I
did my usual carbo loading at the blue martini!
you just have to love the 80's if you visit tampa nightclub scene.
after 6 chardonnays and a lemon drop shot i decided to call it a night.back at
the hotel i called the desk for a pizza and a 6 a.m. wake up call.
swaggering to find my cell phone i was patting myself for coming in early.
found the phone and set the alarm for 6 a.m. i beat the clock. i woke at
5a.m., putzed around the room, ate leftover pizza, watched some
television. dressed and out the door to find the start line at 6:30a.m.
while waiting for the elevator, a kindly gentleman comes around the corner and
states "my, you are getting a late start, huh?" i query,
"excuse me, what are you talking about?" and he replies,
"honey, the marathon started a half hour ago!" CAPITAL
CRIKE-EEEEE!
Being tired, i went back to my hotel room.
hopped up on the bed, clicked on the tube, reached for ...AND THEN, i
thought what are you doing? go run this mother. gogogogogogogooooo!
I raced out of the hotel and ran towards the
convention center. dark, deserted streets, and then i espy a lone
officer of the law. i pant "where's the start? he answers
"right here." and i beg "which way did they go?"
he points. i strap on my head phones and charge off in to the night. as i
ran up the hill i see two more policeman on the corner. music blasting in
my ears, i wave and scream "good morning tampa!"
I
run down the slope and across what might possibly
be the official start (chip mat) and what was definately the finish line.
i scream at the gathering group "sorry i am late. i am nothing
without a cigarette and coffee!" they yell something back. i
race ahead. following the cones i run for a mile or so noting that the mile
markers are going down. 25, 24,23... i think to myself what an odd
way to number the course, this race director won for organization last
year?hmmmmm passing a water stop, i eschew the water. music
blasting, i wave and whoop, "good morning tampa!" i
never hear their cries which was something like: turnarndudiotwrngway!
Up ahead a truck was in my path placing cones.
out of the open back end i note one of the guys yelling at me. i pull off
my head phones. he yells, "you are running the marathon finish
route!" i yell back "where was i supposed to turn?"
and he replies, "i don't know, but turn around!" JIMINY
COCOA PUFF AND ALL THAT IS HOLY THIS IS NOT MY DAY!
I
turn around, racing past the water stop i pull off
my head phones and query "where do i turn?" and they yell at my
back, "at the hyde park bridge!" at the 25 mile marker i appear
to be the first marathon finisher, the woman with the megaphone to
encourage runners in to the finish sees me pass again. i yell,
"i know! i know! i went the wrong way!" I race
toward the bridge and see RUNNERS coming back across. i jump in the pack.
"how far have you run?", i ask. "six miles", a girl
answers. works for me. i join in. i knew i was on my race pace when
i got to mile 13 in my usual time. i calmed down and began to run the race
in earnest. which means: sober up, get some water, eat a gel.
I "ran into" members of the jersey
shore running club. nice surprise! penny took my picture on mile 24.
phil hinck cheered me on at mile 25. then i saw her...mega phone woman.
i swooped by her "remember me? i'm back!" and she
announces "HEY EVERYONE, LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE WRONG WAY
RUNNER!"
ahhh tampa. the stuff memories are made of. see ya next marathon! sutah on the jersey shore.

Ocean Running Club's long running winter series at beautiful Ocean County Park has been extended to Sunday , February 22 due to the cancellation as a result of ice and the weather. It's a great series through a scenic course through the woods protected from the wintry winds - lots of awards and refreshments after the race. The series continues this Sunday through:
Sunday, Feb 22, 11AM, ORC Winter Series, Ocean County Park, Lakewood, NJ - Extended week due to weather cancellation

JSRC's (and ORC, SAC and FARC member as well) Dave DeMonico (shown on the left in JSRC Orange) has assumed the position of New Jersey State Representative to the Road Runners Club of America. Dave succeeds John MacGillivary who served the states local running clubs in this position for the past several years. Dave is a long time member of the Jersey Shore Running Club and other local running club's as well. We all wish him luck in his new position and thank John for a job well done. Dave is the Club's birthday blog moderator and you can get his birthday blogs on the link to the left. Dave is a regular at the Club's Sunday Runs where he is often found trumpeting a birthday song. So stop by sometime to the Sunday Run to wish him luck and talk to him about his new position.

Congratulations also to Tom Hall for being appointed to a Middletown Councilman's position. Tom promises to clear the roads of traffic every Sunday on the Club's Sunday Run. Tom is also a regular at the Jersey Shore Sunday Run - so if you live in Middletown stop by and complain to him about your garbage pick ups, pot holes, and whatever else bothers you - that is of course if you can stay up to him when he runs those 5:30 min/mile 20 mile training runs.
As you can see there are many reasons to stop by the Jersey Shore Sunday Run - lots of notables and periodically real celebrities who we are not allowed to disclose - you must be there.
Read a very Interesting article in the Asbury Park Press concerning Tegla Laroupe and the Jersey Shore's Dorian Meyer.

As a result of a very successful Navesink Challenge Race held this past Novenber the JSRC was able to present a check for $2300 to the local Habitat for Humanity Group. This was in addition to a donation to the Middletown Youth Athletic Association.
Habitat for Humanity of Long Branch is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an organization that seeks to eliminate substandard housing worldwide. Their goal is to build new homes so that decent and affordable housing can be within the reach of any family willing to work for its dream. Habitat builds homes with the help of at least 450 hours of "sweat equity" from the families that will live in the homes. The group will be building a home at 84 Valley Road, Navesink, NJ. For more information you can contact them at 732-728-0441 0r visit their web site at http://www.monmouth.com/~habitat
