NYC Marathon

Experience of a Volunteer - Chris Troyano

Another New York City Marathon & another volunteer session for Maria Vanora & myself. Despite having bronchitis, I kept my volunteer commitment, especially with the weather making it bearable for me to be outside but being a tad warm for a marathon. This time we were course marshals on Central Park South by 7th Avenue, near Columbus Circle. A course marshal makes sure all goes well for the runners & provides assistance, if necessary.

We were stationed on the course with all the marathoners. This was quite a change from the family reunion & chip clipping volunteer duties we had over the past several years. We reported to Columbus circle before 10:30AM. Sometime around 11AM all the course marshals were placed @ their stations. Our position was a half mile from the finish line & we had a great view of all the elite runners along with the rest of the marathoners. Of course, with the bulk of the crowd passing by us between 2 & 4PM, it was quite a challenge to spot any of the JSRC runners. However, the few that I did see on Central Park South, I shouted out encouragement & each runner acknowledged with a kind gesture.

Being out on the course enables one to really see the marathon experience, outside of running a marathon (not since 2001 for me). I was reminded of all the determination, the effort, the energy, the strength, & the struggle to get to that distant finish line. Marathoners were jogging, running, stopping to stretch & walking. Some collapsed, while others felt ill but continued to run. Medical staff offered assistance to numerous runners. NYC Police offered encouragement via a megaphone. The runners had the common goal to reach the finish line. They had to run the entire distance on their own, but they were far from being alone with over 35,500 runners, 2.5 million spectators & 12,000 volunteers.

Maria & I eventually left Central Park South after 4:30PM after a very full day. I'm not sure if it was a 100% good idea for my bronchitis, but it was a fun idea for the two of us. Now we have another marathon poncho & T-shirt to add to our collection along with some photographs. Many congratulations to all the JSRC marathoners this fall! We hope you are well on your way to a full recovery.

We finished 2nd! We finished 2nd! And a lot of us PR'd that course!! (What about Scott and Jeff running the thing in 14:xx minutes!! How about that?!) We scored 43 points with HOHA scoring 44. The bonus points made a big difference. Again I want to thank our wonderful, faithful team members. All of you!!

We had 18 JSRC team members there on Saturday. Go team! Marilyn (a two point bonus scorer) came out yesterday after a recent surgery. Now that's a dedicated XC champ! Bob Both, who hasn't missed a single start, scored again as a much needed bonus point. Thanks Bob! And finally, Larry Jones ran his first XC race this season (with or without the doctor's approval) and scored as a bonus point. Thank you, Larry!

A special ATTA GIRL goes out to a woman who has consistently finished as the FIRST JSRC XC female. Karen Charles. Karen hasn't missed a single race and leads the way every week finishing up there with the leaders. Many, many thanks Karen-your dedication is appreciated. It was great to have John Brodsky join us for his first XC race this season, and good to have Scott, Mary Beth, and Raman back. And you may or may not have noticed a Phill Hinck look-alike floating around there on Saturday. We can always use a cheering fan or two.

We are back at Tatum next week for the Halloween Handicap race. Should be interesting. These are the scorers as I understand it: Open Men: Jeff, Scott, John Papp Females: Karen, Charlotte Masters: Gary, Mark Bonus: Marilyn, Bob, Larry.

Congratulations to Charlotte Barry who has kept the spirit of the team up throughout the Series and has encouraged many runners to come out.  She has guided us all the way from a last place finish the first week to second place.

Bus

Last check there were still a few seats open on the Central Jersey Road Runners Bus for runners in the NYC Marathon. The busses leave from Cranford and take runners to the start and then pick them up at the meeting place directly across from the finish.  It is about the best way to go.  Check their web site for details at http://www.cjrrc.org

Jersey Shore Relay Update

We Need Your Help to Continue This Event

The Ninth Annual Jersey Shore Relay to benefit Special Olympics is scheduled for April 16, 2005. An application will be posted soon so save the date..  Last year's event drew over 1200 participants and over 200 teams but more importantly raised over $35,000 for Special Olympics.  This year's event will most likely be even bigger and better.  The committee planning the event will be holding its kick off meeting very soon.  Yes, it does take this long to plan and we need your help to keep the event going.   If anyone would like to participate on the committee please let us know.  We can use help in many different areas and the more volunteers we have the easier it is for everyone. No experience required.  If interested or to be placed on the distribution for the meeting notification just drop us an email at jsrc@hotmail.com. Thanks
