Check out this article which indicates that Runners should not drink too much water during long runs. Apparently it can be extremely dangerous - especially for slower runners.

Joanne's Philadelphia Marathon

I am not new to the field of running, but I am new to the field of marathon. Last year I trained for my first marathon with Jerry Frazee as my coach. I learned many things, not just about the endurance of training, but about the kind of person I am and can be. I spent months learning proper nutrition, doing hill work, weight training and of course doing those long runs. During the those long runs I developed a relationshipwith myself that I never knew existed. As Jerry can well tell you, I learned how to properly vent my emotions from the stresses in my life and put things in perspective. For those of you who don't know me very well, I have (4) children who range from age 21 to age 7. So my life is hectic enough without adding the training for a marathon. I also made lots of wonderful memories with each run I did. It was also probably when I met

most of you, Jerry always introduced me to everyone when we ran and because we did so many long runs, Ieventually learned all your names. Which brings me to my next love of running, especially marathons - runners are so inspiring when you endure such long distances. During my second marathon, this year in Philadelphia, I struggled and I felt every cheer and every inspiring word from other runners right down to my soul. See, my first marathon, also Philadelphia, I ran a personal best of 3 hours, 57 minutes, 33 seconds. And like every runner I set my sights on breaking that record for this year. But as Jerry had told me, every marathon has it's own story. This year I trained with Donna Chevilot and we trained at a quicker pace. I still did the hill work and the weight training and the long runs but my life as a mom became more complicated. If not for the support of my husband, Don, I probably would have never made it to the start line of this marathon. He encouraged me every step of the way and he picked up an awful lot of slack on my part to cover the kids schedules. And I want him to know how much I love him for all he has done for me. You see, our 14 year old daughter, Sheila, started High School and she joined the swim team, which means swim practice every day, which can eat up running/training time. Sheila also dances one night a week and has a tremendous amount of homework, which I still do with her. She is very dedicated to her studies and sport, so as a mom I am there to support her, maybe she has learned through my dedication to the training for a marathon that she has the same drive. Our son, Scott, 21, departed for the ARMY yesterday, November 19, 2001, the day after the Philadelphia marathon. My shirt for the marathon wished our troops GODS' blessing and let others know that my son was leaving for the Army the next day. In the time I had to prepare for my sons' sending off I had emotions run through me that I never knew I had. My heart hit peaks and valleys right up to the moment he left. I am very fortunate to have very rich, close relationships with my children. Our youngest (7), Jackie is also very busy with soccer, dance, swim and religion classes. So you can all picture in your heads the amount of driving Don and I do for all these activities. So this year a week before the Philadelphia Marathon I got sick and by Wednesday before the marathon my doctor finally had an appointment for which she put me on 1,000 mg of a very strong anti-biotic to rid my body of an infection. The Saturday night before the marathon I fought a bad migraine til about 1:30am. But I made it to the start line and I promised myself I would finish this marathon, whatever it was going to take. Now remember I was planning to beat my last years' time. But as Tim Mahoney put it, running your best marathon is leaving everything on the course. Tim, how true that is - at the start, I decided if the PR wasn't going to be there, I was going to leave everything on the course. I started the marathon fine, running well. I hit mile 13 at 1:51 and was on my way to reaching my goal. Then at mile 21 my body began to swell, I believe because the doctor had me on so much medication and my left foot couldn't get any flatter, so I had to walk for 3 miles. At this point Penny Hinck gave me some inspiring words and a much needed packet of GU and I ran the rest of the way in with a renewed spirit. I crossed the finish line at 4:27:33. I reached my destination. Why do I tell my story, because I think anyone who gets on the start line for a marathon, endures the distance and agony, and crossed the finish line - is a winner in my book. And I congratulate all the Winners this year because I think I have learned the true meaning of winning - it encompasses a lot of personal satisfaction.

Wishing you all the best,

Joanne O'Shea

P.S. Thanks to my parents also, who have never missed any of my races ever. You are the best PARENTS ever !!!
