It was a bright sunny day
along the Jersey Shore for the 9th Annual Jersey Shore Relay. The winds
were certainly a factor coming directly from the North into the faces of the
runners as they made their way from Seaside Heights to the finish in Asbury
Park, The first pace team was The Rutgers Road Runners, captained by Eddie
Jimenez of New Brunswick. They traversed the 27 mile course in a time of
2:40:47. They were followed closely by the College of New Jersey Alumni
who competed in the School Division and finished in 2:43:57. The Open
Women's Team was Runner's High which completed the course in 2:52:27. The first
Iron Finisher - completing the entire course on his own was Christopher Bannitt
of South Orange who completed the course in 3:37:12. After the Relay
runners were treated to a huge party at the Stone Pony. The place was jammed
with runners who were entertained by Hunter Hayes.
Chris and Bernadette Wilcox were recognized as the top fund raiser for the event. Photo above on the right with one of the checks - Chris personally matched his sponsors donations for a total contribution of over $25,000.
A great race with another great post race party. This time in Lake Como (formerly South Belmar). The race starts and finishes at Bar Anticipation and is an ideal tune up for the Big Spring Lake 5.

the skies were bright blue. the air we breathed crisp and clean as we rounded sandy hook with vista of new york city and sightings of an occassional yachtsman or boater with their crafts launched for the first time this season; and cow bell boy clanging and clanging and clanging. the sun warm on our faces and bodies. affordingwith ocean breezes wafting. the waves crashing and splashing sparkling mists that twinkled and sparkled in all that brilliant sunlight.
just reeeeeeeeal special for me to be running through the finish line area headed south as the marathon winner headed north to break the tape. kind of cool to watch him lift his arms and break the tape.
hey look, there's todd byers, the barefoot runner who made me do it six miles of the frederick marathon last year. "hey! how ar ya's?" to the www.marathonmaniacs.com at the start and whoo hooing the black and yellow clad maniacs along the 6 miles of the out and around the buffet table in deal.
i relished being on my surf and turf and hearing my name yelled by friends and the jersey shore running clubbers and clubettes.
"theres no place like home. there's no place like home." i exclaimed with glee at the well attended finish line.
and later... after a celebratory bar-b-que in point pleasant. click clicked the heels at mix til 2 am.
YES! THE ADVIL WORKED.

You may have read in the press or many running magazines that Nike will be introducing a brand new running shoe late this year which takes advantage of revolutionary nano-technolgy. Basically the shoe has millions of very tiny springs embedded in its heel and forefoot.. These tiny springs made out of space age materials originally developed by NASA for use by astronauts on planets with gravity greater than the earth provide a positive return of energy and in preliminary tests have shown a 20 to 30% increase in overall performance. The shoes will most likely be banned from competitive events such as the Olympics but for the recreational runner it will allow slower runners to keep up with their faster friends. Before they release it to the general public they are going to be performing unprecedented testing to determine the effect the shoes have on runners as well as their safety and any health risks.
The Jersey Shore Running Club has been selected as the exclusive tester of this revolutionary shoe. If you would like to participate in this test, just write an email to us at jsrc@hotmail.com. In the email provide your shoe size, how many miles a week you run, and your 5K pace. This offer is limited to JSRC Members in good standing who have their dues paid. All participants will be required to sign a waiver, promise not to use the shoes in any race where prize money is offered, have periodic medical exams and maintain a detailed running log.
JSRC members, Elaine Hartung and John MacGillivray are conducting several training programs this spring to help runners of various levels get ready for spring running and racing. The programs range from the true beginner looking to run their first 5K, such as the JSRC Pre-Father’s Day Run on June 11 to more advanced programs helping runners train for 5 mile races such as The Spring Lake Five, George Sheehan Classic and Belmar Five. To view the entire listing of programs, please visit their web site www.geocities.com/Jmacrunning. You can contact Coach Elaine and Coach John at JMacRunning@yahoo.com.
Now that Daylight Savings time is in effect the Club's Wednesday Night Group Runs in Holmdel Park will be starting up. The runs start at 6 PM and meet at the main reception center. All are welcome.

hey all! i drove down to sea isle city yesterday morning to run the ocean drive marathon. parked my car at the finish line and took the trolley to the start in cape may.
speaking of starts... the trolley driver announced that we could stay warm on board or start early. START EARLY??? i was all starved up to have a big pancake breakfast at uncle billy's pancake house, but start early???!...YES, get me out of this trolley and up the windy rain soaked road.
about 15 of us lined up at 8:15 ish. (official race start 9). ed, the race director gives a few instructions about turns and writes down our bib numbers.
we are running in the rain moments later. i can't believe it! an early start. all this space. all this wind. all this time.
three guys and myself settle into a 9 minute pace, alternately passing each other or lagging back. on mile 13 we are single file a few blocks from one another.
at mile 16 i heard a truck slowly gaining on me. the flatbed passes me and i note the time clock in the bed. sure enough here is the lead male runner jamming by. reeling in the early birds.
here's the thing... once the lead male runners go by, i now look like the lead female. as i grab gatorade at each water station the volunteers eagerly announce to me that i am lead woman. mile 17. mile 18. mile 19. mile 20. mile 21. mile 22. mile 23. mile 24. at mile 25.!!! i am wondering "where is the lead woman!!!!!" i am also freaking out. am i supposed to break the finish line tape or stop running and wait for her. i ask one of the male runners as he zips past where the devil is the lead woman and he replies "blocks back."
at mile 25 and a half we are all pretty much still single file. i hear footsteps approaching. i turn to see with relief that it is a woman. oh thank god. and she yells incredulous "did you start early?" (well duh, i would have been pretty hard to miss in that pink short set) "yep!, go! go! go!" i scream at her.
i also screamed "run!" to the second woman as they crossed the finish line one, two and me three! yes, howdy. that was fun.
debbie's time on the clock 3:16:13.
heidi's time on the finish clock 3:16:17.
my time at the time 3:19 something.
my official time 4:04:44.
who says you can not bring back a base in two weeks and kinda, almost, sort of win a marathon? didn't get a trophy, but i got a story. AND a filet mignon at mcloone's rum runner.
