Liz Wenslauskas Goofy Challenge in Disney World half marathon first day 2:01 and full marathon the following day 4:09
Despite
near freezing temperatures in sunny Florida, Guy and Laurie Gordon turned in
stellar performances at the January 8th Disney World Half Marathon.
Guy
and Laurie, who hail from Stillwater, were given elite starting slots and didnt
disappoint. Guy ran 1:21.15 to place 20th and Laurie ran 1:34:46 to place 199th
just 5 months after giving birth to their daughter, Ashley Rose. There were
15,000 competitors in the race.
Despite
the near-freezing temperatures, Laurie's dad, Charlie Parton, was out on the
course to cheer the Gordons on while Trudy Parton kept an eye on
budding-runner, Ashley, back at the hotel.
The Gordons invite anyone interested to venture to Jersey's Northwest for the 4th Annual Beach Blast 5-K that they will direct this Saturday, January 21st. The race starts at 1 pm at Swartswood State Park and is a beach theme wrapped around a fast 5-K. Post race baked goods will be served and if you run in just a bathing suit, your entry will be reimbursed at the finish line. Proceeds go to The Bears Youth Running Program which teaches kids from around the state the beauty of the sport of running both physically and mentally. E-mail LaurieGordonRun@aol.com if you want more info or to be directed to an on-line application.
It was a stellar year for running at the Jersey Shore and the Jersey Shore Running Club. Not only did many members achieve personal accomplishments the club through its events and the events that we were actively involved in were able to raise more that $300,000 for local charitable groups such as Special Olympics, The Foodbank, Habitat for Humanity and many other worthwhile causes. We all look forward to another successful year in 2006. Our membership also grew to over 1500 members representing all levels of ability. Our group runs were again well attended and provided an opportunity for all to stay motivated year round.
This was all done with the hard work of club volunteers. All are invited to get involved with the Club in 2006. Make a New Year's Resolution to come out to a group run, volunteer at an event or attend the monthly club meeting.
A group of friends of Chuck Whelan recently visited him and presented him with a check to help with his medical bills. Chuck has a debilitating disease and was extremely grateful for the support.
Thank you Lou and the JSRC members for the generous donation you
gave me from the Trick or Trot Race. I always enjoyed running. The Sunday
mornings at Bodman Park with the club and the runs on the boardwalk were very
enjoyable.
There are few places in the United States as nice as the area surrounding
Bodman Park and a boardwalk that you can run 17miles on. When running the boards
one of my favorite things to do was go down to the shoreline and play tag with
the edge of the continent(the waves). A good interval workout in the sand.
It was good to see club members and hear that the JSRC is doing very well. I
can remember when Phill started the club as Team Running Store in the early 80s
and we were only about 15 members. Now there are over 1,500 members the largest
running club in the state of NJ.
Happy New Year,
Chuck

A huge crowd of approximately 200 runners said so long to 2005 at the Club's Annual New Year's Eve Twilight Run held in beautiful Lake Como at the Jersey Shore. The rain stopped just in time for the run and held off until everyone returned back to Bar Anticipation for a hot buffet, party, dancing and lots of prizes. Tim Mahoney led the runners with his 2006 "Birthday Suit" as pictured above.
Thanks to Phil and Penny Hinck the Race Directors who also celebrated their Wedding Anniversary as well as Pat and Reggie from Bar A and all the other volunteers who made for one spectacular New Year's Eve Celebration.
This event will certainly grow into one of the big ones at the Jersey Shore.
Among the many Club finishers were:
Graham Wisdom 38:13, Ralph Garfield 38:18(1ag), Matt Shafer 32:30(1ag), Marcia Drakiwicz 47:41(also took the plunge), Mike Bair 29:53(1ag), Leslie McKernan 44:45

A bill is being considered by the State to ban smoking in Bars and Restaurants. The Bill is co sponsored by Club Member and Assemblyman Sean Kean. If you would like to express your opinion on the Bill you can call the two Assembly Members who are controlling the vote Speaker Sires and Assemblyman Roberts at 1-609-292-7065. Your calls to this number will help put pressure on our elected officials to consider this measure. It is endorsed by the American Cancer Society and the JSRC recently sent a letter of support to the Assembly. So this is your turn to express your opinion regarding a smoke free environment in New Jersey.
