Our annual pilgrimage...with a field of over 1,000 runners. This one I powerwalked. I managed to get over the hills and THAT mountain. 73 year-old Jack Whitlock from Canada put everyone to shame by doing it in 57 minutes...9 miles of wind and sloping mountains. Around mile 1 there is a gentleman who is out in his wheel chair cheering us on, rain, snow or shine, always there...its important to remember to pick up a beer in the coach's mailbox at mile 8... Then after our dinner, it is back to a local bar to see the tape of participants. And we are all planning to be at the 100th.

Another New York City Marathon &
another volunteer session for Maria Vanora & myself. Despite having
bronchitis, I kept my volunteer commitment, especially with the weather making
it bearable for me to be outside but being a tad warm for a marathon. This time
we were course marshals on Central Park South by 7th Avenue, near Columbus
Circle. A course marshal makes sure all goes well for the runners & provides
assistance, if necessary.
We were stationed on the course with all the marathoners. This was quite a change from the family reunion & chip clipping volunteer duties we had over the past several years. We reported to Columbus circle before 10:30AM. Sometime around 11AM all the course marshals were placed @ their stations. Our position was a half mile from the finish line & we had a great view of all the elite runners along with the rest of the marathoners. Of course, with the bulk of the crowd passing by us between 2 & 4PM, it was quite a challenge to spot any of the JSRC runners. However, the few that I did see on Central Park South, I shouted out encouragement & each runner acknowledged with a kind gesture.
Being out on the course enables one to really see the marathon experience, outside of running a marathon (not since 2001 for me). I was reminded of all the determination, the effort, the energy, the strength, & the struggle to get to that distant finish line. Marathoners were jogging, running, stopping to stretch & walking. Some collapsed, while others felt ill but continued to run. Medical staff offered assistance to numerous runners. NYC Police offered encouragement via a megaphone. The runners had the common goal to reach the finish line. They had to run the entire distance on their own, but they were far from being alone with over 35,500 runners, 2.5 million spectators & 12,000 volunteers.
Maria & I eventually left Central Park South after 4:30PM after a very full day. I'm not sure if it was a 100% good idea for my bronchitis, but it was a fun idea for the two of us. Now we have another marathon poncho & T-shirt to add to our collection along with some photographs. Many congratulations to all the JSRC marathoners this fall! We hope you are well on your way to a full recovery.

The overall winner was Joe Pawlish (on the left) of Asbury Park in a time of 39:20. For the women it was Lauraen Rhatigan (on the right)of Brant Beach in a time of 47:23. Many of the runners made it over to the post race festivities at a local establishment outside the entrance to the park where they were treated to refreshments and a cool band. Congratulations to Mark Griggs and all the volunteers from the JSRC and the Rumson Hash House Harriers for another great race. It is sure to last at least another 25 years.
