challenging, the course was very steep for the first 8.5 miles, going from 400 to 900 feet above sea level in that short distance. After that it leveled and had a few smaller hills both up and down. It was only a 3 hour drive, and I will definitely take the challenge and do it again next year, and will carpool with anyone that is up for it. It was well organized with lots of heart for a great cause, and while water stops were spaced out quite a bit, and there were no latrines on the course, it wasn't really an issue.  The temps were 40 to 45 the whole way, and it was wonderful." - Ellen McCann - 2:02:14 (1st Half Marathon)

Club Volunteers in NYC's Central Park

It was an Orange Day at the NYC Marathon this year with the Club again volunteering at the finish area and lots of club members participating in the awesome event. It was a literal sea of orange along the entire course.

Athletic shoes

Got a pair (or a pile) of old sneakers that are too worn-out to give to charity? Nike will recycle any brand of athletic shoe through its Reuse-a-Shoe program. You can drop shoes off at any Niketown store or Nike Factory store; the company also has other drop-off spots, and if there’s not one near you, you can mail shoes in. (Get details on the Nike website.) The company processes and recycles the footwear to make sports surfaces for basketball courts, tennis courts, running tracks and playgrounds. Right now they’re collecting shoes to make athletic surfaces for New Orleans, to help bring youth sports back to the city as it rebuilds. To date, about 20 million pairs of athletic shoes worldwide have been recycled through the Reuse-A-Shoe program.
