Runner's Line Up for the Start of the New Year's Eve Twilight Run in Lake Como

A crowd of over 250 runners participated in this year's New Year's Eve Twilight Run to celebrate with the last run of 2006 and ring in 2007 with a great party at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como, NJ.  Fireworks went off during the run around the Lake and the runners were treated to a great post race party to help bring in the New Year.

The first finisher was Ken Vercammen in a spectacular time of 14:08.

It was also  Race Directors Phil and Penny Hinck's 9th Wedding Anniversary and the runners all helped them celebrate.

The Start of the Polar Bear 5 Mile Race on the Asbury Park Boardwalk

Another large turn out of several hundred for the Annual Share Athletic Club's Polar Bear 5 Mile Race held on the beautiful Asbury Park Boardwalk.  

Pedro Espinosa of Freehold unleashed a powerful sprint finish in the final 100 meters to outduel Dickson Mercer of Fair Haven, 26:21 to 26:24, and win the men's five-mile run in the 43rd annual Asbury Park Polar Races on the boardwalk yesterday.    Rachel Provost of Millstone, state prep school cross country champion for Peddie School, retained her women's Polar Bear five-mile crown, clocking 30:34 to beat out Dianne DiOliveira of Point Pleasant (32:10) and Lauren Rhatigan of Ship Bottom (33.04)    The Polar Bear Races, first held in 1964, were again staged by Shore Athletic Club and sponsored by Oxford Health Plans.     Top honors in the co-featured Polar Bear 10-mile race walk went to John  Soucheck of Little Silver (1:21.44) and Lisa Marie Vellucci of Staten Island (1:33.50.) Richard Stockton College senior Rich Luettchau walked the course in 1:18:33 but was 5:43 late for the start and placed second. A total of 295 athletes, aged 11 to 86, coming from seven states, took part.

Winners were presented with distinctive Polar Bear Plaques.

Congratulations to Race Director, Elliot Denman and the Shore Athletic Club for another great event.

Saturday at Holmdel Starts 

This Saturday at 10 AM

The traditional Saturday morning run at Holmdel Park gets going this Saturday, January 6th at 10 AM.  The group meets at the visitors center and runs about 5 miles through some scenic trails.  Its a great way to get out of the winter wind.  All paces and abilities are welcome. Stop by and check it out this Saturday!

Benefit for Shaun Robinson

Information

There will be a benefit for Shaun Robinson the son of Bruce and Sharon Robinson from Miles Ahead Sports on December 30th at O'Neil's in Manasquan for 3 to 6 PM. Shaun was seriously injured in a vehicle accident and is facing lots of medical bills.

Clarence Reed

Clarence has not been at the races recently but was a regular at many local Jersey Shore Events - running and race walking.  You would probably remember him with his  white hair and trademark Irish Flagged Shorts which he wore to all the races. Clarence passed away last night.

The Start of this Year's Jingle Bell Run 5K to benefit the Arthritis Foundation

A large turn out of nearly 400 runners participated in this Year's Jingle Bell Run to benefit the Arthritis Foundation at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como.  The overall winner was Jeremy Pilkington finishing on the left in a time of 17:00 and for the women it was finishing on the right   Stephanie Dixon of Madison in a time of 21:05.

Congratulations to the Arthritis Foundation and all the volunteers from the Foundation and the Jersey Shore Running Club who put on a great event.

Thanks to the sponsors, participants and all the volunteers this year's event was able to raise over $27,000 for arthritis research.

Santa Leads Runners at the Start of the Reindeer Romp 5K

The Ocean Running Club and all the participants in the Annual Reindeer Romp held in Point Pleasant Beach were greeted to some fine runnig weather.  Santa led the large field in the Kid's Races, One Mile and the 5K race.
