Fall Marathon Training Program

Just Released

For anyone planning on running (or just thinking about it) any of the many Fall Marathons here is a training schedule of long runs planned starting this July. The Runs are scheduled at our regular Sunday Meeting location in Middletown starting from Bodman Park or at the Manasquan Reservoir in Howell. You can go to either location. The Reservoir location is fairly flat, easy on the feet and conducive to pacing. You can jump in on any or all of these runs even if you are not doing a marathon. If you are training for a marathon at a different date you can adjust accordingly. Starting time for the runs is 7:30 AM for 20 milers at Bodman Park, 8 AM for other distances from Bodman and 8 AM from the Manasquan Reservoir Site for all distances. Liz Ireland will coordinate the Bodman runs; Jerry Convery will coordinate the Manasquan Reservoir runs. At Manasquan Reservoir you can run 5 mile loops with the idea that you will have running partners up to 20 miles. At Bodman Park you can run long for 10, 11, 12, 15 or 17 miles staying in the "Stone Church" area and going through Hearthshorne Woods. With the "Monster Loop" you are committing to run either 19 or 22 miles. These runs are stamina, strength runs with hills and varying terrain. All these long runs are set up for Sundays. If there is an unforseen conflict, we could move a session to Saturday. Contact Jerry Convery at 732-290-1920 for more information or if you have any questions. Here is the complete schedule:

Beach Run is Back

Yes! The Beach Run is Back and what an evening for a run on the beach. Beautiful skies, a spirited field and a little warm weather made for a very interesting and challenging race. Runners started out in front of Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch for a 2 + mile run south on the beach, turned around and then traversed a hill up to the Promenade to a finish at the park. At the start Cindy Zipf of Clean Ocean Action thanked the runners for participating and focused on the groups efforts in making sure our most valued resource, the Atlantic Ocean, stays as pristine as it looked to the runners and spectators. Among those running included Long Branch Mayor Adam Schneider (finishing time of 37:12) who along with the other participants will probably be feeling the pain in their calfs for quite sometime. The Event was put on by The Jersey Shore Running Club and Clean Ocean Action. Phil Hinck was the Race Director. At the awards ceremony Phil thrilled with the success of the event jokingly promised to make the race a 10K next year and run all the way into Asbury Park on the Beach. Many of the participants could be seen asking for apps for next year's event! Check out the complete results. Some JSRC finishers included:

It was voted at the last Club Meeting to make this an annual Event. Shown are some of the members who participated at the past Trip Party at Mark Griggs house. - after they cleaned up and showered!

NYC Marathon Bus

By now many runners have received their notification of acceptance into the NYC 2000 Marathon. It is time to start planning on how to get to the start and then get back home. A most convenient way is to take advantage of the Central Jersey Road Runners Bus which leaves from Cranford, just off the Parkway, and drops runners off at the start. It then transports spectators, luggage and refreshments to the finish. You meet up in a Gym just across from the finish line with refreshments and a comfortable ride back. The cost is only $27 and is well worth it. To sign up send a check payable to CJRRC and mail to: Mark Zenobia, 54 Thomas Drive, Clark, NJ 07066. For more information call 732-381-0318. The bus is also great for spectators as they can see the start and get into Manhattan well ahead of the first finishers.

Club Receives Recognition

Local and International Awards

The Club has been recognized this past month locally here as well as internationally for its efforts in promoting running and for its commitment to the local community. On May 18 the Women's Center of Monmouth County honored the Club for its long standing support of the Women's Center's Programs against Domestic Violence. Through the Saturday in the Park Race held on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend for the past 6 Years the Event has raised over $70,000 as well as brought attention to the Center's Programs which includes a domestic violence shelter for families. The Club was honored at a Banquet and Received a Plaque presented by The Women's Center. Extending its reach throughout the world the Club was also awarded the RealRunner.Com Running Club of the Month for June 2000. RealRunner.Com is an international running web site which recognizes running clubs every month for their efforts in promoting running and their involvement in the community. The Club was the first US based Club to receive the distinction. The award was made possible by the many members who regularly volunteer their time to the activities of the Club such as volunteering at the Special Olympics. The award carries more than just prestige it also comes with a 1000 pound(about $1,500) monetary award as well as being featured on the RealRunner Web Site for the month of June. Look for the Club to be featured starting in June at RealRunner.com.

Midland Run

A bus load of Club Members traveled up to Far Hills, NJ to participate and volunteer for the Midland Run this past Sunday May 21. The Club's Trademark Orange Jackets were prominent in the mass of Runner gathered for what is dubbed, "The Woodstock of Running.". And just like Woodstock when it rains there will be mud and the runners feet and legs told the story. Besides assisting with the Kid's Races the Club also provided assistance to many cars (and one Ryder Truck) which were stuck in the mud, leading President Phil Hinck to offer yet another service for runners at future races. The Bus organized by Ira Wiss was terrific and a lot of fun. Liz Ireland did a terrific job in catering and providing hospitality at our tailgate location right on the finish line. Afterward the group continued the festivities at Carlos O'Connors in downtown Red Bank. The overall winner was Paul Mwangi of Ossining, NY in 46:12 and for the women Milka Jepchirchi in 54:52. Complete results are posted.

USATF Meeting

Mark Troxler

Dear JSRC members: As JSRC liaison for USA Track & Field-NJ I attended the quarterly meeting of USATF New Jersey. Meetings are held quarterly on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM at Tillet Hall, Room 209, Rutgers University. The latest meeting was on May 17, 2000. This was an important meeting in that new officers and at large members were elected. Anyone can attend the meetings. The web site is www.usatf.org/assoc/nj/ As a quick summary of the meeting, Madeline Bost, President call the meeting to order. Minutes from the last meeting were approved, as well as the latest financial report.

Elections were held. The following is a list of the new officers. President- Madeline Bost (uncontested), VP Andrew Boyajian (uncontested), Secretary William Pollinger (uncontested), Treasurer Joe Croghan (uncontested), At Large member Maurice Bell, Long Branch TC (14 votes/27), College Coach Roberta Anthes, Rutgers, Athlete Kimberly Keenan Kirkpatrick. Reports for the Sports Committees were given. Many upcoming races and Track Meets were discussed. The Garden State Games will be July 8, at Rutgers not July 22. The State Junior Olympics will be on June 17. The State Masters T&F meet will be on June 4 at Monmouth regional high school. Race walk clinics are held every Wednesday at 6pm at the Wall recreation center.

Again this is just an overview. A complete schedule can be found at www.ustaf.org/assoc/nj/ An officials report was given by Ed Sabin. The Big East Track & Field Championship was held this year at Rutgers and will be held again next year. Currently in NJ there are 3050 USATF members The National Junior Olympic Championships will be held at the end of June in Buffalo. The NJ chapter of USATF is one of the main organizers of the meet along with several other associations. Under new business there will be an all comers meet in June 14, the Homdel International Track & Field Meet. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 10:15pm.

So what does all of this mean to JSRC. First USATF is the National governing body for LONG DISTANCE RUNNING as well as race walking and track & field. What happens with this organization affects us all. To me this is a very difficult group to contact. At least I thought. I have been trying to get involved with them for the past 10 months. I have made numerous phone calls and emails to find out when and where they meet without any success. Once I found out about a meeting the day after. But now I am in the loop and so are you. At the meeting the officers truly did not understand why so few people attend the quarterly meetings. For the past 10 years I have lived in Oklahoma and we had the same problem. It took me 2 years to get involved with the Oklahoma Association of USATF. I then was elected VP of that association. Two of my main goals that I felt I accomplished was the public awareness of USATF in Oklahoma and the unification of LDR with Track & Field. I feel the same needs to be done in NJ. USATF-NJ is an opportunity for Road Running Clubs, Track Clubs and Race walking clubs as well as individuals to get together quarterly and discuss the problems with their sport. USATF-NJ has a new person managing the office. That person is Julie Schick. I encourage all to call her at 732-296-0006 or myself at 732-897-1757.

Mark Troxler, DO Jersey Shore Running Club National Chair, Sports Medicine, Youth Athletics, USATF

Thanks

Thanks to all the JSRC volunteers who helped make this Year's New Jersey Area Six Special Olympics held at Long Branch High School on Saturday, May 13, 2000 another success.

The pictures tell the story!
