The Bar A "back" Half Marathon takes place this coming Saturday. See link to the left for an application - on line registration is available at JerseyRunner.com. It's a fun half starting at Donavan's at 11 AM in Sea Bright and finishing at Bar A in Belmar with a great post race party and buffet. Transportation to the start will be provided before and after the race - see the application for details. On Sunday its the Joe Kleinerman 10K in Central Park, NYC. This is the final NYRRC Championship Team Race for the Season and two JSRC teams are vying for top spots for the series. The teams need your support either to sign up and run (make sure you list JSRC as your team) or just to cheer the team on. The race starts at 9:30 AM. A large group will be going up - wear your orange JSRC gear to show support for the Team and Club. There will be a post race celebration at Carlos' East.
Marathon Training for the Winter and Spring Marathon Season got underway at Bodman Park this past week despite the snow. Its not too late to jump in and get in on the fun and get ready for all the up coming marathons. All different paces are represented so you will always find someone to keep pace with from sub 3 hour marathoners to 5 plus hours. The courses are challenging to build up your stamina for any type of course and scenic and interesting and with a group the run just seems to fly by. We have plenty of water stops and post run refreshments.
A huge crowd of runners turned out for Ocean Running Club's Reindeer
Romp in Point Pleasant starting and finishing at the Ark Restaurant.
Despite the cold windy conditions there were many stellar performances
put in. For the men it was Dave DeMonico (on the left) back in winning
form coming in first overall in a speedy 15:48. For the women it was 12
year old Brianna Jacucewicz in a time of 17 something who bested some
of the states best women runners including Alicia Kelly and Laurie Gordon. The JSRC again
helped out at the race assisting the Ocean Running Club who put on a great event. Runner's were
treated to what had to be the best post race buffet in the state.

Start getting ready for all the Spring Marathons. Marathon training is now starting at Bodman Park every Sunday with a group also meeting every Saturday in Spring Lake.. The Bodman location is ideal for the winter as most of the trails are protected from the cold winter winds. There are plenty of hills and varied terrain to prepare you for any upcoming marathon. We'll also have runs at other locations to mix things up. Watch this page and the marathon training page for updates. The group will be increasing mileage as the program progresses. Visit the Group Runs Page for directions to the park.

Dave Slovinsky blew away the 2000 plus field to easily take this Year's Turkey Trot in Manasquan. This was the twentieth anniversary of the race. Dave finished in just over 25 minutes (25:09) with the nearest competitor over 2 minutes behind. For the women (pictured below on the left) it was Heather Bury of Morgantown, West Virginia who finished in a speedy 29:20. It was a cool windy day and runners battled the stiff head winds going west toward town. The club again supported the race and did baggage check for several hundred runners.

"What an awesome marathon. I took 5th in my division with a 3:26 AND I sang the National Anthem! I am on the starting line and something possessed me to go up to the staging area and ask the race director if they had someone singing the National Anthem. They said they weren't sure and were waiting for the mayor. I offered to sing, told them my race # and went back to the start. A few minutes later I hear my # being announced to come on stage and there I was, in front of 9,000 runners and spectators singing the National Anthem. It was the best version I have ever done and the race committee thanked me over and over and I said that I was thankful as it was an honor to me. Anyway, there was news coverage and photographers etc" - Dawn Ciccone

Despite some wet and windy conditions, Long Branch's Elias DeOlivera and Rumson's Dorian Meyer both set impressive course records on the challenging Navesink 15 K course. Elias' time was 53:10 and Dorian's was 1:01:32. In the 5K it was Bronawyn O'Leary of Cliffwood Beach for the women in 20:41 and Slater Mitchell of Cliffwood Beach in 17:17 for the men. The race benefitted the Middletown Youth Athletic Association. Congratulations to Dave Zurheide in his first go at Race Director who under "challenging" conditions did a very impressive job.
I have run in probably 100 races the past twenty years, and I can't think of a more enjoyable and picturesque course than yesterday's 15k. I came back with my wife later in the day to take pictures of some of the vistas of the course. Nice event, thanks! > > > > Chris Andreach

PS - The owner of the Black "lab" who followed the runners to the finish was found. The dog's name is Hope or "Hopeless" as the owner likes to call her. Seems she lives in a very big house on Locust Point and is very well known by the Middletown Police and the local animal shelter.
Coming next Saturday is the Manasquan Turkey Trot - one of the big races at the Jersey Shore.

There'll be no full moon in the sky tonight - Saturday November 9, but today IS the birthday of a man who has mooned the Grand Canyon (no wisecracks-there were two big cracks in the photo of that, already), the Eiffel Tower and many other international sites (true-and proof exists !!!), was JSRC's 2001 President (and current Treasurer), and can occasionally be found at Bar A, El Presidente, Jerry Frazee. When he's not working at, or running, a race (or baring buttocks to history's great landmarks), Jerry likes to sit down to his recliner to continue crocheting what is currently Ocean/Monmouth County's largest turtleneck sweater (records ARE kept for such things) and also is an accomplished badmitton player, having been regionally ranked in his age group for 6 of the last 7 years. Jerry likes Old Spice, Yanni records, and his favorite movie is "Old Yeller".
A large group of club members again volunteered their services at the NYC Marathon. The club members worked at the finish line and escorted celebrity and fire and police runners to their meeting areas. We were even visited by Mayor Bloomberg (although Phil Hinck tried to get him off the runners path). Many club members participated and some great times were recorded. It was a great day for a marathon. More pictures are posted of many runners and volunteers in the photo album. Some of the Club Finishers included:

November 1st was the Birthday of one of JSRC's favorite law enforcement figures, Mr Tim Mahoney, and tomorrow, November 3rd is the Birthday of one of our most devoted lunatics, er uh, I mean Ultramarathoners, Mr Gene Gatens. Trooper Mahoney was just recently competing on yet another marathon, this past week, in Ireland. A week after last year's New York Marathon, Time was still grinning ear-to-ear, as he ran down the Belmar boardwalk, as he was and should have been , proud of his acheivment - that's what the sport is all about !!! Other than devising intricate law enforcement plans to prevent me from getting to a Wall Summer Series race, Summer of 2001 (his plans didn't work), Tim also is well-known for his specialty Lenten Hot Cross Buns and his research into snail mating behavior. His favorite cartoon was "Catch That Pigeon".
Ultra-nut Gatens has run 50 kilometer, 50 mile and 100 mile races !!! That's some sreious time on one's feet. Knowing Gene has assured me that the times in my career when I trained with broken toes was quite normal, as I saw him finish up about 20-24 miles at Bodman with a broken toe DUCT-taped to the other !!! With that said, and all those miles accounted for, you realize this is one disciplined and tough runner. When he's not putting his body through hell, Gene likes to read poetry of Shelly and Keats to animals at the local ASPCA shelter - it helps to calm them and assist in the healing of mange. Gene likes french fries with hot fudge on them. Happy Birthdays, Tim and Gene !!!!
