The Club's Sgt Pat's 5K is all set
for Saturday, April 10, 5K,
along the Promenade and Boardwalk in Long Branch, NJ
hi kids!
i blew off the more marathon last weekend in central park because brunch sounded
better sunday morning than a drive up to run 5 loops in the park. boring.
in hindsight, i regretted blowing off my 2004 goal of a marathon a month for
crablegs and mimosas. so i scrambled to find one for this past
weekend.drove down the night prior and grabbed a room in wildwood. in the
morning i drove to the finish, shuttled to the start. while waiting for
the shuttle to fill i some guy talked me into joining the 50 states club. then
want to do the continents.
the
start... wow, uncle bills pancake house! right on the start line. hot
coffee, eggs, bacon and PANCAKES! i love cake.
i grabbed a paper from the host hotel and shivered over to uncle bill's.
standing at the door was the manager... telling runners to move along unless
they were coming in to eat. big sign on the door: "bathrooms
for patrons only" jesus, welcome to the jersey shore, huh,
uncle bill? pushed my boobage past the patrol and hopped up on a counter
stool. spread out the paper, ordered my PANCAKES ( i love cake) and
became privy to an hour of staff complaints about runners. i almost said
something when i heard a waitress say "they'll be gone by 9."
instead, i took the attitude to change one mind at a time and left a
$20 tip and a smile. we certainly know now why that is the race start.
the run...
windy. windy. did
i mention it was WINDY?
instead of my
usual song "smokin" by boston, the song for this race was
definately "blowin in the wind" by bob dylan. i
don't have a clue what the m.p.h. was but i did not apply blush when i went out
dancing later. loved
running over the bridges, just because i liked the volunteers pushing us towards
the middle so we wouldn't blow over the railings to the frigid waters below.
long ass straight run through
the tightly packed summer homes. i mean, you could literally share
a cup of coffee with your neighbor by leaning out your kitchen
window. did i say coffee, i meant kiss. anyone spending the
summer that close to one another has just got to enjoy intimacy. the
finish...pet peeve: a 25 year old man racing me through the chute.
especially when i encouraged him twice over the last few miles. arrggghh.
alas, this too shall blow over.
sutah on the jersey shore.

The
Jersey Shore Running Club was among the honorees at the Epiphany House Annual
Recognition Dinner, held March 12, at the Deal Golf & Country Club.
The JSRC joined the "Circle of Friends", a group of individuals and
organizations who contribute to the mission of Epiphany House by contributing
large cash gifts. The JSRC's contribution represented proceeds from
our Saturday in the Park Women's 5K, held each Labor Day weekend at Holmdel
Park. Epiphany House, of Asbury Park and Long Branch, is committed to promoting
sobriety and self sufficiency for homeless, recovering chemically dependent
women with children. Penny and Philip Hinck attended the dinner and accepted the
award on behalf of the JSRC
Brianna Jackucewicz of Farmingdale, a regular at Jersey Shore Races, broke a long standing National Indoor High School 5K record when she ran a 16:43:02 at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships at the 168th St Armory in New York City. Brianna set the High School Record as a seventh grader. The previous record was 16:52:46 set in 1983. Congratulations to JSRC Member and 2002 JSRC Female Runner of the Year Brianna Jackucewicz..
The 2004 Spring Lake 5 Race has reached its limit of 9000 entrants and has been closed out. All applications received after March 9 will be notified via email or postcard. All rejected applications will be added to the mailing list to receive a 2005 application.
Some entries are still being processed and have not been included on the list - so check back if your name is not included and you sent in your application before March 9.
Just a few more weeks to get in on pre-registration rates for the Jersey Shore Relay set for April 17. Information packets will be sent to all teams on April 1st so we would like to have your entry by March 28th. Already we have a great field with many of last year's teams returning and several new teams coming in. Its a really fun event so get your team together and register - you can mail in registration or register on line. You don't need to identify all of your team members until the day of the race and you can do the race with less than 5 runners. It all benefits Special Olympics. It features a great post race party at the Stone Pony. Get all the details on the Relay Web Site.
The Race is limited to 200 teams so get your entry in - we have over 100 teams already entered and applications are coming in every day.
The Jersey Shore Running Club again participated in the Annual St Patrick's Day Parade in Belmar. A large group of runners did a pre parade run from Bar Anticipation, enjoyed a hearty breakfast and then marched with our decorated float in the Parade down Main Street in our Green Shirts. It was a fantastic day for a run and a parade with several hundred thousand people lining the streets. Thanks to Clarence Lurch for bringing his 1942 Jeep and pulling our float in the parade.
