Navesink Challenge - Help Needed

We need some volunteers to help with the Inaugural Navesink Challenge which will be held on Sunday, November 25th. We need two people to ride bikes leading and following the runners along the course. We also need someone to help mark the course on Saturday, November 24th (on a mountain bike). The event will benefit the Middletown Youth Athletic Association and specifically go toward improving the "Club House" we use for the Sunday Run. Anyone who is interested in helping out please send in an email to jsrc@hotmail.com as soon as possible. There will be a meeting this coming Monday, Nov 12 at 7 PM at the Club House in Bodman Park for anyone who is interested.

Hashathon This Sunday

The Hashathon which is a Trail Run and Race through some scenic and challenging trails of Cheesequake State Park will be held this Sunday. The distance is about 6.5 Miles. But don't expect to do your normal race pace. Its a perfect recovery run for all those NYC Marathoners. The Park is conveniently located just off the Garden State Parkway. For more information and directions go to the on line application.

In addition to many club members who ran in this year's NYC Marathon a large group of members volunteered to work and help out at the finish line. The Club worked at the Celebrity Finish Line which included the Police, Fire and Elite Runners. It was a beautiful day for the Marathon and the many police and firemen who finished were emotional at the finish as they were escorted to the special finish area by Club Members. Many ran in memory of their fallen brethren and wore commemorative names on their shirts in their honor. It was a very special event. The overall winner was Tesfaye Jifar of Ethopia who set a new course record in a time of 2:07:43. For the women it was Margaret Okayo of Kenya in a time of 2:24:21 First American Man was Scott Larson of Colorado in a time of 2:15:26 in 13thplace and for the women it was Deena Drossin of California in a time of 2:26:58. I did the Mountain Masochist Trail Run in Lynchburg, Va. over the weekend. Terrific race. 12,000 ft. of elevation gain over 53 miles of gravel road, rocky single track and fire roads. Climbs that put Vermont to shame. Beautiful foliage, stream crossings, wildlife...I finished in 10:00:55 (10 hours, 55 seconds), 48th out of 242 starters. The winner broke 7:00.

Cross Country Series Continues

Hello Cross Country fans (I am assuming that at least some of you fit the description) - Our organized team effort since the first week of the Shore AC Series has been spotty at best -- probably the result of the terrific race menu in the Shore Area. Much to my surprise, we fielded a team at Thompson Park this past Saturday! At least that was what was reported in the Asbury Park Press Community Section. As to who exactly represented us, I have no idea -- I was not there either! I know that many of us are committed to races during the next two weekends (including me), so expectations for a JSRC cross country team are low (although please feel free to run if you choose). But, we have a real opportunity for the final race of the series on 11/3 at our "home" course of Holmdel Park. No commitment is expected of anyone at this time -- please keep that date in mind if you would like to represent our club at one of the premier cross country courses on the East Coast. If you can think of any other JSRC members (or "ringers" who we can recruit) that may have an interest, pass this message along (or send their information to me so that you won't be blamed for annoying them). Remember, the cost of the race is a staggering $3! You cannot find a better race bargain anywhere. I will send another inquiry when we get closer to 11/3 (in case you want to plan to ignore it). Thanks for "listening," Dave Zurheide

The Flag Run

October 13, 2001

Deana MacLean

I decided I had to find a way to do itI heard about it through our running club website. Afterall, my alma mater has suffered through 2 terrorist attacks and lost precious lives. I was in, I was going to run, but where was the place that we were to meet? I got a brief e-mail, then nothing more. Friday night the e-mail gave 2 locations. So, I chose the easiest access point, Plainsboro. It said that runners should get there around 4 so I got there a little early as I thought they might need some help. It was a small group as this was a rather short notice ideaa pilot in Connecticut who thought that it would be nice to remember those lost in flight by making a cross country relay of runners. It started in Boston at Logan October 10th, the one month anniversary and is scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles November 11 for Veterans Day, running 24/7. So, ready to do my meager 3-5 miles, I wanted to show support in remembrance of the ones we lost. Vans were ready to help those who did not want to run the entire distance of our section. By 5 o'clock, the flag was just getting to Menlo Park, very behind schedule.

We were still a small group which kept steady at 15. Our group director kept in constant contact with the Menlo Park director. And I kept wondering how big was the flag? Would I be able to carry it? We had an unusual collection, mostly pilots, a person who was supposed to be in D.C. to run the Army 10 miler, but that was cancelled so he decided to come here, 2 firemen who run Boston and wanted to be a part of the run somewhere somehow and spent 5 hours driving to get involved with carrying the flag. They said that they have spent countless hours helping in NY and felt determined to carry the flag. All with different drives that led us to this place but with one common reason, we wanted to show the pride we feel in our country combined with the unity we feel as runners.

The anxiety increased when we heard they were about 2 miles away, the escort vehicles arrived along with the Red Cross with some water and food for us after we came back to our start point. Then we saw feet coming in the dark and the silhouette of the Flagthe flag! Emotion was really high for us all because we knew it was now our turn. We felt our coordinator, Paul should start while we followed in 2 vans. He had his father of 71 ( still running 6-7 miles daily) with him. What a great sight! People started cheering and honking their horns, Our time had come, and we all piled out of the vans to join Paul.

It was amazing the reaction and unity that people showed. We were running not to win a race but to enjoy the experience, and remember this flag had already made an important trip to Iraq in an F-150 during Desert Storm and now was on another important trip. People literally came out of diners and stores as we passed, waved flags and cheered from cars. Images that were incredible became etched in our mindsthe policeman in Princeton Junction who gave the flag a military salute as we passed, the silhouette of the waving flag as we came into Trenton on a building.

I got back in the van for a rest but not for long. I felt as others did that I wanted to be out there, out there with the Flag. Our earlier plan to have a relay with only one person running at once was abandoned as we all felt drawn to the experience of being one with this object that we cherish so much. The miles passed but not our energy, we had too much support by people passing by as well as great escorts by the police. We came into Trenton, it was coming to a closeno one wanted it to be over. We arrived into Morrisville, PA, tired and hungry and signed the poster that will continue on to LA.

We talked to the photographer that took pictures for a book that he is doing on the disaster and the aftermath of patriotism. I could not believe that I originally was going to try for 5 miles and actually did around 14, and sharing the carrying of the symbol that is etched in all of our hearts. We wished the PA team well, and headed back to New Jersey knowing that we were running for those who were no longer with us and for the future that is so uncertain. This flag that has been to Irag and now is traveling to LAmay it make it there without our country loosing any more lives at the hands of terrorism.

With sunny skies and a chill in the air the strong winds did not deter the many runners who participated in the Jersey Shore Half Marathon held at Sandy Hook State Park. The event was started with a singing of God Bless America and the Star Spangled Banner which inspired the runners on their 13.1 Mile Race. The overall winner was Eric Escorsia Villa in a time of 1:13:44. On the Women's side it was Kathy Heabel in 1:24:33 (shown finishing on the right). Running for a Cause

Dear friends, family and co-workers, As many of you already know, on November 10th I will be participating in Ironman Florida in Panama City Beach, Florida. I set this goal for myself last year, and have spent a good part of 2001 working toward accomplishing this goal. (For the few family members, friends and co-workers I have not bored with the details of this event, it consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112-mile bike and a 26.2 mile run - yes, all in one day.) Since the events of September 11th, I've found it very difficult to train with the single-minded focus I had known previously. I have continued to train, but no longer found the same satisfaction in what I was preparing for. After receiving the Ironman USA newsletter announcing the Janus Charity Challenge, I feel I have found a new sense of purpose for competing in Ironman Florida. Janus has offered to donate $500 to each charity that an athlete raises funds for. (See http://www.ironmanflorida.com/relieffund.html) I have decided to use this opportunity to raise funds for the Uniformed Firefighters Association Widows & Children's Fund. One hundred percent of the funds donated to this charity are given directly to the benefit of the widows and children of NYC Firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. It is where the NYC Fire Department has asked donations be sent. (See http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/fdny/html/home2.html) If you want to donate to the firefighters' families, there is no other 'recognized' fund. The UFA fund is set up by the firefighters, for the firefighters. I have already contacted Janus and verified that the UFA Widows and Children's fund qualifies for their matching funds offer. My husband, Bryan, is a New York City firefighter. Bryan arrived at the Trade Center on Tuesday, shortly after the buildings collapsed. He spent many hours and days in the following weeks dedicated to the rescue efforts, but was eventually able to come home to his family. So many of his fellow firefighters did not. 343 NYC firefighters lost their lives trying to save others that day. Please let me know if you would like to make a donation, either by return e-mail to horan@bellatlantic.net, by returning the enclosed form to me by mail, or by calling me at (732) 449-1596. Or, you can just send me a check, payable to the UFA Widows & Children's Fund. I'm leaving for Florida with my family on November 6th, so I'd like to hear from you before then. Any donations will be greatly appreciated. If you would like more information, let me know. The following quote is from an article on xtri.com by Kara Douglass: ". . . Did someone on those planes or in those towers, or the Pentagon dream of completing an Ironman? she asked. If they did, or if they had any dreams, I owe it to them to spend my time here on earth accomplishing mine. They ran out of time. If I waste and squander my time, if I don't follow my dreams, I disrespect their memory." Please feel free to forward this to anyone else you think may be interested. Thank you for your time and consideration.
