Upcoming Team Info

Powerbar 20 Miler and Relay

If you are interested in a good relay, the Powerbar 20 Relay in Central Park on Saturday March 23rd is a fun event and a great team warmup for the JERSEY SHORE RELAY. The total mileage is 20 miles, and teams can be either 2 or 4 members.(run either 10 or 5 mile legs). Great atmosphere at the handoffs, and good 5 mile loop thru Central Park. We will arrange a carpool into NYC, and will help you get on a team. If you are training for a marathon, you can run the full 20 miles as a training run. We are not looking for competitive teams, just a good road trip and a fun day. However there are many categories, including all male, all female, masters(40+), mixed masters for those who want to race. Email Jerry Convery (bestguy7@aol.com) if you are interested. We will need to set up team entries by March 12; (entries for team go in together.) Any questions, call Jerry at 732-290-1920 after 6 pm.

Team JSRC Update

Tom Hall

OK Team, good news and bad news. First the good news. The weather was great...warm and NO RAIN! Travel into Manhattan was easy, with no problems. We had FIVE JSRC members compete, four in the master plus age category. The course was tough with significant hills out and back. But we posted some great times....with everyone coming in under 20:00!!!

First the results;

Lou Malizioso 54th 17:32

Tom Hall 73rd 17:57

Bob Childs 79th 18:04

Frank Barker 158th 19:30

Dave Sauls 173rd 19:59

First the bad news. We only had two runners in the Veterans category! So, we don't score (minimum 3). The shame of it is the following; If we had another 50+ runner come in around 18:20, we'd have taken FIRST. 20:38 would have given us SECOND and 21:40 would have given us THIRD!!! So, half the battle is getting a team to the starting line, healthy! This no-score drops us to about sixth place, but we're right in the thick of it! We need to field a team for this coming weeks Brooklyn half marathon!!!

Now the great news. Unofficially, I think our masters team (replete with crusty old veterans) finished fourth overall, giving us 8 points (I think). This would keep us TIED FOR SECOND PLACE overall with the New York Harriers - AWESOME!! Looks like the top 5 teams are starting to pull away from the field! Check out the NYRRC page, team championship section when it's updated this week!

Just heard from another master runner interested in racing with us....Jeff Neis, a former 2:25 marathoner and 1:07 half marathoner from Toms River just getting the rust off his wheels. Should help us! All vet runners....let me know if you're running Brooklyn this week. My home phone number is (732) 758-9220. Business number is (732) 946-5651. I'll give out my cell phone number when we're meeting to car pool in!

JSRC Teams Report

Jerry Convery

Our JSRC Team is doing very well in the NYRRC Club Championship Series. Our Masteres team is second in the standings and our Veterans Team is presently Third and looking to move up this Sunday. Our Women's Masters are currently in Fifth Place. The top five teams get awards at year end.

Our top runners have been Tom Hall, Bill Scholl, Bob Childs, Dave Sauls, Tom Mulvaney, Jane Erbe and Mary Conry.

We have found a great local pub near the NYRRC Club House to celebrate our efforts (Tom Hall buys the first round) and we urge all JSRC members to join the team. Even if you don't score for the team, we have a lot of comraderie and realy enjoy the road trips.

We are looking for recruits for the POWERBAR 20 Mile Relay in NYC on Saturday, , March 23. This is not a points race but a great team event. Contact Jerry Convery at Bestguy7@aol.com for more information.

Message from Your New President

Bill Koch

On behalf of the new club officers, I would like to express our appreciation to Jerry Frazee and the outgoing officers for a great job last year.

We have a great Club that has many great things going for it. Our philosophy is not to take ourselves too seriously and to enjoy running and the pleasure of socializing with our fellow runners. We are an inclusive club that doesn't care if you run slow or fast.

Some modest goals for 2002 are:

1. Encourage more participation from our membership. We have a tremendous talent pool that we need to tap into. Anyone with suggestions should let us know. We are listening! What can we do to make our new members feel more welcome? Are you on the email list?

2. Encourage more interaction and cooperation with our sister running clubs. We are all runners and we celebrate that fact first.

3. Encourage even more club events. Ira is coordinating a JSRC cruise for early 2003. Perhaps some bus trips out of the immediate area to some races that we may not normally attend as a group. (Any suggestions? Again, we are listening!) Explore the idea of some non-running events i.e. group hike or kayaking or rafting etc.

4. Volunteer! Ask not what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club. All of us should volunteer several times a year. Our busy agenda can't exist without volunteers. Can't be a race director? How about an Assistant Race Director?

5. Publicize the tremendous job we do in assisting local charities and programs. Anyone interested in a Public Relations position?

6. Keep it fun!

JSRC Members Run in Portugal

Where to escape from a dreary February in New Jersey? Several JSRC members opted for a week in Portugal for a running vacation. Arriving in Lisbon to spring like temperatures, a walking tour of ancient fortresses, palaces, and churches was a wonderful experience. Prices are among the best in Europe especially for food and drink. (Wine is ridiculously inexpensive) Our runs were diversified with city running on cobblestone streets and

then off to Sintra with a steep run to a mountaintop palace and ancient Roman Fortress. The remainder of the trip was in the south coast area on the border with Spain. Staying in the ancient town of Alcutim on a sailboat, runs consisted of rowing across the river into Spain for a run to another hilltop Moorish Fortress and beautiful runs in the hills and along the Guadiana River past blooming almond trees and olive groves. Headed out for a early morning run are: Adrian Harris, Verleen and Norm Benzing from Florida, Kati and Joe Taylor and Bill Koch. Not shown is the photographer, Tricia Harris
