Club Guaranteed to Clean Up at Spring Lake

Volunteers Get Two T-Shirts - Party

The Club is guaranteed to clean up this year at the twenty fifth running of the largest race in New Jersey this coming Saturday. We'll be well represented and many of the speedier club members will most likely take some top spots. For those who will not be running we need some volunteers again this year to help with the clean up. The job is easy - just need to collect all those boxes and fold them up. The street sweepers do all the rest. Just get there before the race starts and look for the Club Tent near the Start. All volunteers will receive a Spring lake 5 Shirt (the 25th year special edition) as well as a Special Edition Spring Lake Club Shirt. After the Race we'll also have a Party for all the volunteers at Bar Anticipation - since the old favorite the Beach House shown on the left is not suitable even for this Club. And remember if you run wear a Club Shirt so we can take your picture and we'll Post it in our on line photo Album. And make sure you stop by to report your time at our Tent. Email for more information. See everyone there!!!!!

Avon 5K is On

The popular Avon 5K is back on and is scheduled for Saturday, June 2nd. Contact the Avon Recreation Dept for an application at 732-502-4517.

All Night Run

Details to the night run on Friday May 25th.

Chris Frey

Ed, Terese, Gene, Susan, Chris after a Recent Training Run in prep for All Nighter

At this point the plan is to meet at my house at 9:00 p.m.. We will run down to the boardwalk. Run along the boards to Deal Lake, back along the boards thru Spring Lake, Sea Girt and Manasquan. We will run up the bike path to Allaire State Park and do a variety of loops in Allaire. We are planning to stay out all night. We need to fine tune the route so that we have enough stops for aid, so the "course" may still evolve somewhat. We will head back to my house from Allaire. For those who didn't get enough by running all night, you can head over to Spring Lake and run the Spring Lake 5 to cap off a nice long training run.

We are going to follow up the run with a BBQ Saturday afternoon, once everyone has had a chance to get some sleep. Maybe 3:00 or so.

At this stage the plans may still change a bit. If you want to run, get in touch with me so that you can be informed of any changes to the schedule.

RRCA Coaching Certification Program

Hazlet, New Jersey on the weekend of June 9 and 10

John MacGillivary, RRCA

This is the only program in the country focused on coaching adult long distance runners. I was successful in getting the instructor to commit to come here to teach the program, so that our NJ clubs could have easy access to this. I have reserved 15 of the 30 spots at the program for NJ clubs. However, most of the paid applications are coming from people outside of NJ. As of this coming Thurs, May 10 - any of the dedicated NJ spots not taken will be given to the first people to pay, regardless of their state. We can only accept 30 people per course. Once the course is filled, we must turn away all others Due to the scarcity of certified instructors to teach this program, I doubt that we will get it back here for at least several more years. This is your best opportunity to take the course.

.This program will also help the sport of running and especially our participating clubs gain more credibility by creating a true standard for coaching our fellow runners. I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity while it is in NJ. The details and registration form are posted on the RRCA web site (www.rrca.org) If you have any problem accessing it or have other questions, please contact me directly. Thanks for your help. Regards, John MacGillivray NJ Representative for the RRCA - 732-603-9390

Team Crash & Burn (Gene, Chris, Johnny) after a Training Run. The group will be meeting every Sunday at 7:30 AM at the Hospital Road Parking Lot of Allaire State Park to run through some great trails. Contact Chris for more information.

Trail Triple Crown

White Clay Creek State Park, Delaware Saturday, April 28

by Gene Gatens

The Trail Triple Crown was an exercise in perseverance. Runners were invited to enter any of three separate races -- a half marathon, a 10k or a 5k -- or run all three consecutively and be scored in the special Triple Crown category. Apparently, the majority of the 260 total runners knew something that we 30 Triple Crown entrants didn't -- that this was going to be a very tough day of running. The trails at White Clay Creek State Park, close to the U of Delaware, in Newark, are rough and hilly -- common of most good ultramarathon courses in the Mid-Atlantic region -- and it didn't take long for some of us to yield to better judgment and start walking the extremely long climbs.

The 1/2 marathon course included two cold, slippery, shin-high stream crossings. The half marathon went off at 7:30 am with 112 runners. With the start time of the 10k race set for 10 am sharp, the length of each TC runner's rest period, between races, depended on how quickly he or she finished the half. Several runners had not completed the half marathon as the 10k went off, so they were forced to turn right around at the start/finish and begin running again, with the clock already ticking for the 10k, no less. Three TC entrants decided to call it a day after completing the half, reducing the TC field to 27 for the start of the 10k. The 10k course was every bit as rocky, rough and hilly as the 1/2 marathon course, only shorter. It was a relief to know that the race distances would get shorter as the day grew hotter. The 5k began on schedule at 11:15 and again, some TC runners were still completing the 10k run as the new race began. Another three TC runners dropped out after the 10k, reducing the group to 24, of a total field of 76, for the 5k.

As we lined up at the start and heard, for the third time, the identical pre-race invocation from a local minister, I was envious of all the 5k runners who slept late and were starting this race on fresh legs, and it was important to keep this in perspective as I was passed on the hills by old women and young kids in high tops. It was extremely warm and humid by 11am, and the cumulative effects of the weather, and 20 miles of tough trail running, were starting to add up. It showed on the faces of the gritty TC runners who were still miles from the finish of the 10k as the 5k field passed them on the way out. Running at a deep deficit now because of two consecutive tardy starts, I suspect this endeavor was more about completion, for them, than competition. Johnny Rodriguez ran the half in 1:55:41, for 29th place out of 112. His 52:05 in the 10k was good for 27th out of 70. And in the 5k, Johnny was 31st out of 76, in 30:41. The total of his three rankings placed him 11th among 24 TC finishers. I was 53rd in the half, in 2:04:36; 53rd again in the 10k, in 1:02:43; and, with rigor mortis setting in, 46th in the 5k, in 35:07, a PR for futility.

The men's Triple Crown winner was ultramarathoner Barry Lewis, 41, of Philadelphia, who finished second in the 1/2, first in the 10k, and first in the 5k (20:35!) for a total score of four. Lewis is on a roll: he took first at the Hinte-Andersen 50k, in March, in 3:41:21, and second at the Bull Run 50-miler, in April, in 7:05:38 The women's winner was one of those gritty folks who was still finishing up the half as the 10k was going off, and so on. Terri Cochran, 50, of Va., was already 8 minutes in the hole when the 10k started, and many more as the 5k began.

At the awards presentation, held about one half hour after the completion of the 5k, the RD announced that, regrettably, there were no women's TC finishers, to which Cochran, who was literally just crossing the finish line, responded, "I finished!!" After the laughter and cheering ended, she added "I don't really care about awards, but that was a lot of work to not get credit for it." Amen.

Visit the Crash and Burn Web Page for more information on some of their future challenges. Members of Crash and Burn will be running at Allaire State park this Sunday starting at 7:30 AM. All are invited. The group will be meeting at the Parking Lot adjacent to the park on Hospital Road. If you never ran in Allaire State park it contains lots of neat and challenging trails. The run will e about 10 miles with a group possibly doing a second loop for 15 to 20.
