An intrepid group of 10 JSRC Members arrived in Florida to experience
the legendary "Gasparilla" run January 4th. The race features a 15k and 5k
event. All ten JSRC members opted for the 15k.
Group runs in shorts and tee shirts were a welcome relief to winter weather. Tampa weather was "spring" like. With blooming flowers and greenery, the spirit as well as the body was rejuvenated.
The race weekend features a large expo with several club members enacting their own version of a "economic stimulus program".
The race itself features separate men's and women's start lines and early morning start of 7:15am. The course is an out and back along a broad scenic boulivard bordering the bay. It also featured live music at each mile.
Several club members took special honors; Marilyn Ryder, 5th AG Award and Jane Erbe and Nancy Parnell both top 10%AG winners. Terri Perez had a personal best. Annette Dillon and Jim Persicketti both completed the full marathon that was held the following day.
The race also featured a post race party.

Here are some New Year's Resolutions from Club Members:
"Run the 2003 Honolulu Marathon" - Sutah Robins
"I would like to get through this year with the least amount of stress as possible and to smile and have fun. I am also going to expand collecting gifts and needs for the Neptune Aids Foundation. Running wise, I wold like to get back to running at Bodman and run a decent half marathon. I would like to volunteer at at least two running events. Simple resolutions, but for me they are surmountable! I want to wish everyone the happiest of New Years and that all of you will fulfill your goals and dreams." - Deb McNish
This year I aim to take a deep breath, focus, absorb, and appreciate all the reflective thoughts and comments Tim Mahoney has to offer before and after our race events, since I can never actually find him during a race to continue my enlightenment" - Chris Wilcox
"Happy New Year To All" - Randy Stein
"New Year's Running Resolution for me is to complete my first marathon. I'll be training with my sister who's done three already. She lives up in Union County and I'm in Middletown, so it will be a challenge to get together as often as I'd like. I only run about 6 miles now so I need to build my training and stay dedicated. I hope I can join the weekend runs with the club at Bodman Park. I'd love to meet new people down here in this area. I just moved here in August. Looking forward to '03." - Bernadette Gatto
"Run to keep my butt from getting bigger than my bread box." - Tom Zarra
"For 2003 I hope to learn to relax more and not to become so stressed out by things beyond my control. I have gone through many significant life changes over the past three years. Divorce, remarriage, and an extended family are all part of the picture now. My wife, also a runner, and I have four wonderful children; two from each of our previous marriages. They range from 26-15 and we will become grandparents this year as my 26 year old daughter and her husband are expecting. Running has always helped me through the rough times. In 2003 I hope to complete a half marathon in spring and the LBI 18 miler in the fall. I hoped to do LBI last year but did not get in the long runs through the summer heat. I would love to do a marathon in the near future but I can never seem to get the long training runs in that are so crucial in completing the marathon. My wife and I have very much enjoyed your races by the shore. Living in North Jersey we don't get to take advantage of the group training runs, but we love the races and do as many as possible. My wife is originally from Asbury so it is often like old home week for her. I wish all a happy healthy New Year with fast times and fresh legs." - Tom.

Beginning Saturday, January 4, we will resume our Group Run at Holmdel Park. Every Saturday through March we will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the main pavilion for a pleasant and low-key spin around the cross country trails. As with all our Club Runs all paces and abilities are welcome. The typical distance covered is five (5) miles, but some members choose to do less and a few run multiple loops around the Park. As usual, we will keep semi-accurate attendance records so that we can award the coveted (?) Golden Donut Award. It is anticipated that Jim Buckler will be back to defend his title, so expect staunch competition (although the prize might be a bit stale by now). If you want to find out more about this arbitrary honor, please stop by. Feel free to bring large jugs of hot chocolate for everyone (particularly if want to get "extra credit" points for the Golden Donut). What a better way to kick off the New Year than by committing (or being committed) to join some of your fellow JSRC members for an enjoyable weekly run. I cannot think of a more appropriate New Year's resolution! Happy New Year! Dave Zurheide
Marathon training moves up a notch this weekend with an 18 Miler this Sunday from Bodman Park. The run starts at 7 AM. Its a scenic and interesting course. There are water stops and refreshments at the finish. For those who are not yet ready for an 18 miler we also have groups doing 10 - 12 miles starting at 8 AM. Click the Marathon training Link for directions to Bodman Park. All are welcome.
Hashathon - Thanks
"I just want to say thank you to sponsoring a great race at the Hashathon. It was probably the most fun race I'd ever done (and I'd been racing for 16 years!) Also I was astounded by the killer prize I won in the raffle. Thanks again for a great race and awesome prize!!" Julia

Thanks to all the members who contributed to the Club's Annual Adopt A Family at the Holiday Hash this past Friday. Due to your generous contributions Santa was able to satisfy all of the family's Christmas Wish List. Special thanks to Brielle Cyclery and all the other contibutors for helping Santa get two brand new bikes for the children who lost their's when their home burned down. In addition to the sleigh full of gifts we also raised several hundred dollars for the Family and the House of Ruth. Thanks Again!

The Club was represented in full force at the Kleinerman 10K this past Sunday and several members excelled and garnered top spots in several categories in NYC's Central Park. The Club Teams also fared well and it appears that two of the teams have placed in the top three of their respective age groupings. Final team results are still being tabulated but Tom Hall and Jerry Convery are so confident of the win that they have already reserved tux's for the gala New York Road Runners Club banquet to be held in February.
3,797 runners today (2,166 men, 1,631 women). Team JSRC sent 18 gladiators to the arena. It appears that the masters team of Bythell, Hall and Peters took 5th place, just behind WSX...who came in 4th. So, the Masters team clinches SECOND overall for the season....how sweet it is! Congrats to everyone who ran during the year, whether you scored, supported or just plain drank beer! In the Veterans division, it was even sweeter. The Vets team of Hall, Sauls and Convery took 3rd place on the day, behind TRR and GNY. BUT, we finished the season 1 point ahead of GNY for SECOND place overall for the season. Thank you Jerry Convery!!! Two awards for the team on NYRRC award night (2/22 - Hilton NY, more details to follow).

Marathon Training for the Winter and Spring Marathon Season got underway at Bodman Park this past week despite the snow. Its not too late to jump in and get in on the fun and get ready for all the up coming marathons. All different paces are represented so you will always find someone to keep pace with from sub 3 hour marathoners to 5 plus hours. The courses are challenging to build up your stamina for any type of course and scenic and interesting and with a group the run just seems to fly by. We have plenty of water stops and post run refreshments.
