Navesink a Real Challenge

This Sunday! - Voted "Most Scenic Course at the Jersey Shore"

The Club's Navesink Challenge 15K and 5K are the Big Ones this coming Sunday, November 16th.  The 15K includes scenic back roads through the Navesink Section of Middletown and trails through Huber Woods. There are several "challenging" hills along the course which will test the ability of every runner. Its about the most scenic course at the Jersey Shore.  The 15 K is also a part of the Jersey Shore Grand Prix of Races.  The 5K is run on the back road and is also a very scenic course with a hill thrown in for good measure.  There will be lots of awards, random prizes as well as a Post Race Party at the Outback Steakhouse.  Entrants receive a great looking Dri-Release type of moisture wicking long sleeve shirt which will be perfect for running on the chilly fall days.  The race benefits the Middletown Youth Athletic Association and Habitat for Humanity. Get an application, instructions and more information on the Navesink Challenge  Web Page.

Coach Dave Zurheide

Our Spring/Summer/Fall at Holmdel Park seemed to go by so fast.  It feels like we just made the transition from our Golden Donuts’ Saturdays to our “traditional” Wednesdays.  Thanks to many, and Marti Rettino in particular, we had a great season at Holmdel Park.  A total of 55 different JSRC Members made at least one known appearance on Wednesday evenings – some of you may not even realize that you made it on the list!  We have lots of friends in low places (squirrels, woodchucks, chipmunks, etc.) helping to report on attendance so that no one would feel slighted.

The culmination of our season on October 22 was followed by an informal “awards” ceremony at the Court Jester on Route 34 in Aberdeen Township.  More than a dozen of us got together to celebrate, and to “honor” the deserving recipients of our newly created awards.  In the spirit of the Golden Donuts and in keeping with the imminent Halloween festivities, we bestowed Funky Punkin’ medallions to our three winners.  Nicolas Vanier, Wayne Baker and Marti Rettino were recognized for attending more than 20 (out of 29 possible) Wednesday evening Club Runs.  These awards, in keeping with “tradition,” were handcrafted by a local artist (my nine year old daughter, Annie), and reflected the Halloween theme.

In addition to the Funky Punkin’, we also conveyed a very special Spirit of Holmdel Park award upon Marti Rettino.  Except for the very first Wednesday session, Marti attended every Wednesday run through the entire season.  And even the one she missed, she had a doctor’s note to explain her absence (well, not really a doctor’s note, but she had a very good reason for not being there).  Marti served as assistant attendance taker when yours truly was unavailable, and therefore was at Holmdel Park more than me!  Marti assumed the role of de facto informal assistant director of the Wednesday Club Run, and it was appropriate that we honored her for her service to JSRC.  As usual, Marti displayed her energetic spirit and helpful attitude that we have come to expect in all Club Activities.  Thank you, Marti!

After our Fall/Winter break, the Saturday version of the Holmdel Park Club Run will resume in early January (Probably 1/10).  Stay tuned for more details.
