A
typical Sunday Morning at Bodman Park at 8 am has about 40 to 50 runners who go
out every Sunday for the Club's Sunday Run through the back roads and trails of
the Navesink section of Middletown. This past Sunday, November 26th those
runners were joined by over 600 other runners as they took part in the Club's
Annual Navesink Challenge 5K and 15K races. The fall weather was ideal for
a jaunt through the woods over fallen leaves and the course was a challenge that
all the runners accepted.
In the 15K Challenge for the men it was Wilson Leiba (on the left) of Trenton in a time of 54:06, followed by Jaime Mora of Trenton in 57:35, Carlos Robles of Trenton in 58:2, James McGovern of Atlantic Highlands in 58:36 and David McGovern of Atlantic Highlands in 59:28. For the women it was Rachel Provost (on the right) of Millstone in 1:02:29, followed by Tina Morrison of Middletown in 1:03:54, Amanda Marino of Jackson in 1:05:11, Amber Hart of Colts Neck in 1:05:11 and Laurie Gordon of Stillwater in 1:08.
In the 5K race the men's winner was Constantin Ballos of Parlin in a time of 18:44 followed by Guy Gordon of Newton in 18:48 and Ken Vercammen of Edison in 19:31. For the women it was Catherine Satzke of Fair Haven in 20:38 followed by Karen Charles of Belmar in 20:42 and then Hannah Satzke in 20:55.
The John Campbell Memorial Award given to a volunteer was presented to the family of Art Glass who was a regular Sunday Runner at Bodman Park, a participant and volunteer at the Navesink Challenge. His daughter Colleen accepted the award on behalf of the family.
After the race many of the runners headed over to the Outback Restaurant in Middletown for a giant post race party hosted by the Restaurant.
The race benefited Habitat for Humanity and the Middletown Youth Athletic Association who together with the Jersey Shore Running Club had lots of volunteers along the course, working registration, helping with the start and finish and all the other tasks necessary for a very successful event.
Congratulations to Race Director, Dave Zurheide and the entire Navesink Challenge Committee who have made this event a classic here at the Jersey Shore.

To All of My Supportive
Collegues in the Running Community;
"After a protracted and valiant battle, my mother Jean Brennan has passed
on. She died peacefully surrounded by her loving family. She passed
through this veil of tears on Wednesday November 22 at 11 o' clock in the
afternoon. She left behind her loving and heartbroken husband of 51 years,
Thomas, six devoted children and eleven grandchildren.
My Mom loved coming to road races. She has been my #1 cheerleader &
fan since I began running in 1977. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting
her, you know she was one of kind.
Many thanks for all of your support and well wishes for these past 10 months.
It has been an excruciating ordeal for us all, and I thank you all from the
depths of my soul. We will be holding her viewing on Saturday, November 25
at Lakewood Funeral Home on Route 9 near the Howell-Lakewood border. Hours
will be 2-4 and 7-9."

Despite some dire weather forecasts of rain the Annual Hashathon Trail Race went of with little less than a sprinkle to keep the runners cool on the course. The course was slippery with the dampness and leaves and several runners came back with muddy shoes and scraped knees but no serious injuries. The men's winner (on the left) in a time of 39:57 was Dominic Grillo of Somerset and for the women (on the right) it was Amy Nalven of Brick in a time of 46:15.
Lots of awards were presented and the day continued with a post race party featuring the Band "Golden Seal"
Congratulations to Race Director, Mark Griggs and the many volunteers who made for another successful event.

I'd like to
personally thank all of my fellow JSRC members who participated in the first
annual Dennis Zilinski Memorial Run on Sunday. For those of you who don't
know me, I'm a Sunday morning Bodman regular and a member of the club since
2000. Dennis was my cousin. We had a tremendous turnout of approximately
1,300 runners and walkers. A special thanks to John MacGillivray for all
of his hard work and to Tim Mahoney for the touching ceremony. On behalf of my
family, many thanks to the great people who make up the Jersey Shore Running
Club and look forward to seeing you at next years race. Mike

A Personal Journey Part 1 by Christopher Wilcox
When the spring of 2006 started, I found myself 47 years
old and never more excited about the upcoming racing season.
The Christopher Wilcox a/k/a The Seinfeld road-show (it’s a show about
“nothing”) was going to be competitive for once, and live up to the hype
that dates back to junior year in high school.
A winter combination of spending time spinning a bike indoors at Brielle Cyclery, and running the Hill and Dale 10K course with JSRC friends gave me a good base for a change heading into the spring. Always a JSRC member first because of what the club has done for me, (I’ll spare you the Tim Mahoney/Donavan’s Reef story this time around), I found myself very much wanting to mix in a few triathlon events and travel this racing year, along with the regular Jersey Shore road races.
Fresh up from Naples, FL., (another indication I’m getting older), May started off great, where a 7th overall in the Bayhead 5K had me pointing in the right direction. Back down to Florida, and on June 4th I finish 3rd in my age group, 24th overall, in the Naples Sprint Triathlon. My very first triathlon, and I finish only 6 minutes behind Naples most famous triathlete, Joe Bonness. He is a world class athlete at age 50 in the sport of Ironman. An inspiration to many he is. 2006 was going to be a good year.
With two much harder Olympic distance triathlon’s now penciled in on the schedule for late summer, the focus was on the JSRC Summer series....my absolute favorite “Thursday Night” thing to do.
It starts good.....good as in “Is that really Pat Ford.....can I actually see him just ahead?” I could not have had a better benchmark....I was much faster, and with a little speed work and training, a whole lot faster was sure to come.
But that “fast” never came. Instead...nearly the
end came. An old nemesis called the
“calf muscle” decided to rear its ugly head during the Firecracker 5.
Pushing through the summer series was not the smartest move.
The calf would not heal.....instead it got much worse. Finally, crash! Closer to age 50 than 45...and it shows.
Best hope was 4-6 weeks. But this was a deep muscle tear...the worst I
ever had. It took 10 weeks to
muster any confidence without pain. My motivation gone, running season was over for me.
No true triathlon test either. It’s
another show about “nothing”.
Finally feeling better, October is a month spent training without a specific goal, (no offense to the Turkey Trot). But wait...the web browser finds that sandwiched between the Kona Ironman and Clearwater Half Ironman Championship is the Boca Bop Triathlon, in the small village of Boca Grande, FL...or is it Boca Vista, the Seinfeld’s retirement community!! November 5th....and 2006 still has a purpose. This little race was now my Ironman, and a chance to see not what might have been...but what 2007 could be. The show about “nothing” now had “something” to look forward to. Roadtrip! Part 2 Coming Up
The FoodBank will be doing Holiday Wrapping at Monmouth Mall and is looking for volunteers. If interested in helping out for an hour or two contact Ellen at 732-918-2600.

JSRC is again sponsoring families in need during the holidays, bringing them joy, food and gifts. This year, we are reaching out to our JSRC members and asking if anyone knows of families in the area that are in need during this holiday season. If you know of a family in need, please send the following information to vicepresident@jsrc.org by 11/15/06. We would need to know the family profile, town, # of children and age, and the JSRC member sponsor.
