November 1st was the Birthday of one of JSRC's favorite law enforcement figures, Mr Tim Mahoney, and tomorrow, November 3rd is the Birthday of one of our most devoted lunatics, er uh, I mean Ultramarathoners, Mr Gene Gatens. Trooper Mahoney was just recently competing on yet another marathon, this past week, in Ireland. A week after last year's New York Marathon, Time was still grinning ear-to-ear, as he ran down the Belmar boardwalk, as he was and should have been , proud of his acheivment - that's what the sport is all about !!! Other than devising intricate law enforcement plans to prevent me from getting to a Wall Summer Series race, Summer of 2001 (his plans didn't work), Tim also is well-known for his specialty Lenten Hot Cross Buns and his research into snail mating behavior. His favorite cartoon was "Catch That Pigeon".
Ultra-nut Gatens has run 50 kilometer, 50 mile and 100 mile races !!! That's some sreious time on one's feet. Knowing Gene has assured me that the times in my career when I trained with broken toes was quite normal, as I saw him finish up about 20-24 miles at Bodman with a broken toe DUCT-taped to the other !!! With that said, and all those miles accounted for, you realize this is one disciplined and tough runner. When he's not putting his body through hell, Gene likes to read poetry of Shelly and Keats to animals at the local ASPCA shelter - it helps to calm them and assist in the healing of mange. Gene likes french fries with hot fudge on them. Happy Birthdays, Tim and Gene !!!!

Belated happy Birthday to Fred Rummel's (October 29)....YES, the same Fred Rummel who is Race Director of the Firecracker 5, who helps with the Wall PBA 5k and has had a big hand in the well-being of the JSRC 3 mile Summer Series . Fred also plays a major role in keeping the Monmouth County Park system healthy and accessible, allowing for nicer, safer and more beautiful places for us to run, than the streets and sidewalks (after 47,000 miles of running on sidewalks and streets - with very few off-road running outlets in my area and having got hit by a car three different times, I want you all to know how important our parks are !!!). Fred used to appear weekly in top New York City Comedy clubs, performing stand-up in the '80's and is credited with having invented the joke about Stop & Shop and A & P merging to form a new chain of supermarkets called "Stop & P". Happy Birthday, Fred !!!
Fred will be available at the Wall PBA 5K this Sunday for autographs and to accept birthday presents!
Following are some of the Club Members who will be running in the NYC Marathon this Sunday. Please wear your orange singlet or t- shirt so we can get your picture and when you pick up your race number see if you can get registered as a JSRC Team member. This will help us find your results and also score points for the Team competition. Don't worry about your pace as often its important just to have people on the team. The Club will also be working at the finish line so look out for us in our Orange Gear and we'll try and give you special attention.

A large field of runners participated in this year's Trick or Trot Race in Long Branch. Many runners wore costumes as they made their way down the scenic ocean front and returned back into Seven President's Park. The overall winner was Tom Hall in a time of 22:11 . Tom used the race as a tune up for next week's NYC Marathon where he is expected to be one of the top masters finishers. For the women it was 12 year old phenom Brianna Jackucuwicz of Farmingdale who bested all the women and came in 4th overall in a time of 23:06.
Next up on the Jersey Shore Race Scene is the Wall PBA 5K this coming Sunday, Nov 3rd - this is a "cooler" version of the Firecracker 5. Check the race calendar for all the up coming events.
Among the Club Finishers included:
Peggy McKean 37:10
Bill Burke 27:32
Cathy Craven 32:05(3ag)
Donna Mehler 36:30(1ag)
Jon Lowrie 28:55
Mike McAuliffe 24:11
Officers, Members of JSRC: Thanks for a great time at the Trick or Trot. It was truly a first class race that the officers and membership should be proud. The park, race course and accommodations were second to none. In addition, the participation of the Windmill Rest. and the hospitality of the Celtic Restaurant was fantastic. The food and, yes the beer gave me an excuse to follow my German Irish heritage and exercise my elbow for just a couple pints, due to the ride to the southern terminus on the GSP. After over 500 road races, 29 marathons and 18 years of running your event ranks at the top level. Joe and Maria Link, Cape May, NJ

My morning started out at 6:30 AM lying in my bed listening to 20-30 MPH winds. At least the rain seemed to have stopped that was pouring down all night long. I kept going over alternate courses for the Bar Anticipation Boy Scout Halloween 5K Run going off in a few hours at 10:00 AM. I figured with the wind and rain no one would be coming out to run anyway, so why not shorten the course and get everyone finished sooner.
As I was driving to Belmar along the beachfront the sand was blowing sideways from the east and I couldn't imagine running around Lake Como right into that wind. When I got to Bar A it was like being in the eye of the storm. The sky all around was black with storm clouds, but we were in a pocket of sunshine and the wind had almost totally died down. We decided to risk it and go with the original certified 5K race course. The race day turnout was very light but we still managed to assemble 100+ runners to come out and brave the elements. As it turned out we did have a shower during registration, but the race came off without any rain. All went well and we actually had some good finishing times ( see results ). Briana Jackuecewicz set a National Record on the Bar A 5K Certified Course..
As always the Post-Race Party and barbeque was excellent for all participants and volunteers. I would like to thank my courageous volunteers for coming out on a potentially terrible day to lend a hand to the Thunderbird District Boy Scout Event. Also, to make our hosts Reggie Hyde and Pat Mastrorilli another fun filled Bar A experience.
Another event was celebrated at this race, Al The Volunteer was honored by his family and friends with a Surprise 60th Bithday Party. Peggy and Teresa did a great job of coordinating with Bar A and all of Al's Friends.
Saturday October 26th is the birthday of JSRC Club member Peggy McKean. Teacher and field hockey coach, Peggy has run more marathons than I think I've run 5k's, most recently including the Chicago Marathon. Peggy also is an accomplished Scrimshaw artist and dabbles in amateur vucanology.

Thursday October 24th is Clarence Lurch's 82nd birthday. For those who don't know Clarence (most of you probably do), he has been one of the most active racers at the Jersey Shore. Clarence regularly cleans up in the 80+ category, and even steps down to take some prizes when only a 70+ age group is offered. Founder of Lurch Wrecking/Demolition, Clarence served the United States as a Navy "Sea Bee" in the Pacific theater of World War II. Ask him to see his cool tatoos, received while he was in the service, in 1941 and 1943 (they're fading a bit, but he's just as proud of them). Veteran's of WW II are becoming more and more rare - if you get the chance, tap into this national treasure and listen to one of his stories of that rapidly-becoming-forgotten period of our history. If you haven't seen Clarence compete at the Wall series, Lake Takanassee, Turkey Trot, Born To Run, Sheehan, Spring Lake, Belmar, etc., etc. try and catch him soon ! One of the people I look forward the most to seeing, and talking to, at races, Clarence has been competing in about 40-50 races per year, but seems to becoming more selective, as of late. There's a chance he may be at Trick Or Trot, this Sunday. Clarence was also an extra on the set of "It's A Wonderful Life" before dabbling in off-Broadway productions, once playing the lead in "Hamlet". He was also a door-to-door Fuller Brush salesman in 1948. If you see him, please wish Clarence Lurch a very Happy 82nd Birthday !!!

We had an overwhelming response to our web page Banner Phrase contest. There were over 100 entries submitted. The selection committee reviewed them all and came to the conclusion that the club is significant to each member in his or her own way. Instead of picking a winning phrase, we decided to make all submitted entries as winners!
On each visit, the web page will select a random banner phrase from the entire list and display it under the JSRC logo. See if you are lucky to see your banner phrase quickly! Winners will be notified individually of the winning prize and how to collect it. Thank you again for taking the time to enter the contest. Congratulations to all the winners!
Join Chris Frey and company on a night run this coming Monday evening, October 21st starting at 7:30 PM at the Allenwood School in Wall. Run will be about an hour and go through some local trails. A stellar group of twelve gritty JSRC team members braved the dreary weather and put in an outstanding effort at the Staten Island half marathon this past Sunday, Oct 13th.
First bit of good news in the Masters division. Bob Bythell, Tom Hall and Cliff Russell paced the team to a 2nd place finish. This leaves TEAM JSRC in SECOND PLACE OVERALL in the NYRRC standings, 38 points ahead of 3rd place West Side Runners (WSX). More importantly, JSRC is now 46 points ahead of 4th place Staten Island Athletic Club (SIAC). There are only two races left, worth a total of 45 points. So, WE CLINCHED a NYRRC Team Award!!! Even if JSRC doesn't "toe the line" for the next two, we can finish no lower than 3rd. Congrats to all who've contributed over the past year!!
Next, the good news in the Veterans division. Scoring in JSRC's fifth place finish were Hall, Mike Anstadt and Russ Stallone. This keeps JSRC anchored in 2nd place overall in the standings. But, the lead over 3rd place Greater New York is only 7 points, and the lead over 4th place Staten Island is now 27. Both will be fielding deep teams in the marathon and the final Double Points 10K on December 15th. We have to finish strong to stay in the "money". So mark down the date and come out and cheer and celebrate the team victory. Also putting in strong performances were first timer Adrian Harris, Mary Conry, Diana Pittet, Mike Kinsella, Ron Cohen, Kathy Porzio and Diane Cheer. Jerry Convery pulled up lame during the race and became the prime cheering section.
Best news of the day was Bob Bythell's win of the grand raffle prize. Bob, Tom Hall and Diane Cheer were the smartest by sticking around with the 75 or 100 or so others in the running for a round trip ticket on Continental to anywhere they fly domestically. Second pull, Bob was a winner! Among the Club finishers were:
Mary Conry 1:39:51(4ag)
Diane Cheer 2:12:52
Dave DeMonico in a time of 27:12 continued his winning ways and Kate Harper finishing as the first female in 33:17 put in another stellar performance at the Run Thru Deal 5 Mile Run held this past Sunday.
Big ones next weekend are the Run thru Interlaken a fast and flat 5K on Saturday which includes a fantastic post race party for all runners and volunteers and the Seaside Half Marathon which is staged by our good friends to the south in the Ocean Running Club. And going forward its the Club's Annual Trick or Trot Race to be held on Sunday, October 27th. A flat, fast, ocean front race with lots of awards for top finishers, random prize drawings and the traditional post race costume parade and party. Get more info at the Trick or Trot Web Site.

Generally everyone who runs and finishes a race are considered "winners". But in this event nearly everyone was basically LOSERS. Phil Hinck, the biggest of all...he somehow thought the Oak Tree Lodge was on Belmar Blvd - and took a group with him nearly into Belmar before turning around and arriving at the Oak Tree Lodge Party nearly when all the beer ran out - real losers!.

A large field of nearly 700 hundred runners participated in the 30th edition of the Jersey Shore Half Marathon staged by the Shore Athletic Club.
