Last year's Relay sold out and we are expecting another large turn out again this year. Applications are available at the Relay Web Site. The Relay starts in Seaside Heights and finishes at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park with a giant runners party, awards ceremony and concert. The course is just about 26 miles and is divided up into 5 legs. There are transition areas along the course with refreshments and where you can cheer on your team mates as they make their way to the finish. Teams can be made up to up to 5 runners in many categories to include: Corporate, Government, Club, School, Fire, Police and Open. So get your teams together and register soon. In addition to the Run there is also a Walk which starts in Sea Girt and finishes at the Stone Pony. The walk can be done as a team in two stages or alone doing the entire 10 mile distance.
Just in time for Valentine's Day - check out the Club's Mix and Match Page. Whether you are looking for a friend or just someone to run with there are many listings and its easy to post your own thing. Click on link above on the Navigation Bar.
Don't forget about the Club's Annual Party on Saturday, February 8th at the Barclay in Belmar.

the link on the side.
We will as usual have a Super Full Complement of Group Runs this Weekend. We'll be at Holmdel Park this Saturday at 10 AM - a great place to get out of the wind and nice fire after the run. The Super Sunday Run goes off as usual at 8 AM in Middletown. Marathon training runs are included. All paces represented. A group will also be meeting at Allaire State Park at the Hospital Road Entrance at 7:30 AM on Sunday. A group will also meet on Sunday at 8 AM at Manasquan Reservoir in Howell and do from 1 to 3 loops around the 5 mile Reservoir. A good way to stay out of the wind. Check out the Group Runs Page for more information and all our group runs.
Anyone interested in doing some cross training is invited to join Dave Zurheide after the regular Saturday Run at Holmdel Park for some Ice Skating on the Lake. Ice Skating will start about 11 AM for those who will pass up the 10 AM run.
"Oh, the weather outside is frightful, But the fire (in the main pavilion) is so delightful. And if you want lots of fun, Come and run (or walk), come and run, come and run! " Dave Zurheide

The cold weather has not stopped most club members from getting in their training runs. Group runs are a great way to stay motivated throughout the winter and to get ready for all the Spring Action. Even in the coldest weather its not really all that bad after you get moving. The club has group runs on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at many locations at the Jersey Shore. We also have lots of ad hoc runs at some very scenic and interesting spots. Visit the group run page (link above)for information and directions to all the group runs - they meet all year round in all types of weather - rain, snow or whatever comes along! We always welcome visitors and new runners. All paces are represented. If you are new introduce yourself and someone will be sure to help you out. If you have any questions on the runs - just email jsrc@hotmail.com or call the Club hotline at 732-542-6090
Wear Layers
Layer closest to the skin should be a water wicking material such as Cool Max.
Outer layer should be something to Block the wind such as a windbreaker.
Mittens work better than gloves in really cold weather
If you don't have mittens - an old pair of socks will work
Cover your head as that is where you lose most body heat.
Stay Hydrated - you will be sweating after a few miles.
Don't overdress - you will over heat
Vaseline on your face helps protect your skin.
Cold Air will not freeze your lungs - don't be scared of the cold.
Runs in the woods help protect you from the wind
On out and back courses try and run into the wind going out so you have an easy return
Run with a group to stay motivated!

An intrepid group of 10 JSRC Members arrived in Florida to experience
the legendary "Gasparilla" run January 4th. The race features a 15k and 5k
event. All ten JSRC members opted for the 15k.
Group runs in shorts and tee shirts were a welcome relief to winter weather. Tampa weather was "spring" like. With blooming flowers and greenery, the spirit as well as the body was rejuvenated.
The race weekend features a large expo with several club members enacting their own version of a "economic stimulus program".
The race itself features separate men's and women's start lines and early morning start of 7:15am. The course is an out and back along a broad scenic boulivard bordering the bay. It also featured live music at each mile.
Several club members took special honors; Marilyn Ryder, 5th AG Award and Jane Erbe and Nancy Parnell both top 10%AG winners. Terri Perez had a personal best. Annette Dillon and Jim Persicketti both completed the full marathon that was held the following day.
The race also featured a post race party.

Listen my friends and do not disturb me
While I tell you a story of a fantastic journey.
It started one day after the New Year'd begun
And transported us all to the Florida Sun.
T'was a cold wintry night, the eve of our leaving
As we gathered at Bill's to spend the evening
Our Spirits were high with anticipation
We're leaving tomorrow for a great vacation.
The room was still dark, was it 3, was it 4?
In barely and hour we were all out the door.
We sailed thru the airport without a delay
Then boarded the plane, we're all on our way!
The hotel was beautiful, and oh what a view
Remember the kids, they were all there to crew.
Our mission was simple, we'd come just to run
And along the way to stack up some fun.
And stack up the fun we surely did best
From day one to five, a total laugh fest.
The places we went and the sights that we saw
Left us much of the time in a state of such awe
From expo to restaurants, I could go on if I wanna
With a mention of honor to the Green Iguana.
Columbia was beautiful, and so was the Samba
The food it was Cuban and served with such drama.
We ran and we shopped and we drank and we ate
And we turned in quite early - who could stay up late?
The highlight to me was the Giants' Big Game
To our room with a view all the revelers came.
The food was a-plenty and the drinks did abound
The camera was flashing with Terri around.
We watched in horror as the Giants tumbled
We were worried for Joe, he was ready to crumble.
We held hands real tight and prayed they'd be saved
We even had our own little wave.
But life after football goes on, too.
So onto the next day, we've still much to do.
And do we did as we indulged our senses
With the like of the movie Rabbit Proof Fences,
And the magical theatre in which it was play
Was like nothing old Loews or Sony had made.
I could go on and on for a year and a day
Describing the week in every which way.
The fun and the friends and the room with a view
It's so hard to describe to all of you.
But to Donna and Lynn and big Joe Mirarchi
To Mark and to Bill and our photographer Terri
To Nancy and Pat and of course Mr. Hyde
And for myself I felt something special inside.
Thank you my friends for all the great fun
I'll remember the trip for a long time to come.
A greater group you'd be hard pressed to find
For each and every one is a one of a kind.

Here are some New Year's Resolutions from Club Members:
"Run the 2003 Honolulu Marathon" - Sutah Robins
"I would like to get through this year with the least amount of stress as possible and to smile and have fun. I am also going to expand collecting gifts and needs for the Neptune Aids Foundation. Running wise, I wold like to get back to running at Bodman and run a decent half marathon. I would like to volunteer at at least two running events. Simple resolutions, but for me they are surmountable! I want to wish everyone the happiest of New Years and that all of you will fulfill your goals and dreams." - Deb McNish
This year I aim to take a deep breath, focus, absorb, and appreciate all the reflective thoughts and comments Tim Mahoney has to offer before and after our race events, since I can never actually find him during a race to continue my enlightenment" - Chris Wilcox
"Happy New Year To All" - Randy Stein
"New Year's Running Resolution for me is to complete my first marathon. I'll be training with my sister who's done three already. She lives up in Union County and I'm in Middletown, so it will be a challenge to get together as often as I'd like. I only run about 6 miles now so I need to build my training and stay dedicated. I hope I can join the weekend runs with the club at Bodman Park. I'd love to meet new people down here in this area. I just moved here in August. Looking forward to '03." - Bernadette Gatto
"Run to keep my butt from getting bigger than my bread box." - Tom Zarra
"For 2003 I hope to learn to relax more and not to become so stressed out by things beyond my control. I have gone through many significant life changes over the past three years. Divorce, remarriage, and an extended family are all part of the picture now. My wife, also a runner, and I have four wonderful children; two from each of our previous marriages. They range from 26-15 and we will become grandparents this year as my 26 year old daughter and her husband are expecting. Running has always helped me through the rough times. In 2003 I hope to complete a half marathon in spring and the LBI 18 miler in the fall. I hoped to do LBI last year but did not get in the long runs through the summer heat. I would love to do a marathon in the near future but I can never seem to get the long training runs in that are so crucial in completing the marathon. My wife and I have very much enjoyed your races by the shore. Living in North Jersey we don't get to take advantage of the group training runs, but we love the races and do as many as possible. My wife is originally from Asbury so it is often like old home week for her. I wish all a happy healthy New Year with fast times and fresh legs." - Tom.
