A
nice crowd of runners participated in the second annual Cause for Paws 5K held
at Winding River Park in Toms River. It was a steamy morning with warm temperatures

Pine Beach in a time of
17:41. For the women it was a virtual tie with Karen Charles of Belmar and

The weather has played a part in this year's summer series with some threatening skies, some thunder showers and some hot nights. This past Thursday was no exception but all the races went off pretty much as scheduled and everyone appeared to have a fun time as usual. The Kid's Half Mile went off without any rain as did the mile race. In the Mile race the Matt Nelson was the first overall finisher wrestling overall first place from the girls who finished 1,2, 3 last week. For the girls it was Maura Peters who was first and fourth overall.
Just after the 3 mile race the skies opened up and a down pour of very heavy rain chased the runners for protection either in their cars or under the protection offered by several of the buildings at the Complex. But almost as if on queue the rain came to a drizzle a little bit after the scheduled 7 PM start and the runners took off and by the time the racers finished the course the rain had stopped. In the 3 mile race the first place finisher for the men was Bob Horn and for the women it was Noel Brock who was third overall.
Clarence Lurch again dominated his age group of 80+ to finish first in that group.
The series concludes next Thursday with our traditional Handicap race in the three mile race. Runners will be assigned a start time based on their fastest time of the series. The first (slower) runners will start at 6:45 PM so try to get to the complex early so you can get your start time and be ready to run at your assigned time. We will run the course in reverse - finishing on the soccer field where we usually start.
The kids half mile and mile race will start at 6:30 and 6:45 respectively as usual.

If you have been accepted (check your status here) into the NYC Marathon you need to start your training and you should also be planning on your transportation to the start. The JSRC will again be offering convenient transportation to and from the NYC Marathon for runners and spectators.
Sign Up as soon as you know you have been accepted as space will be limited. We will have at least two busses and after these fill up we will add more if we get sufficient interest. The two busses we had last year were sold out so don't delay - this is the best way to get to the start and get home safely with all your running friends at the Jersey Shore.
