10th Anniversary Sgt. Pat's 5K held April 7th

Nearly 500 dedicated racers competed/participated in the 10th Anniversary Sgt. Pat’s 5K, organized by the Jersey Shore Running Club (JSRC), on a windy, cold Easter Saturday morning, April 7, and Stefan Berndt from Dresden, Germany, visiting friends and relatives, was the first to cross the finish line, located just outside Seven Presidents Park at the town’s historic oceanfront, at a racing time of 16:02 (16 minutes and 2 seconds). He was followed by Dan Newman of
Englishtown at 16:53 and third place went to Freehold’s Pedro Espinosa at 17:07.

Terra Sarnacki of Long Branch was the first woman in from the out-and-back 3.1 mile course which starts on the promenade and proceeds south to designated streets and returns to the finish at 19:30 (9th place overall).  Freehold’s Gabby Barrett at 20:44 (19th overall) was the women’s runner-up and third place went to Cara Natoli of Belmar 22:03 (28th overall).

The event honors the memory of Long Branch police officer Sgt. King and according to Footnotes the newsletter of the JSRC: “On November 20, 1997. Sgt. Patrick King was killed while on duty in a town that he had lived in most of his life.  Sgt. King was on his dinner break at the Ming Ying restaurant in the West End section of Long Branch. While waiting at the counter after ordering his dinner, a lone gunman walked into the restaurant and fired two bullets into the back of Sgt. King’s head.  Sgt. King never had a chance to use the knowledge and expertise that he had learned in all his years of training to protect the public. This race is done in his memory,”

Most all racing events have a bib or runners' number that participants attach to the front of their shirt to identify them as they cross the finish line. Sgt. Pat's 5K did also with the very appropriate added inscription: "To Be Loved Is To Live Forever."

The total number of participants is over 800 when the Kids’ Races and Fitness Walk are considered which is also part of the event.

The top male Patrolman’s Benevolent Association leaders: Michael Monahan 20:14, Long Branch;  James Powers 21:56, Manasquan, Timothy Mullin 22:46, Jackson;  Frank Cavalieri Jr 25:02, Manasquan;  and Luis Martinez, 25:52, Tinton Falls. The Windmill restaurant parking lot on Ocean Avenue, served as the registration area and also here was Red Bank’s Liz Ireland, past president of the Jersey Shore Running Club, all dressed in Easter-bunny splendor, selling runners’ ware and gear.

Raffle prizes were offered due to the generosity of the local business community.

"I want to thank the race committee members: Maureen King, Tim McLoone, Pat Joyce, Scott Beaver, Guy Beaver, Jack Carroll, Amy Robinson, Bob Ferguson Art Wisliceny, and Eddie Kirschenbaum. I want to recognize the race-day volunteers who contributed their time and effort to making the race successful, especially my wife Penny who really does all the work.
