I
t was a truly glorious day for the First Annual runAPalooza
of events at the Jersey Shore all ending up in Asbury Park. Over 3500
participants in the three events of the Asbury Park Half Marathon, Jersey Shore
Relay and runAPlooza Walk. Giant party inside and outside of Convention Hall
with bands, food and drink. The weather could not have been better
for the participants and all the volunteers who made for a truly memorable day.
About 600 Runners started out in front of the Asbury Park Convention Hall and made their way south through Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach and Avon. In Avon the runners had the choice of turning back for a three loop course or continuing south into Belmar, Spring Lake and Sea Girt before returning back to the finish. About 60% of the runners opted for the course into Sea Girt knowing risking the bridge opening between Belmar and Avon. A few runners were unfortunate to have the bridge open on their return back to Asbury Park but they appeared to take it in stride and were still ecstatic about the ocean front course on such a beautiful day at the Jersey Shore.
The Men's Winner was Richard Angelillo of Philadelphia in a time of 1:19:03 followed by Graham Merfield of Titusville in 1:20:23 and Eric Schrading of Galloway in 1:20:32. For the women it was Eissa Christian Shively of New York City in a time of 1:31:32 followed by Robin Campbell of South Amboy in 1:36:07.
Among the many JSRC Members finishing were: Greg Kimmet 1:57:38

Despite a torrential downpour and cold windy conditions a record turn out for the Annual Sgt Pat's 5K race held in Long Branch on Saturday, April11th. Since the course for the Asbury Park Half Marathon has been posted on the web site a few days ago we have had several comments relative to the three loop course. Based on those comments we will be giving runners the option of doing a Certified One Loop out and back course which will have the same start and finish but instead of turning in Avon it will continue south into Belmar, Spring Lake and then turn around in Sea Girt. This course will also be certified however there will be no assurance that the bridge from Avon to Belmar will not open and cause a short few minute delay and absolutely no adjustment will be made in finish times. We will have water stops and course marshal's but all the miles may not be marked.
While we can not guarantee that the bridge won't open - the chances of it happening are not that high at this time of the year - but it is a risk that the participants need to assess. There are also two steps up to the Belmar boardwalk and two steps down that runners should be aware of.
Since both courses will be USATF Certified they can be used to qualify for the NYC Marathon and participants in both courses will be scored together with awards irrespective of the course.
We will be sending an email to all registered runners in the Half Marathon and we will have information at the registration and number pick up on Friday evening before the race at Convention Hall and day of starting at 7 AM at Convention Hall..
