Rob Jaeger

Dear fellow JSRC club members,

Although it came by surprise, I am flattered to be nominated for the honor of club president.

I'm just a recreational runner who has benefited greatly by my membership in the JSRC over the past 4 years. Upon returning to Monmouth County after a long absence I found myself in dire need of a social life. I am extremely grateful to this club and to the comradery I've found among its diverse members. Running with the club has improved my level of fitness, improved my general state of mind, and has opened my social life far beyond any expectations.

How can we improve the greatest social/athletic club in the world? There are a few minor things that come to mind. I'd like to see race mementos other than shirts - How about socks? hats or gloves for winter events? The web site and the membership renewal system can be modernized.

One major thing that I think should be under consideration is the idea of a club house. I know it's an extremely ambitious task but we have a very respected member who wants to spearhead this project. I think it would be great to have a home base of our own with a meeting area, showers, lockers, and perhaps a few treadmills.

Although I can not promise a club house, I can promise to give my 100% as president of the club to continue the great races, social events and charitable efforts of our wonderful running club.----  Rob Jaeger

Jim Buckler

I am proud to say that I have been a member of the Jersey Shore Running Club for over ten years. Over those ten plus years I have steadily increased my involvement with the club through participating in several races during each year, to becoming a volunteer, to becoming a board member, and now obtaining the privilege of running for the position of President. It was this transition from new member to active member that allowed me to benefit the most from my involvement with the Jersey Shore Running Club.

I am not now nor was I ever an accomplished runner. So as I look back over the years that I have been running as a member of JSRC, my list of accomplishments do not include finishing times or placing in my age group. Instead they include learning the value of running for my personal best, volunteering, involvement in the club, and making some friends for life. I do not think I am unique in this way, as I have met many club members who sacrifice a great deal of their time volunteering and enjoying the friendships that have been established over the years.

If elected President of the Jersey Shore Running Club, I plan on working with the newly elected board on establishing a list of agreed upon goals for 2009 and beyond. By gaining a consensus on what we want to accomplish, all board members will have a role in not only setting our goals but in accomplishing them as well. Personally, I would like to create an environment that allows more members to become “active” members. Additionally, I would like to work with the New Member Coordinator on new and creative ways of increasing our membership.

The Jersey Shore Running Club has two key events during the year. We have the Holiday Party and a “Day at the Races” picnic at Monmouth Race Track. I would advocate establishing a premier signature running event for the Jersey Shore Running Club. I would envision this event as a first class event from start to finish. This would include providing high end JSRC apparel for the participants as well as a fabulous post race party. I would hope that this event would encourage all members to participate as well as draw on new members to join.

My wife, Lorraine, who is not a runner, has become an active member of the club. My daughters Jacquelyn and Courtney and son-in-law Michael are members and have run and/or volunteered in many club events and have encouraged other friends and family members to join in the fun. Speaking as a husband, father and father-in –law, I would encourage all members to get your extended families involved. Spending quality time with your family at a race or other JSRC events will create memories that will last a lifetime. It has for me.

So I leave you with this: “The race goes not always to the swift, but to those who keep on running”  --- Jim Buckler

Eric A. MacKellar

If elected I will continue the tradition of promoting running with a charitable bent. What I mean is we serve a diverse population of runners – serious marathoners and triathletes to casual joggers and all of us want the best for our community. Each year the JSRC helps raise hundreds of thousands of dollars which go back to into various community causes in Monmouth and Ocean counties. We have a great group of runners and we will continue to support them with our group runs, training tips, newsletter, website and races. I will also continue the promotion of FUN.

I see the club continuing to support running at all levels. We have beginners and experienced runners and we each can learn from one another. I also envision the club extending our outreach to the community by helping various groups raise money, encourage volunteerism and help raise awareness of health and fitness issues. The bottom line is we need to get out there and run – I don’t care if it is on the boards, the beach, the roads, the track or the trails. I don’t care if you are fast or slow get out there and run – but never forget your community and to have fun.

I appreciate your support in the upcoming election! ---- Eric MacKellar

The Club's Saturday Group Run kicks off this coming Saturday, January 10 at beautiful Holmdel Park. We meet at the visitors center prior to 10:00 am so that the groups can get started at 10:00 am. Getting Ready for the Start of the Annual New Year's Eve twilight Run

A large crowd of about 300 runners braved the cold sub freezing temperatures and windy conditions at the Annual New Year's Eve twilight Run in Lake Como.  The runners started at the side of bar Anticipation and ran around the Lake Como with a finish at Bar A.

JSRC President Tim Mahoney shown finishing on the left was dressed in appropriate attire for the occasion as was the finisher on the right who carried what must have been her favorite refreshment along the course.

The Run was dedicated to the memory of JSRC Member Beth Patterson who was a regular participant and volunteer at the event and who passed away this past year.

The runners warmed up quickly inside Bar A with a great buffet and Happy Hour as they celebrated New Year's in Ireland. Many prizes and give aways were distributed to the participants.
