FARC Women's Race

Marlboro, July 16, 2000

By Jim Robbins

A field of 136 women took to the roads of Marlboro Township on a sunny, humid morning of July 16th to compete in the 11th annual Sunday 5K For Women, organized by the Freehold Area Running Club. Point Pleasant's Barbara Moldoch, women's champion of the recent Wall Township's Firecracker Five, was the way-out-in-front leader and first to cross the finish line located on the access road of the Recreation Community Center on Wyncrest Road, at a racing time of 18:29 (18 minutes and 29 seconds). I did a 17:29 at the Reindeer Romp (in Pt. Pleasant) last December," said Moldoch when asked her best effort for a like distance.

Coming in second from the 3.1 mile course, that starts on Wyncrest Road in front of the Center and winds its way out and back through tree-lined streets, including the development of Monmouth Heights with its cheering spectators was Lisa Tofler, Los Angeles, CA, at 19:49. Tofler informed she was racing for the first time in two years due to her having a baby and that her best time ever for a 5K was 17:07. Rounding out the top three was Christine Corey of Ocean Grove at 20:05. Alicia Kelly, Spring Lake Heights, on the mend from a difficult pregnancy, set the record in 1994 for this course at 16:44.

Sherry Brosnahan, Bridgewater, was the event's racewalk champion at 29:14 and had her best 5K in England last year while competing on the world stage, with a time of 27:11. "I love this race: it's well run - well marked and the many volunteers are friendly and helpful," said Brosnahan when asked to comment. Pam Allen, Oceanport, veteran runner in the Shore area and winner of her 45-49 age group, at 21:43, had this to say about the course and weather: "It was mostly flat but there were a few rolling hills and it was hot and humid - ungodly humid."

This, and other women's races, is encouraged by the Road Runners Club of America and its financial sponsor, Avon, and in the words of racewalker Isabelle Keeley 41:24, Freehold, past president of the Shore Athletic Club: "Women's races are to foster women to come and participate, that racing exists beyond high school and college and is a sport for life to keep us physically fit."

Awards of Fuji cameras, sweatshirts and RRCA plaques were awarded to these winners and age-group leaders as well as special awards of sister-sister, mother-daughter and first-resident by co-directors Bob and Linda Hyer assisted by their 5th grade daughter, Renee, at the Center's gymnasium, as wilted racers, including Healthwalkers, were enjoying bountiful refreshments. Many random prizes were raffled due to the generosity of the Freehold business community. Jack Lucey of Howell did the computer results.

"I want to thank our sponsors and all the volunteers for giving of their time and efficient efforts ( most are members of running clubs and are familiar with assigned duties). I especially want to thank the Marlboro Police Department for excellent traffic control," said Bob Hyer.

Women's racing continues with the Jersey Shore Running Club's presentation of Saturday in the Park at Holmdel Park on Sept. 2nd at 9 a.m. to benefit the Women's Center of Monmouth County Inc.. For information call 732-542-6090 or contact the Race Director, Penny Hinck.

Club Sweeps Firecracker 5

Jim Robbins

Four hundred and fifteen road racers commenced celebrating our nation's 224th birthday, offically named Independence Day, on a drizzly, humid 4th of July morning, by competing in the 12th annual The Firecracker Five, a 5-miler, organized by Wall Township Operations and Good Sports U.S.A.

Barbara Moldoch (pictured below with two of her friends), JSRC Member of Point Pleasant, was the first woman to cross the finish line, located at Allaire Road in front of the Wall Municipal Complex, at a racing time of 30:03 (30 minutes and 3 seconds) good for 10th place overall. It was nice - nice and damp - I love the slop said Moldoch in commenting on the weather conditions, in between breaths at the finish area. In 95 (1995) I did a 29:02 at Spring Lake ( referring to the popular Spring Lake Five raced on Memorial Day weekend ), Moldoch informed when asked her best time for the same distance. Marissa Detata of Brick was third in 31:18.

Dave Demonico, also JSRC Member of South River, champion of the recent JSRC Fathers Day 5K in Wanamassa, was the overall, way-out-in-front winner, on this rectangular course that also started at the Complex and included Campbell Road, 18th Avenue and New Bedford Road at a time of 26:42. Rich Caponigro, Wanamassa, was second place finisher, a minute behind the leader, at 27:42. He was followed by Keith Ford, Louisville, Kentucky, at 27:50. Caponigro was racing in third place until the 3rd mile mark where he caught Ford and then passed him on the way to the finish.

Where the road was smooth, there seemed to be better traction, offered Demonico, in commenting on the different surfaces of the course. This was the South River resident's first time at The Firecracker Five and attributes his competing this year to the encouragement he received from fellow members of the Jersey Shore Running Club.

Finishing second for the women, 11th overall, from the course that had adequate water spots manned by cheering volunteers, and fire trucks placed at strategic areas for a needed, cool, hose-spraying, was 1998 Firecracker womens champion Lauren Rhatigan, dressed in an appropriate stars and stripes running outfit, at 30:23.

John Soucheck, Little Silver, was the first racewalker at 39:25 and Alina Zeleznova of South River in 49:41 was the womens racewalk champion at 50:18. Aah it was OK,said an unenthusiastic Soucheck referring to todays performance. His best time at this race was 38:33.

It was fine when we started, said Marilyn Ryder of Long Branch, winner of her 55-59, age group, at 46:28, but then the sun came out and it got hot, real hot, Ryder added in commenting on the weather.

Fred Rummel, long-time race director and Robert Peters, mayor of Wall Township, awarded sweatshirts and trophies to these winners and age-group leaders at the Leo Kubaitis amphitheater on the Complex grounds as the patiently waiting, wilted racers were enjoying refreshments. The event includes a fun run, leisure walk and kids races. The Elite Racing System of Clifton did the finish-line activities and computerized results. Wall Operations is the beneficiary. Im very pleased with the outcome and want to thank all the volunteers and the Wall police department for traffic control. I want to recognize the many sponsors who make this financially successful, especially Good Sports USA, said Rummel

Saturday in the Park Women's Race

Deanna MacLean

As we are all enjoying the summer, and the races and t-shirts that we accumulate, I want to remind all of the members about this event, the Saturday in the Park Women's 5K, an event for womenwomen who are experiencing fear and humiliation, as well as physical harm. I once was one of those women, afraid to come home at night, afraid to speak to anyone, an ace at wearing make-up and clothing that covered bruises. As a club, we are taking steps to end this horror, the horror that sometimes results in deathyes, I was almost killed more than once, but am lucky in that I survived. I was lucky, too, in that I did not bring life into the world to go that horror, but unfortunately, children are victims as well. And then the cycle continues, since my fiance was a product of an abusive household. Violence begets violence.

I joined the Jersey Shore Running club not realizing that there was such an event, but the more I ran for my " miles for the millenium" and got newsletters, I realized I had to help in some capacity. I am asking my fellow club members for any help, financially and physically. Its giving of a few hours of time to women and children who are forced to endure hours upon hours of sexual, physical and emotional abuseas I did. But through this small sacrifice of time, we can help them get beyond that, and realize there is life after abuse. The club has taken on this issue, and as I am speaking to people about it, so many are coming forward speaking about family members, co-workers and/or friends who have been victims. In July, I am taking a segment with CN8 for airing in August on Newsmakers. I am hoping to get coverage with the Asbury Park Press.

We are looking for sponsorship at an initial level of $150.00 from companies. And individual pledges at any denomination. I challenge everyone to make a pledge for all the millenium miles you have run so far this yearsave a child, save a woman from having to face another incident of pain. For further info on this very important event contact Penny Hinck (email: saturdayinthepark@home.com) or Deana MacLean (e-mail: miraclecat@home.com). And if anyone has anybody they feel could be contacted outside of the club for exposure, please let us know.

Thank you for your time and support.

And true to Special's nature, he shows up late boasting about his "government plate" "we're only half done," one hasher exclaims, "if you don't drink this micro-brew, may you do down in flames" "Eugene's food is gourmet" (or so I would hear) "I don't give a darn....now pass me a beer" "I'll fix this," Special Ed would say (they're talking about McDonalds to this very day) "setting a hash course is easy, I've done this before," much too simple...oh what a bore And with the "Good Doctor" he ran out of sight, whoops...he forgot to recon the course...now this is gonna bite "oh it's live and this should be fun" now look...here comes a farmer and he's got a gun" He isnt happy we are crossing his farm, he stands waiting to break a hashers arm I got swept down the Long Tom, now that isnt fair what an introduction as a new hare! "I'll try again, it can't possibly be worse" (boy was I wrong: I can still hear them curse) "You forgot the flour" (every hasher in chorus) "and where did that hash go, before we entered the forest??" Through the downtown mall...now couldn't you find> "there was no flour there; have you lost your mind Short Circuit can't help you out of this one: you messed up the course; now you better run! So off to Greece did he slip out of town... it's not that bad Ed, now wipe away that frown Leave your mark that's what's been said... just another day in the life of old Special Ed

It isn't Bali Hi, Brigadoon, Camelot or Shangri La, but it is Wanamassa, Interlaken, Loch Arbour and Allenhurst (all Monmouth County, NJ), about as close as you'll get to an ideal setting for a road race and that's just where the Jersey Shore Running Club designed its course for its annual Father's Day 5K with sign-ups and award presentations at the elementary school on Bendermere Avenue, Wanamassa (pretty native-American name - it rolls pleasantly off your tongue as it's recited).

Kate Miller, 24 (pictured below after receiving her award), of West Long Branch was first racer in for the women's division on June 17th, from the 3.1 mile course that starts and finishes at the school and meanders through the towns' tree-lined, shady, macadam streets, adjacent to stately residences with well-manicured lawns at 19:27 (19 minutes and 27 seconds [8th overall]). "I did an 18:01 at William and Mary (College in Williamsburg, Va., hosting a track meet) representing the University of Richmond," said Miller when asked her best time for a 5K distance. "A very pretty, residential area with a lot of shade and it' flat and fast, offered the women's champion when asked her thoughts on the course. Dave Demonico (pictured below receiving his trophy), 32, South River, fresh off a victory Thursday night at the JSRC's Wall Township Summer Series, where he set a course record, was this race's 6th annual overall winner, of the 151 competitors, on this sunny, cloudy, high-humidity morning at 16:18. "A lot of shade - sharp turns with dips, where you had to watch your footing, had to slow up and change gears - and the course management as a whole was just excellent," were some of the observations offered by today's overall champion when asked about the course.

Rounding out the top three for the men were Rich Caponigro 17:17, Ocean and Richie Broxmeyer 17:18, Milltown. Coming in second for the women was Erin Marie Quinn 19:33 (11th overall), Hoboken and third was Dawn Ciccone 20:39 (22nd overall), Highlands. The Top Cop winners male/female were Thomas Brennan 19:55, Plainfield and Kate Jackson 21:04, Spring Lake, respectively. Bruce Jones, of Jackson Township and Jim Gaul, Wanamassa police officer, co-directors, awarded trophies to these winners as well as age group leaders and father/son and father/daughter teams on the grounds of the school while the wilted racers were enjoying refreshments.

The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association # 57 was the beneficiary. Scoring was compiled by Liz Ireland past-president of JSRC and Hoyle Mozee, Long Branch, was the official timer. The event also included a 2-Mile Fitness Walk and Kids Races. The names of the many sponsors were printed on the race's T-shirt. " I'm very pleased with the turnout and want to thank the towns' police for traffic control and am grateful for all the volunteers who make all our races possible," said Jones.

Other area racers of the nearly ideal setting: Gerhard Dohne 19:22, Mike Tully 19:28, Spring Lake (award); Matt Miller 19:31, W. Long Branch (award winner); Jason Watt 19:35, Oakhurst (award); Charlie Weschler 19:57, Colts Neck (award); Ed Kollins 20:30, Ocean; Steve Foley 21:10, Oceanport ( race director Run Thru Deal); Mark Salaway 21:17, Brielle; Scott Lewis 21:26, Interlaken; Mary Conry 21:38, Colts Neck (award); Phil Tell 21:12, Bradley beach (award); Tim Muhoney 21:35 , Belmar; Irven Miller 21:54, W. Fall Marathon Training Program

Just Released

Check out the Complete Schedule for Both Locations

For anyone planning on running (or just thinking about it) any of the many Fall Marathons here is a training schedule of long runs planned starting this July. The Runs are scheduled at our regular Sunday Meeting location in Middletown starting from Bodman Park or at the Manasquan Reservoir in Howell. You can go to either location. The Reservoir location is fairly flat, easy on the feet and conducive to pacing. You can jump in on any or all of these runs even if you are not doing a marathon. If you are training for a marathon at a different date you can adjust accordingly. Starting time for the runs is 7:30 AM for 20 milers at Bodman Park, 8 AM for other distances from Bodman and 8 AM from the Manasquan Reservoir Site for all distances. Liz Ireland will coordinate the Bodman runs; Jerry Convery will coordinate the Manasquan Reservoir runs. At Manasquan Reservoir you can run 5 mile loops with the idea that you will have running partners up to 20 miles. At Bodman Park you can run long for 10, 11, 12, 15 or 17 miles staying in the "Stone Church" area and going through Hearthshorne Woods. With the "Monster Loop" you are committing to run either 19 or 22 miles. These runs are stamina, strength runs with hills and varying terrain. All these long runs are set up for Sundays. If there is an unforseen conflict, we could move a session to Saturday. Contact Jerry Convery at 732-290-1920 for more information or if you have any questions. Here is the complete schedule:
