Beginning January 12, 2002, we will begin our Saturday group run at Holmdel Park. The starting time each Saturday will be 10:00 a.m., with the group meeting in the (usually) heated main pavilion at the park. Our expectation is that these group runs will continue through March 23, after which we will re-institute (upon the start of Daylight Saving Time) the popular Wednesday evening run at the same location. We expect the basic format of the Saturday runs will be similar to our experience on Wednesdays -- 5 miles total consisting of a one mile warm-up, one loop of the 5K cross country course and a one mile cool down. Some runners will complete multiple loops of the course for a longer workout. All paces are welcome. These runs will be an opportunity to warm-up for our regular Sunday group runs at Bodman Park, a final tune-up before the Freehold Area Running Club's Winter Series or as an excellent location for a challenging training run of any distance. For additional information, directions or just to let us know that you are coming, please e-mail Dave Zurheide
A good sized group of about 15 runners ran from 5 to 10 miles around the reservoir last Saturday. It's a great place for a change of pace. We'll have periodic runs from this location or any other suggested locations to provide some variety to your schedule. Send an email with your suggestions and watch this space for details. . In the mean time the Holmdel Run is always available - see above. And don't forget about the other Regular Club Runs.
The Jersey Shore Running Club again welcomed in the New Year with its Annual Trek to the Midnight Run in Central Park, NY. The spirited group led by Dawn Ciccone celebrated the New Year with a spirited run through the Park. Thanks to Dawn for coordinating and arranging another successful trip to Kick Off the New Year!
Following are statements from our two candidates for President of the Jersey Shore Running Club - Bill Koch and Adele McDonough. An official ballot will appear in the next newsletter.
I have the honor of being nominated for President of the Jersey Shore Running Club. I look forward to being able to serve in this capacity. Biographically, I retired two years ago from a 30 year career in Law Enforcement. The last eight years as Chief of Police in Ocean Township. I am 54 and reside in Ocean Township. I am a graduate of Monmouth University and the FBI National Academy and Past President of the Monmouth County Police Chiefs Association.
As a life long resident of the Jersey Shore, I have been a member of the running community in this area for the past 23 years. I am a long time Club member and volunteer at many of the Club events as well as being part of the newsletter team for the JSRC. The major strength of our club is its membership. We are a diverse group with a common love of running. We have a tremendous talent pool . We are the largest running club in New Jersey. We are a club that is primarily social as opposed to competitive. Life is too short to be too serious. Running should be an enjoyable experience shared with others. We should continue our positive relationship with charities, community groups and other running clubs.
If elected President, I would work towards these goals and towards encouraging increased membership and participation in all aspects of our many activities.
If you read this months newsletter thoroughly you may have come across my name as a candidate for President. Hopefully you recognized it, as I have been involved in a few clubs activities this past year. I'll start out by telling you a little about myself.
I am 25 years old and reside in Eatontown. I joined the JS Running Club in October 2000, after seeing their presence at the Shrewsbury Classic (my first 5K). Soon after I was a regular at the Tuesday night run and started to attend monthly meetings. I grew to love road racing and appreciated all the volunteers who helped out. At the Reindeer Romp I decided get involved on the other side of the registration table and joined the Jersey Shore Relay committee, as head of team registration, under the guidance of Bob Both. The Relay had a record, 175 teams and went on to raise over $17,000 for Special Olympics. In being a part of the committee I realized how much time and preparation go into all of our races and I am thankful to all who volunteer.
After the Relay I decided to just dive into racing. I ran just about every race at the shore between
April and October, and I enjoyed making lots of friends and recruiting new members, while
wearing JSRC gear that Penny Hinck and Liz Ireland are always pushing on me. They know I can
never refuse. I enjoy all that the club represents and I would like to have to opportunity to show
my appreciation for all of the time and effort that is put forth by its members.
I understand that it seems odd for such a new member to be running for club President, but if elected I promise to take the position seriously and I will look toward my fellow officers and "current" club members for their guidance and support. I will try to continue the great leadership of those before me, promoting the club and all it represents.
So, please, vote for me only if you feel that I am worthy to be the President of the Jersey Shore Running Club.
The Jersey Shore Running Club had an active and full calendar of events in 2001. The Club's membership expanded and is now well over 1200 members strong. These members come from all parts of the state and beyond who have an interest in running at the Jersey Shore either because they live, work or visit here. Our members have logged well over 1 million miles during the year. We are an active contributor to the community in supporting such organizations as The Women's Center of Monmouth County, Special Olympics, Clean Ocean Action, and the Food Bank. We also held two fund raisers related to the September 11th tragedy. We received a Special Award from the New Jersey Special Olympics for our efforts in raising money for the organization as well as volunteering in support of its programs. The Club's Races were equally successful through the year with new events with distances of 5K to 50K being added to its calendar.
The Club was also an active supporter of local running in volunteering its services at nearly all Jersey Shore Events. We also assisted our neighboring local running clubs (Shore AC, Freehold Area Running Club and Ocean Running Club) at their events. Our members served as Race Director's at many of the largest and most prestigious events at the Shore.
The core of the Club remains its group runs held on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with new runs being added at Holmdel Park and Allaire State Park. The runs ranged from easy 4 mile runs to longer training runs of 25 miles and more. These runs were well attended with all paces represented.

Just call the hotline at 732-542-6090 or email the club at jsrc@hotmail.com. Make a New Year's Resolution to get out to the Club Group Runs, attend a meeting or help out in any way you can!
Congratulations and Best wishes to all you JSRC 'ers. You make being a member fun and rewarding. 2002 will be the best year ever! You don't even have to be a "real" runner to have a great time at all your events. Thanks, God Bless. - Kate Weir
Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of the Navesink Challenge. I think the MYAA volunteers enjoyed their participation. It always give you a good feeling to be a part of a well organized and administered event. I couldn't help but be impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication of the JSRC volunteers. - John Campbell - MYAA
Once again, the JSRC members came through and made this Christmas a truly blessed one for many. When I delivered the club's Christmas cheer to our adopted family, John and Eric, it was so rewarding to see our donations grace their tiny, two-room apartment with holiday love. We were able to deliver a Christmas complete with presents, food for their pantry, money and even Christmas dinner! Most important however, was the gleem in their eyes that showed how nice it was to be thought of, especially by people they never even met.
Eric and John were very gracious and asked that I extend their thankfulness to all of you. Next stop was the House of Ruth, where Sunshinne and Harley are preparing their home for their next colossal gift of giving love and caring for crack babies. The club's monetary donation and baby gift baskets were a blessing and they asked that I extend their thanks and thoughts to all of you. As for Joey, our little boy from last year, he joined his mom and siblings just days before Christmas. Though it was sad for Sunshinne and Harley to see him go, as he had lived with them a year, they keep in touch with him and will carry on with their missionary work where it is needed. Please check out their website .
We all know that runners are smarter than everyone else. Who else would punish their body in a marathon, subject their body to the elements in the winter, nearly collapse due to dehydration in the heat of summer. This research provides proof that running does make you smarter - check it out.
The Leukemia Society is again sponsoring trips to some great places to include the "Rock &Roll Marathon" in San Diego and "The Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon" in Anchorage, Alaska. Informational meetings will be held locally on Monday, January 14, 6 PM at Brielle Cyclery, Union Ave in Brielle and on Thursday, January 16th, 6 PM at the Red Bank Public Library.
Come on out to our next Club Run on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday - Club Training Runs Page.
The Club again showed that it can mix in a positive way running, socializing and working toward a worthwhile cause at the Holiday Hash held on Friday, December 21. Club members were generous in spreading some Holiday Cheer to local needy families. After a friendly run, a spirited and fun party, members wrapped some of the many presents which were donated for the family that we adopted. In addition a donation will be made to the House of Ruth which assists the children of families affected by drug abuse. This event culminated a memorable year in which the Club was an active member in the community and received many accolades and awards for its efforts. Many members who don't seek glory or personal recognition should feel gratified by their efforts. Thanks for all the contributions and donations .

before you drink that Red Bull or other similar drink. Our Friends at the Ocean Running Club have announced their Annual Winter Series will start on Sunday, January 20 at Ocean County Park in Lakewood and run every Sunday through February 10. It's now a 4 Miler and its a really great course through a nice trail in the Park protected from the wind by lots of Pines. Get the details on the Race Calendar Page.
Sue Foley continued to show why she is a force to be reckoned with on
the east coast ultramarathoning circuit as she dipped under the 5-hour
mark at the Crash and Burn 50k this weekend, held at Allaire State Park.
Winning uncontested in 4:59, she took 9 minutes off her previous pr for
the 31-mile distance, shattering the course record by more than one hour.
Foley has had the kind of year most runners only dream about, racking up one pr after another and either winning or placing high in her age group in every race she's entered, from 5k to 50k, on every surface from roads to single track dirt trails. In November, less than one month after finishing as top female master at the Atlantic City marathon, in a p.r. 3:43, she chopped an incredible 10 minutes off that time, taking 2nd in her age group at North Central Trail Marathon.
At Sunday's Crash and Burn, the petite blonde displayed the quiet determination that has earned her the nickname "killer" among the locals she trains with on the boardwalk and at Allaire State Park. With steady pacing reminiscent of her effort at September's Garden State --where she was 3rd female and 12th overall -- she dissected the rolling, very technical Crash and Burn course with a casual precision shown only by veteran, experienced ultrarunners.
With so much talent and an obvious willingness to punish herself in training, it seems the sky is the limit for the 40-year-old mother of two. Observers agree that Foley, with three 50k finishes under her belt, is ready to step up to the more challenging 50 and 100-mile ultramarathon distances when the season begins again in spring. If she does, it's a sure bet that she'll finish near the top.
The Annual Crash and Burn 50 K was another memorable event. The hills and trails of Allaire State Park were a challenge for all the participants and as the name of the event implies many of the participants "crashed" on the challenging trails of Allaire State Park. But a hardy group accepted the challenge and Burned through the entire 50 Kilometer run. The overall winner was Herman Richards (on the left) of Sargentville, NJ in a time of 4:15. On the women's side it was JSRC's Sue Foley (below) in a time of 4:59. The 50K course through Allaire State Park was scenic and challenging and is probably the toughest 50K in New Jersey. All runners are invited to participate in group runs from the Park just about every Sunday (normal loops are about 7 miles with several runners doing two or more loops - you don't have to do 50K!). It's a great change of pace from the normal run and a great way to get out of the winter winds. Get the details on this and all the Club Runs at our Club Training Runs Page. All are invited to come on out. Congratulations to Gene Gatens and Chris Frey who organized the event and set up a fantastic course.

Just a note to stay in touch. First Race in Central Park, NYC on Sunday 1-20-02. Chicken Soup Loop 10K. Details to follow about sign ups, transportation, etc. If you want to get guaranteed entry into the 2003 NYCM, you must join the NYRRC by Jan.1, 2002 and then run 9 scored races during 2002. If you don't care about the NYCM, then this doesn't matter to you. To run on the JSRC race team, you must be a member of JSRC. Please sign up or renew your membership. You do not have to be a member of NYRRC, but must put down "JSRC" on your entry forms for NYRRC races to score for our team. JSRC singlets are available from Liz Ireland for $20. You do not have to buy it or wear it unless you want to. Wear whatever is comfortable for you in a race. There is a JSRC group run at Bodman Park at 8:00 am sharp on Sunday Dec.23, 2002. Good chance to meet teammates, and run from 6 miles to 15 miles. Most people run 10 miles or 12 miles, on the country roads. You can add 5 miles running through Hartshorne Park. The groups range from very fast (Tom Hall, Dave DeMonico) to steady talking pace( 10 min. miles). I will be doing a Team list for each age group soon, and let you know who is running with you. Also check this email address list above for your teammates. If you know someone who may be interested, just forward this email. They can call me at 732-290-1920. In case you have not noticed, we really want to make a respectable showing when the JSRC Race Teams invade New York!
