Thanks Thanks to all the JSRC volunteers who helped make this Year's New Jersey Area Six Special Olympics held at Long Branch High School on Saturday, May 13, 2000 another success. The pictures tell the story! Broad Street Run 2000 (May 7- 10 Miles) Deana MacLean During the week I thought about itat night I felt my steps more, my mind was in Philadelphia, thinking about all the images that had once had been close to me as a resident of the suburbs and a commuter into center city. I had never done this run before but had driven the road many times, taken the train to Market Street Station. Cities have a smell of multiple ethnicity's, and generations. I would see them for the first time in running shoes and bib, with thousands of others. Saturday came with heat and humidity that tore through my nostrils, and friends called, " Are you really going to do that race?" How could I not? I lived there so long it would be like denying going to visit a dear relative that you had not seen in years. So, I packed my stuff and headed out to the asphalt and concrete of the city of Brotherly Love. Early Sunday morning I joined the herd on the subway and listened, listened to the cacophony of conversations about various runs and what running means to so many people. Then the landscape starts to unfold at the girls' high school as we prep for our spot at the start I check for my "chip", get as much fluid as I can and get in place. Then after the mayor uttered his words we clap to those in wheelchairs, next the elites start, and now we begin. But this is to be a "fun" run because I want to explore my trip mentally as well as physically being a mid-pack runner allows you to do that. But the weather does start to take its toll not enough water, so I take it easy. And when there are water stops, I make sure to thank the volunteers, especially the children. We are now one soul, the volunteers, organizers and runners. People waving, calling out encouragement. A child who hands me some Gatorade gets a smile as big as a Cheshire cat when I tell him, "I hope to see you on this side of the table someday". By mile three, I start to see people walking, by six people are fainting. I am glad I brought plenty of fluid. I maintain a slower pace but it gets me through to the finish at the Navy Yardand I check for my chip. The run was hard in the heat but it was worth every step because I shared an experience with thousands of others who enjoy the experience, and the feeling of accomplishment. No, I am not a fast runner but I did finish, and it felt good!
