Chicago Lakeshore Marathon  - Sutah Robins 4:33:33

my first time back to chicago in 32 years.

one on one.  gotta love a spectator who takes the "cheer em on" thing as serious as tony,  a hottie along the race course  who jumped in to run with me.  tony gave me the chicago lakeshore tour as we passed each noteworthy site.

did you know?  the lincoln park zoo is getting a new monkey cage.  some of the buggers were able climb free of the old confinement.  the yacht club was moved back and enlarged.  (show me the money)  "oprahs on" the lake in one of the sleekest high rises closest to the water.   forget her, john cusack's there also!   in one of the waterways salmon come each year to mate.  the local fishermen try to catch them but the fish are not biting as they are "busy".   rob lowe filmed a movie in tony's highrise.  rob brings a girl home there and  the story line goes he got  "busy" too.

tony bailed on me for a while to run with some of his friends.  then waited for me on the pier to pass as  his mission was to get me a hot dog from somewhere along the beachfront. i had mentioned  my desire for running the chicago marathon was to  get a hot dog.  the only stand we found didn't look right.  so turns out i got the hottie, no dog.

riding with boys in shuttles.  i rode shot gun in the shuttle to the airport.  a group of other runners in the back.  one commuter asked another how he did in the race.   the responder  casually says  "i won."  i flipped around in my seat.  not a kenyan.  it was chuck engle, marathon lunatic!  said the maniacs have been trying to recruit him as he's done 29 marathons.   i got his autograph on my bib.

and at long last a chicago dog.  two, actually, at gold coast hot dogs at the airport.

i am doing this marathon again next year.  hotties, celebs, and hot dogs!  then, there's that mating thing.

next week end the rock n roll marathon in san diego

Sutah Keeps Going in Utah

Six Marathons in Six Weeks - Don't Try this at Home!

 Sutah Robins 4:27

THE PLAN: knowing  i had a flight out of la guardia at 8 a.m. friday morning i planned accordingly...party til 2 a.m., leave at 4 a.m. (to miss the new york rush hour traffic), and catch flight at 8 a.m.  after partying I   sat down on the sofa and closed my eyes for just a second...we're off to see the wizard:  susan calling.  that is her theme song on my phone.  still sitting up, still in my party dress and sandals i wonder "good lord, what's susan  doing up at 4 a.m?"  she wasn't.  it was 8a.m!

i'm off to see a man about a horse:   i add a ball hat to the party outfit  and out the door i go.  first thought:  i am freaking starving.  careening caddy through dunkin donuts i brake for a coffee, coke and a dunkin mcmuffin.  sippin', scarfin' and slurpin' i barrel up the parkway.  closing time: i miss 2 more flights on standby before i realize i am not making the utah race expo to get my bib number.   "bandit"  that's me. i'm getting closer: flying completely out of the way to dallas, i catch a connecting flight to utah.   in flight "carbo loading" was a bag of pretzels!  mini pretzels!

she'll be comin' round the mountain:  at 10p.m.  albeit no traffic from salt lake city to ogden.   i am driving a break neck speed to make dinner.  somewhere over the mountain, way up high.... .  that noise over the radio is not the engine.   it's my stomach.  i reach ogden.  the streets are rolled up.  tight.

the goldilocks suite:  check in the hampton inn,  request an all night pizza number.  domino's!?   that's it???   i wearily unpack, shower and roll back the binkies and...."FRONT DESK?  I WISH TO REPORT A MURDER IN MY BED!"   they, of  course,  in total  hampton inn guest relation tones offer me another room.  another room???? !!!!idonwanna.

completely spent,  i throw everything in my bags; noting with relief that i had packed running shorts.  party dress and running shoes is way over the top, even for me.   course there is that guy that races in a tuxedo. dinner:  the so called pizza arrives while i am switching rooms.  in my haste i drop half of it on the floor.   eat the crust of the pure half, set  two alarms for 3:30 a.m, check the bed for another crime scene, and merciful god,  drop in for a few winks.

race day:  it seems like it has been race day now for 3 days.  what with virtually no sleep or regular feedings i am confused.  however,   i am able to locate race officials and my bib!  sutah loves utah!

she's a maniac! maniac:  i board the bus for a ride further up the mountain  as i mumble "gd mrning"  to my bus mate.   noting with pleasure i have remembered not only my shorts but warm leggings for the long wait til race start.

THE RACE:  goodness gracious great balls of ... !  after running a mile it begins to rain.  rain mixed with freakin' pea sized hail balls!  the rain pours!  the hail stings every inch of exposed flesh.  and me,  with a headache to boot.  hunger?  exhaustion?  elevation?  all of the above!

"go maniac!"  "go 6 in 6!"  "there goes that girl":  once i reach lower elevation and  i have managed to swallow a few dried poop- looking cliff bars i begin my last 6 mile acceleration to the welcome yells from other runners i met at the start.

   4 hours 27 minutes.   that's 6 marathons in 6 weeks:  but who's counting.     ME.

to save money drove down to delaware marathon the morning of the race.

round and round she goes ... had some difficulty locating frawley stadium.  u-turns, one ways, wrong ways and finally a car load of knowledgeable runners led me in.

round and round she goes...race start and the first mile sign says 20.  uh oh.  loops!  4 riverfront laps to the finish.  pass 4 great waterfront bars, none open before i finish.  dear race director: may i suggest a happy hour start time?

marathon maniac singlet once again attracts kudos from those in the know,  cheers from the jersey shore running club and questions from many along the course.   one curious runner sidles up next to me and asks, "what does it all mean?"  and i tell him my story.  "this is 5 marathons in 5 weeks for me."   he says "how do you afford the travel?"   i reply, "oh honey,  i gave up my oceanfront apartment weeks ago.  not one to give up an ocean view i  moved out to the bench on the boardwalk."

not one to give up on anything...my streak continues.

Good To See You Back T.

.......The first thing I thought was; I could loose a good friend....I was freaking inside but the last thing I wanted to do was to communicate this to any of her family, gathered close around her hospital bedside............

The June 2003 City was hot and gritty. Noise, dust, people everywhere and a subway accident that had managed to tie up and downtown train and street traffic for fifty blocks....Just another day in the Apple...I had taken an early train from Metuchen with the hope that I could catch a quick (yeah, right) 8th Avenue subway up town to see my friend Theresa. She was post operative and recovering from major surgery.

There was a neurology team as well as an eye surgeon. This group had performed hours of delicate procedures only yesterday. I made my way through the halls and elevators up to her room. The first thing I noticed was her skin color was perilously pale. Her cheeks were drawn and she seemed so lost and tiny in that hospital bed. A day after the operation, she was conscience and  speaking with a lot of effort. Her husband Al, was strong. He was up tempo and positive about her future and he was the only reason I didn't completely loose it at that first visit

Theresa and I had been running together for more years than we both care to admit. As coach of the Shore AC Women's LDR teams, I had known Theresa as a tough road race competitor, ever loyal ready to give it her best. And she came to the roads with a long list of high school track accomplishments that included a New Jersey State record half mile. As well as numerous Rutgers track credentials. As friends, we spent time running and with family get-togethers and watched our family's grow and the years go by like a warm summer wind.

This medical procedure was very involved and two surgeons were needed to perform a delicate procedure to restore Theresa's eyesight which had been rapidly worsening over the last year. The alternative to surgery was to possibly loose eyesight and in one eye and eventually cause pressure to part of the brain. The percentages were iffy for a complete recovery even with the surgery and the doctors, as usual, gave little in the way of guarantees. I remember the other times I visited Theresa in the hospital. These were happy times with the arrival of her kids, Dawn and Joey. Theresa and Al joking and proud and in a party mood. This time there were no jokes, no party, not even kids around, not yet anyway. I came as close to praying as I have in a long, long while. At these times you ask yourself, how can this happen to such a healthy, bright and happy person. How could this happen to my friend?

Well, I left Presbyterian Medical with a whole new set of hopes for Theresa. After what seemed like weeks (but not even a week) the doctors released Theresa, who was recovering ahead of schedule and she was sent home to her family with strict orders  to refrain from anything physical for a long period of time. On my visit the next week I was encouraged that although she was a twenty five pounds lighter, she was walking, a few minutes at a time and eating a little. I thought that we might be able walk up the block a few feet (the coach thing never ends) but it was apparent Theresa had trouble with her balance (as expected) and so I didn't even bring up the walk. Instead, we sat in the backyard and talked about vacations, kids, friends and well, yeah, running. Who was racing well, who was injured, who was having babies who was training for what and to my delight, who she was going to try to beat once she was well enough to run again. I only half believed the last part of this as my only thought at this time was to see her healthy again.

Well, not a lot of time passed and we did take finally take that little walk around the block. A few months later, against my most vehement protests, we were at a popular shore area 5k and with no small effort, Theresa finished the race in about three times her usual racing time. And although I scolded her for racing so soon, I knew that her years of running experience and knowledge of physiology (teaching physical science ) that she knew her limits (better than, maybe even the coach). So that was last winter. We met just a couple of weeks ago to run one of the Bar Anticipation 5k's. She and I ran most of this fast, flat course together and I watched in amazement (but not a lot of surprise) as Theresa's competitors fell behind her one by one, just like she'd done so many times before through out the years. And wouldn't you know that Theresa won first place, on that brisk, bright sun shiny spring day.

I felt a happiness that I still can't fully express as I thought of Theresa making it all the way back (and then some) from a convalescent condition. Frail, in that hospital bed in New York I could only hope that she would one day be healthy and once again self-sufficient. Well, happily, all those things are true today (not to mention that Theresa recently completed her work on a post graduate degree!!!). The description of "come back athlete" will never be quite the same now that I've seen this kind of courage and conviction. My friend Theresa Marciani will always be an inspiration to me as an athlete and a model of perseverance.

It's good to see you back T.

Run a Mile with the President

Here  is a picture of one of my best friends in the Army, Mike McNaughton. We were privates together in 1990-1994. He stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan Christmas 2002. President Bush came to visit the wounded in the hospital. He told Mike that when he could run a mile, that they would go on a run together. True to his word, he called Mike every month or so to see how he was doing. Well, last week they went on the run, 1 mile with the president. Not something you'll see in the news, but seeing the president taking the time to say thank you to the wounded and to give hope to one of my best friends was one of the greatest/best things I have seen in my life. It almost sounds like a corny email chain letter, but god bless him.
