JSRC Celebrates Party Committee - Jeananne, Mary, Jessie, Barbara, Rennee The Jersey Shore Running Club Celebrated another successful year at its annual Party, Awards Ceremony and Installation of New Officers this past Friday at the Waterview in Belmar. Emceed by Billy Koch the evening was full of fun in keeping with the traditional JSRC spirit. A new slate of Officers were installed. Heading the list as our new president is Phil Hinck. Phil a veteran runner who has been one of the most "vocal" and visible people on the running scene here at the Shore for just about forever won the Presidential Nod after a campaign which included bribes and some questionable campaign tactics. Phil came appropriately dressed for his inauguration (or is that coronation). In his acceptance speech he outlined the direction of the club for the coming year. He said he did not have a clue. His speech was interrupted numerous times by standing ovations. (What Phil did not know was that it was for the dancers behind him on the balcony overlooking the dias who continued their skit through the entire speech). Other winners (depending on how you look at it) were Bruce Jones winning re-election as vice president, Sherry Gelenius repeating as Membership coordinator, Jerry Frazee as Recording Secretary, Bob Both as Newsletter Editor, Jerry Convery as Treasurer and Jack Cheer and Chuck Whelan as Board Members at Large. The club also handed out its annual awards to include: Comeback of the Year - Kent Sabin of Little Silver who made a complete recovery from a stroke and continues his running as one of the best Masters runners in the area and other activities. Female Masters Runner - Dawn Ciccone of the Atlantic Highlands who has consistently improved her times. Was a top finisher at the Kiawah Island Marathon. Best First Marathon - Dana Ehret of Spring Lake Heights who did a 3:02 in his debut marathon in Dublin. Best Female Marathon - Katrin Stuehmeir of Fair Haven who was one of the top Shore Area finishers in the NYC Marathon. Best Performance in a Race - Barbara Moldoch of Pt Pleasant for her performance at the JSRC's Trick or Trot Race. Best Ultra Marathoner - Male - Jonathan Brodsky of Spring Lake for his performance at the JFK 50 Miler . Jonathan actually thought about doing the Philadelphia Marathon the very next day on his trip back from Washington. Best Ultra Marathoner - Female - Robin Rossow who is a veteran Ultra and is in the process of organizing the areas first Ultra Marathon this Fall. Best Men's Marathon - Peter Sabat of Fair Haven who was the top Shore finisher in the NYC Marathon. Volunteer of the Year - Al McKean of Eatontown who has helped out numerous Club and other races therby helping to promote running in our community. Best New Event Idea Award - Jerry Convery of Old Bridge for his innovative "Bayonne to Breakers" Race on April 1. "Penny" Pincher Award - Penny Hinck of Long Branch for her dedication in acting as Club Treasurer. Secretary of the Year - Pam Allen of Monmouth Beach for her outstanding work as Recording Secretary. Organizer of the Year - Carlos Morillo who was in charge of the JSRC Picnic. Best Hares - Phil Hinck of Long Branch and Mark Griggs of Wall for setting up many Hash Runs which took runners through some very interesting terrain. Most Active New Member - Andrew Nasto of Lakewood who never misses a Club Function. Participation Award - Bernie McAuley of Colonia for competing in over 100 Races in 1999. Walker of The Year - Kevin Green of Yardley, Pa. Running Family of the Year - The Cavallo's of Bayville- Bobby, Mary, Amanda and Alexandra. Team Captain Award - Chris Coghlan of Old Bridge for the Team's Second Place Finish at the USATF State X-Country Race Most Consistent Runner - Bob Bonpietro of Avon. Liz Ireland of Red Bank was recognized as outgoing President for here efforts in maintaining the Jersey Shore Running Club as not only the largest running club in New Jersey but the one which undoubtably has the most spirit and dedication to the community at large. John MacGillivary the NJ Road Runners Club of America Representative was also on hand and recognized the Jersey Shore Running Club for its efforts as the largest running club in New Jersey. He also recognized the Club for the Best New Event "The Jersey Shore Relay" to benefit Special Olympics. The food and hospitality offered at the Waterview was just fantastic. The band was lively and kept everyone dancing throughout the evening. The organizers headed up by Jessie Joseph are to be commended for a truly spectacular event and just about the best Party the Club has ever had. Afterwards a large group of members continued to Party down the street at "Jack's" and continued the celebration into the wee hours of the morning. February Hash Run! Pinebrook Park, Sunday February 20 at 6 PM The February Hash and traditionally cold, rainy, foggy and snowy (with ice) will NOT be in Hartshorne Woods this year. It will be in Pinebrook Park in Tinton Falls on Sunday February 20 starting at 6 PM . Take Parkway Exit 105 (Rt. 36 Eatontown). At the first light (100 m. from the exit), take the jughandle which crosses you over Rt. 36 putting you on Hope Road northbound. Go by the Courtyard by Marriott, and at the traffic light, take a left onto Pinebrook Road. Go about 100 m., park is on the right, just past the 7-11. If you cross the railroad tracks, you missed Pinebrook Road. Or go down Rt. 36 from Eatontown and take a right onto Hope Road (last exit before Parkway). The hash will start in the Park. ORC Winter Series Extended Due to the weather the Ocean Running Club Winter Series a long main stay on the Jersey Shore was forced to cancel two of its weekly Sunday 5 Mile Races at Ocean County Park. To make up for the lost week they have added an additional week on Sunday, February 27. All races srart at 11 AM and they also have a Youth run in conjunction with the 5 Miler. JSRC Places at USATF X-Country Championship The Jersey Shore Running Club Team came in second place at the USATF X-Country Team Championship Race at Deer Path Park in Readington, NJ this past Sunday, January 30thcoming in right behind the Raritan Valley Road Runners. Leading the team was Jason "Fire on the Track" Rogerson with a time of 39:50, followed by Mark Griggs in 45:04, Tom Mulvaney in 46:35,Carl Stainagle in 53:41, Chris Coghlan in 1:00:10 and Bob Both in 1:01:23. Laurie Corbin, daughter of Club Members Trudy and Charlie Parton, and former JSRC member before she moved to northern New Jersey was struck by an automobile this past Monday on one of her 20 mile training runs near her home in Denville. Laurie is an Olympic Trials qualifier and was training for the upcoming trials. Reportedly, Laurie was back on the roads today - but we don't have a picture to prove it - yet!. We all wish Laurie a speedy and complete recovery so that she can continue her training program for the upcoming Trials. Super Bowl Hash The Annual Super Bowl Hash will be held on January 30th starting from the White Elephant on Rt 35 in Ocean Township at 4 PM. Come on out for a Fun Run and work up an appetite for the Super Bowl. The White Elephant has a Giant Screen TV in a Theater type of setting and there will be a fre buffet along with many prizes during halftime and throughout the game. NYC Marathon Entry Anyone contemplating entering the Year 2000 New York City Marathon, there is a new procedure to enter. Information can be found at the club website. The application process is now open and the "line up" in Central Park will occur on April 2nd in Central Park. The overall winner was Lou Raffetto, a Freshman at Bently College, who completed the 5K course through the Park in 16:30. On the women's side the first place finisher was Joyce Jawaorski of Jersey City who finished in a speedy 19:09.
