10th Anniversary Sgt. Pat's 5K held
April 7th
Nearly 500 dedicated racers competed/participated in the 10th Anniversary Sgt.
Pat’s 5K, organized by the Jersey Shore Running Club (JSRC), on a windy, cold
Easter Saturday morning, April 7, and Stefan Berndt from Dresden, Germany,
visiting friends and relatives, was the first to cross the finish line, located
just outside Seven Presidents Park at the town’s historic oceanfront, at a
racing time of 16:02 (16 minutes and 2 seconds). He was followed by Dan Newman
of
Englishtown at 16:53 and third place went to Freehold’s Pedro Espinosa at
17:07.

Terra Sarnacki of Long Branch was the first woman in
from the out-and-back 3.1 mile course which starts on the promenade and
proceeds south to designated streets and returns to the finish at 19:30 (9th
place overall). Freehold’s Gabby Barrett at 20:44 (19th overall) was the
women’s runner-up and third place went to Cara Natoli
of Belmar 22:03 (28th overall).

The
event honors the memory of Long Branch police officer Sgt. King and according
to Footnotes the newsletter of the JSRC: “On November 20, 1997. Sgt. Patrick
King was killed while on duty in a town that he had lived in most of his
life. Sgt. King was on his dinner break at the Ming Ying restaurant
in the West End section of
Most all racing events have a bib or runners' number that participants attach
to the front of their shirt to identify them as they cross the finish line.
Sgt. Pat's 5K did also with the very appropriate added inscription: "To Be
Loved Is To Live Forever."
The
total number of participants is over 800 when the Kids’ Races and Fitness Walk
are considered which is also part of the event.
The top male Patrolman’s Benevolent Association leaders: Michael Monahan 20:14,

Top three PBA winners for getting the most participants went to Long Branch
Local 10 with 102 officers, Monmouth County Prosecutors Office with 41 officers
and Denville Local Local 142 with 15 officers.
The Windmill restaurant parking lot on Ocean Avenue, served as the registration
area and also here was Red Bank’s Liz Ireland, past president of the
Jersey Shore Running Club, all dressed in Easter-bunny splendor, selling
runners’ ware and gear.
Pat Joyce, emcee, assisted by Penny Hinck, presented awards
of sweatshirts, coffee mugs and tote bags to the aforementioned winners and
age-group and special-category leaders on the grounds of Strollo
Lighthouse on

Amy Robinson, Bob Ferguson Art Wisliceny, and Eddie Kirschenbaum. I want to recognize the race-day volunteers
who contributed their time and effort to making the race successful, especially
my wife Penny who really does all the work. The event has been growing every
year due to the help of our sponsors and we hope to continue doing it for such
great causes," said director Phil Hinck.
