Club Marches in Belmar Parade

Some of the many club members who participated in this year's Belmar St Patrick's Day Parade

The Jersey Shore Running Club again participated in the Annual St Patrick's Day Parade in Belmar.  A large group of runners did a pre parade run from Bar Anticipation, enjoyed a hearty breakfast and then marched with our decorated float in the Parade down Main Street in our Green Shirts.  It was a fantastic day for a run and a parade with several hundred thousand people lining the streets.  Thanks to Clarence Lurch for bringing his 1942 Jeep and pulling our float in the parade.

Relay Deadline Approaching

A Really Fun Event at the Jersey Shore

Just a few more weeks to get in on pre-registration rates for the Jersey Shore Relay set for April 17.  Already we have a great field with many of last year's teams returning and several new teams coming in.  Its a really fun event  so get your team together and register - you can mail in registration or register on line. You don't need to identify all of your team members until the day of the race and you can do the race with less than 5 runners.  It all benefits Special Olympics. It features a great post race party at the Stone Pony.  Get all the details on the Relay Web Site.

South Belmar Votes to Restrict Road Races

The Boro of South Belmar has passed a resolution restricting road races in the boro to 4 a year.  The resolution passed by a 4 to 1 vote.  It was passed despite testimony from the Police Chief who indicated that the races have had minimal or no impact on the community, comments from residents who said they did not have a problem with the races and testimony from several club members who indicated the benefits the races bring to the community and the charities that they support. Assemblyman Sean Kean also provided a letter through a representative urging that the resolution not be passed. Two residents in attendance indicated they were inconvenienced by the races and it disrupted their Saturday morning routines..   It  has set a precedent which hopefully other towns will not follow.  What do you think?  Post your comments on the Runners Forum.

JSRC Holmdel Park Journal 2/22/04

(The infrequent and somewhat inane commentary from our Club Run)

Until recently the weather has been as chilly as my fingers on the keyboard -- feeling a bit frozen and lifeless!  The near springlike temperatures of the past two weeks has injected warmth into our Saturday run, and thawed my digits (and brain, subject to interpretation, of course).

Yesterday marked the "point of no return" in our Saturday schedule, so there is no looking back (would you really want to?)!  With seven (7) Saturdays under our CoolMax/GoreTex waistbands, we have a clear leader in the never-ending quest for the Golden Donut.  Our 2002 Champion, "Mr. Hip" himself (he'll understand the reference if no one else does), Jim Buckler controls his own destiny, going seven for seven.  That's more impressive than Pete Rose's statistics in a day/night double header, and Jim does not bet on his own team!  As the inaugural winner of the famed Golden Donut, Jim is looking to overcome last year's sophomore jinx and return to circular baked goods prominence.

Despite the worse-than-frigid weather in early weeks of the season, we have had several JSRC newcomers join in the hunt.  John Donelik, a relative neophyte to running, has been a stalwart during the worst of the weather.  John has logged five (5) visits to Holmdel Park, and shares second place with the wife/husband team of Chris and Bill Dunn.  Chris and Bill, however, deserve special mention for earning three (3) Donut Points each -- they have regularly supplied dozens of our favorite treats along the way -- THANK YOU Chris and Bill!

There are still six weeks left in our season, culminating on March 27 with the Golden Donuts Award ceremony.  As you know, our Saturday running is good-natured and lighthearted, and all-too-often weather-impeded.  We have fun, and manage to make adjustments for the conditions.  If you are fearful that we are always traversing the cross country course no matter what the circumstances, be mindful that we have resorted to the local roadways -- although reluctantly.  So, as the Mother Nature continues to hint of spring, feel free to come and slosh through the mud or crunch through the snow with us.  Runners/walkers of every ability/pace are always welcome.

Yee Haw!

Dallas Marathon Report

Arrived at DFW airport Friday afternoon.  My ex husband sent his law firms black stretch limo to pick me up.  (did not mention that Eugene, the driver would also try to "pick me up")  I poured myself a glass of wine and duly chatted with Eugene.

Five minutes later we pulled up to a local WATERING  hole to meet my ex.  (I opted for top shelf margaritas).

After imbibing and checking out the real cowboys,  Pphil and I parted.  Eugene whisked me off to the Worthington  Hotel to pick up my race number.   Giving new meaning to S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G  before a marathon.

No expo meant no shopping so I had Eugene drive me to my hotel.  I hated it.  Rather than divulge my disappointment to Eugene,  who would undoubtedly tried to fix the situation, I dismissed him.  Cancelled my room.  Started making calls.

Whoops!!!!!!!  There was a huge convention in town and i could not get a hotel downtown for two nights straight.  in a panic because I was to meet my old boss at Joe t.Garcias at 7 p.m. I  hastily booked in to the downtow Radisson for Friday night.  When my door card would not open the freaking door I  got pissed off, headed back to the front desk, stopped on the mezzanine floor and started making calls to other hotels.  Found a Residence Inn  4 miles from the start.  Worried I would not get a yellow cab  to the start I told myself I would just wake early and run in if need be.  I did try to bribe "ol yeller" to come and get me.  His body language along with the "ums" eminating from his mouth said he was not leaving his bed at no 6a.m.

Get me to dinner toute suite:

Knowing I would not be able to get a taxi  in river plaza, I  had the cabbie wait for me to check in.  At this point  I wanted was a drink and a cigarette.  now mind you, there are no wet bars in cabs and Fort Worth cabs are filthy.  ew ew ew.  We pull up to joe t.'s at exactly 7 and the hostess informs me there is no smoking in Texas restaurants.  and they say you can't go home again.

 The morning after:

I woke at 4 a.m. Texas time.  L ooked at the race time- 7:30a.m. Barring having to run in I was going to be on time!  Looked in the race packet for a chip.  none.  Ate leftover beans and rice, dressed, called a  cab.  Thank God those conventioners sleep in. 15 minutes later we are barreling through empty streets...shared with the driver that I ate at joe t. garcias.  He was incredulous that I drank tequila and ate spicy mexican before the marathon.  He couldn't get me downtown fast enough.   giddyup!
