Join the JSRC on Christmas Day for our long standing
traditional Santa's Run. Wear a Santa's Hat and bells on your shoes if you have
them. We'll do an easy 4 to 6 mile run through the streets of Red Bank and
make some stops along the way. We will have a special celebrity guest which we
can not name so don't miss out on the Event. The Run will start at 8:30 AM and
we'll meet at our usual Sunday Run Club House at Bodman Park. Directions
to the Park are available on the Group
Run Page. All are welcome to spread some cheer!

The Jersey Shore Running Club wrapped up lots of presents for a local needy family at its annual Holiday Hash to benefit its Adopt A Family Program. Prior to the wrapping many members participated in the Holiday Hash through the local streets where they were greeted by carolers and Santa along the route. Thanks to the generosity of all the participants the Club was able to wrap lots of presents and make a donation to the family as well as the House of Ruth.
The Cub's Monthly Meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 23rd at the Deal Fire House starting at about 7:15 PM. Our guest speaker will be Dave Sauls. Dave has completed 104 marathons (and still going strong) and will be sharing his training tips as well as discussing many of his experiences. As usual we will have refreshments available for a nominal charge and we'll hear about all the upcoming events.
The Club's Annual New Year's Eve Trip is full and we are only accepting entries on a stand by basis in the event anyone cancels. For those looking for an alternative New Year's Run there are many Races on New Year's to include:

For anyone looking for an alternative run on Sunday - its a great chance to try the Club's Sunday Run which starts at 8 AM. Distances are 6, 10 and 12 miles and when marathon training is in full swing longer distances up to 22 miles. Since the course is on back roads it will be a safe place to run after the storm and its protected from most of the wind by lots of trees. As always we will have our water stops and special refreshments to warm everyone up after the run. Get directions and more information at the Club Run Page.
The Sunday Run is one of the oldest continuous runs in the State with its origins starting in Red Bank at the old Running Store location and it has been the home to many notable runners including Dr George Sheehan. We always get a great turn out with all different paces represented so you will have someone to run with and the runs always seem to go faster with friends to talk to. If you are new to the run just identify yourself so we can make sure you have someone to run with and guide you on the course. There are several variations if the course (check out the maps) and lots of opportunities to either cut the run short if you are not up to it on that particular day or to extend the run to well beyond the standard 10 mile course. There are rest rooms at our "Club House" at the start and we frequently stop at the rest area in Huber Woods. Longer runs take you through Hearthshorne Woods. There are plenty of hills and varied terrain which makes for a very scenic and interesting run. As the seasons change so does the scenery and running conditions. In the winter it is a great place to run since most of the course is sheltered from the wind and the course covers trails and back roads which are infrequently traveled by cars.

A group is meeting at 6:00 PM in the
parking lot behind the Colts Neck town hall, at the end away from the police
station. You can get into the complex from either Cedar Drive or Heyer's
Mill Rds.
Be careful running on this course as there are some narrow roads with small
shoulders. A reflective vest and or a flashlight is recommended. And
always run on the left hand side of the road against traffic.
We have gone afterwards (about 7:00) to Huddy's. It's in the shopping center by
Becker Hardware (on west side of Rt 34, about 200 meters north of 537), located
behind the liquor store. Email Wayne at MarkFitWayne@aol.com
for more info or to let him know you are coming.

Runners's continued the celebration at the many local establishments throughout Manasquan and the surrounds well after the race was over. Always done on Thanksgiving...the 94th year. Yes, I am a
back-of-the packer, but if you want to get to a real experience, get to this
once in your life. It starts out Wednesday night with a pasta party. We had a
real treat this year with coach Bud Coates who writes for Runners World ( not
too hard to do as we are in their backyard). He said he knows now that he is
officially old as he is now being called to be a speaker at events. He gave some
great encouragement as to how to handle the "hill". I managed to win a
pair of socks. At least I got something and I say that a runner can never have
too many socks.
The race is legend as it gives out diamonds to the top 7
finishers. It is the oldest 9-miler in the country and during that period of
time it has never has had any change to the course. And everyone continues to
talk about that darn hill...somehow, since I am from Pennsylvania, I knew that
this hill was more than people around here think of as a hill. Sure enough, it
was up a mountain! Terminology aside, it was amazing to see all the locals
who gave an amazing amount of support to us. And with all the people talking
about this "hill" nobody mentioned the second incline ( not as
imposing as the first though). Well, we were in the beginning of the Pocono's.
For
the informed, there is a stop for runners at the Berwick High Track coach's
mailbox around mile 8. He has beer in there. I passed as I am one of the few who
do not drink. The mailbox is closed so you have to know to look for it. But our
friends told us it is right next to the camera. His family is taping the event
that he shows at a post race party Thanksgiving evening. A new participant was
told by one of the locals that in Berwick the mailmen make a special delivery on
Thanksgiving. He did not understand as he said, "But mailmen do not work on
Thanksgiving". She said, "In Berwick, they do.." and took him to
the mailbox. I thought briefly about getting a beer and running in to the finish
with it and give it to Norm. Just as well, he was not there anyway, as he was
already in at the post race gathering. So much for encouragement.
But the weather was perfect and the support by the people in town was nothing short of fantastic. We will be going back next year to an event that is, in my opinion, the best old race in the country. But if you decide to do it, remember the country folk call it a "hill" but its really a mountain.
