The Start of Ryan's Run

Steve Waite of Little Silver was the Men's winner in a time of 15:51 and for the women it was Jill Evarts of Middletown in a time of 18:00.

The Second annual Ryan's Run was a big success, thanks to great weather, volunteers, runners, sponsors and the help of the JSRC and Phil and Penny Hinck! This 5k event takes runners through Middletown's horse country and into Huber Woods Park for a brief cross country.  It is a favorite shore area event for many! Our race is a special family event that has attracted some great runners, and supports a great cause, the RAKMF. www.rakmf.org Thank you very much to the family of JSRC runners who come out and support us.

The Start of this Year's Sheen 5 Miler

A spectacular day for a spectacular event at the Jersey Shore.  The George Sheehan 5 Miler was again dominated by the elite Kenyan runners who put in some spectacular times.  The men's race was extremely close with the winner Isaac Aruesei  shown finishing on the left having an edge of a few seconds.  For the women on the right it was Eunice Chepkirui in a time of 27:28

Congratulations to Race Director Phil Hinck and his assistant Penny and all the volunteers from the local running clubs:  Jersey Shore Running Club, Freehold Area Running Club and Shore Athletic Club as well as all the local organizations who made it a true community event.

There were lots of spectators along the route cheering the runners on and giving them encouragement..

Special Thanks to Gina Dorio of Madison who volunteered to sing the National Anthem at the last minute and then ran the race - see photo below.

In asking George Sheehan what his father would think of the perfect road-racing weather after he had just finished registering at Marine Park in Red Bank for the upcoming early morning race, The George Sheehan Classic,  which is dedicated to his late father, a cardiologist, and who is affectionately known as the "Running Doc,"  Sheehan thought for a moment and confidently said, "Optimal - no excuses!"

To the unitiated in the running world it might take a few paragraphs to explain what that comment means but to all who had the good fortune to personally know the "Running Doc" they will know exactly what it means, and will be accompanied, no doubt, by a smile or even a chuckle as it did of the creator of the comment.

Among the many club finishers were:

Marti Rettino 39:13,  John O'Reilly 37:42, Bob Flannery  35:15, Jerry Grayce 40:48, Donna Mehler 49:35, Marilyn Ryder 47:36, Bill Aramando  32:53, Graham Wisdom  37:21, Mary Beth Glaccum 37:15, Peggy McKean 53:45, Peggy McKean 43:20; John Strang  38:28; Patrick Kappock  40:56

Thursday Helpers Needed

Please Consider Helping Out Your Club!

We need a few volunteers to help with the registration and scoring of the Thursday Evening Summer Series of races for youth and adults which starts on June 16.  Volunteers need to be at the Wall Municipal Complex by 6 PM.  If you would like to volunteer (no experience necessary) just email us to let us know you are coming  or to get more info. Please  email us at jsrc@hotmail.com

You don't need to be at every race!

Cost to Put on a Race

Good article on the cost to put on a race and where your race registration fee goes.  Not included are the time and effort of all the volunteers.  Next time you run a race thank the volunteers or send a thank you note.  And if something does not go right please understand that all those people are really trying their best and they are not getting paid for their efforts.  If results are late - don't blame the volunteers.

Of course the best way to "pay back" is to volunteer at an event and get involved. Then you can learn first hand what is needed.  The club is always looking for volunteers and even Race Directors for many of our events.  Email jsrc@hotmail.com to volunteer.

"I just wanted to thank the entire support team and sponsors for a wonderful event Saturday morning!  I have just started running in races over the past 12-18 months and this was truly one of the best appointed – starting with the 5K signs on the roads leading to the event, to the potted flowers lining the awards table, to the clean port-o-johns, to the music, etc. etc. etc. - there was nothing lacking at this event.  Though my boyfriend and I are residents of Somerset county, we will continue to look for running events sponsored by JSRC."  Mary Homer - Race paticipant
